In situ preparation of weakly flocculated aqueous anatase suspensions by a hydrothermal technique.

Weakly flocculated aqueous anatase suspensions were prepared in situ by hydrothermally treating amorphous titania particles peptized with different amounts of tetraethylammonium hydroxide (TENOH). The simultaneous formation of hydrous TiO2 polyanions in the presence of OH- and tetraethylammonium cations are two essential conditions for the peptization process to occur. The absence of either of these conditions will cause reprecipitation. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed that the morphology of the particles formed at low TENOH concentrations consisted of well-dispersed anatase crystals, changing to asterisk-like structured particles with increasing concentrations of TENOH. Because of the extremely high absolute zeta potential (over -70 mV in all the samples) and ionic strength values, nontouching particle networks may be formed in situ in the mother solution in all samples, as predicted by DLVO theory. A trend to coagulation was observed in the suspensions with increasing concentrations of TENOH due to a more pronounced secondary minimum in the particle pair potential curves. Assuming the particles remained in the secondary minimum throughout the hydrothermal treatment may lead to the formation of the asterisk-like hard agglomerates. This may arise from the condensation of the -OH-rich TiO2 particles or from the deposition of material in the interparticle gap during the particle growth process. The green packing density of slip-cast bodies from a suspension containing 20 wt% solids was around 46%.

[An investigation of current situation of corneal donors action in Chongqing].

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the current situation of corneal donors and possible way to improve the corneal donation program in the city of Chongqing. METHODS: (1) The 1,400 residents of Chongqing were randomly surveyed to understand their ideas and attitudes towards corneal donation and to evaluate the correlation between their knowledge and their participation in the program in May - December, 2001. (2) The sociology data of 1,278 registered donors in the Chongqing Eye Bank were analyzed from March 1999 to December 2001.(3) The social-medical data of 37 eye donors were analyzed from March 1999 to December 2001. RESULTS: (1) Results of the random survey: the response rate was 79.14% (1,108/1,400), 1,072 (76.57%) questionnaire met the criteria for further analysis.47.20% of 1,072 persons would like to be eye donors, 62.69% supported eye donation, 32.55% would only donate their cornea, but 90.49% did not register to be a donor at present. Of those surveyed, about 2/3 were not familiar with the Chongqing Eye Bank, most did not know how to become an eye donor, and 75.28% supported local legislation to regulate donation. (2) Data of 1,278 registered eye donors: 550 were males and 728 were females, 61.89% were 30 years old or younger, most were students, teachers, medical staff or white-collared workers in general, and more than half had a university level education. (3) Data of 37 eye donors: 25 were males and 12 were females, age range was 20 - 88 years old, the main causes of death were malignant tumors and cardio-cerebral vessel disorders, 59% had nine or less years of education while only 11% had a university level education, and nine were also cadaver donors. The clinical utilization rate of eyes was 73%. CONCLUSIONS: (1) There are a significant number of people who are willing to be eye donors. Education level and age do not affect their decision to become donors. (2) Only a small percentage of the mass are registered eye donors. (3) Legislation regarding eye donation should be enacted as soon as possible. (4) Corneal donations could be higher than those at present.

[Clinical observation on xiehuo yangyin powder in treating 30 initial stage of toxic and diffuse goiter patients].

OBJECTIVE: To observe the therapeutic effect of Xiehuo Yangyin powder (XHYY) in treating the initial stage of toxic and diffuse goiter (Graves' disease). METHODS: Sixty patients were randomly divided into two groups, the treated group (n = 30) was treated with XHYY and methimazole, while the control group (n = 30) was treated with methimazole alone. The TCM syndrome score and thyroxin level in the two groups were compared and analyzed before, and 2 weeks, 12 weeks after treatment. RESULTS: The syndrome score and thyroxin level in the treated group 2 weeks, 4 weeks, 12 weeks after treatment were reduced in comparing with before treatment, with the improvement better than those in the control group in the corresponding stages (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The Chinese herbal medicine XHYY plus methimazole, in treating Graves' disease, could rapidly and effectively improve the patients' clinical symptoms and lower the thyroxin level, reduce the daily taken of methimazole.

[Molecular cloning and sequencing of Dendrolimus punctatus Wenshanensis cytoplasmic polyhedrosis virus (DpwCPV) NS5 protein gene].

DpwCPV were purified from infected Dendrolimus punctatus Wenshanensis larvae by density gradient centrifugation. The genomic dsRNA segments were subsequently extracted directly from the purified polyhedra by SDS treatmen, phenol/chloroform extraction and ethanol precipitation. Defferent segments of genomic dsRNA were separated by low melting point agarose electrophoresis, and S9 dsRNA was purified after being excised from the gel. S9 RNA was denaturalized in high temperature. The primers was designed on the basis of the RNA sequence of S9 in BmCPV-1 (H strain). After RT-PCR, the amplified cDNA was cloned into the pMD18-T Vector. The NS5 protein gene of DpwCPV is found to be 977 nucleotides in length with one open reading frame in one strand. It can code a predicted protein of 320 residues (35560).
