Targeted disruption of Tgif, the mouse ortholog of a human holoprosencephaly gene, does not result in holoprosencephaly in mice.

5'-TG-3'-interacting factor or transforming growth factor beta (TGF-beta)-induced factor (TGIF) belongs to a family of evolutionarily conserved proteins that are characterized by an atypical three-amino-acid loop extension homeodomain. In vitro studies have implicated TGIF as a transcriptional repressor and corepressor in retinoid and TGF-beta signaling pathways that regulate several important biological processes. Heterozygous nonsense and missense mutations of the human TGIF gene have been associated with holoprosencephaly, the most common congenital malformation of the forebrain. In mice, Tgif mRNA is expressed ubiquitously in the ventricular neuroepithelium at embryonic day 10.5 (E10.5) but displays a medial to lateral gradient in the developing cerebral cortex at E12.5. The expression quickly declines by E14.5. The spatiotemporal expression profile of Tgif is consistent with its involvement in midline forebrain development. To better understand the function of Tgif in forebrain patterning and proliferation in vivo, we generated mice lacking Tgif by targeted deletion of exons 2 and 3, which encode 98% of the amino acids. Tgif(-)(/)(-) mice had no detectable Tgif protein by Western blotting. Surprisingly, however, these mice were viable and fertile. In addition, there were no discernible derangements in any of the major organ systems, including the forebrain. Overall our results point to a possible functional redundancy of Tgif, potentially provided by the closely related Tgif2.

[Magnetic resonance imaging diagnosis of cervical lymph node metastasis from lingual squamous cell carcinoma].

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE: The identification of cervical lymph node metastasis is very important for the treatment and prognosis prediction of lingual squamous cell carcinoma. Simple palpation is unsatisfactory for the accurate diagnosis of cervical lymph node metastasis. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been increasingly used to evaluate cervical lymph node status. This study was to explore MRI features of cervical lymph nodes metastasis from lingual squamous cell carcinoma, and to investigate the role of MRI in diagnosing this kind of metastasis. METHODS: The MR images of 448 nodal levels in 92 patients with lingual squamous cell carcinoma were analyzed, and compared with their pathologic diagnoses. RESULTS: Of the 488 nodal levels, 166 (37.1%) were proved pathologically as metastases, level II was the most commonly involved. False-positive and false-negative rates of MRI diagnoses were higher in levels I, and II than in levels III, IV, and V. There is no statistical difference in the incidence of cervical lymph nodes metastases of different nodal levels between squamous cell carcinoma of corpus linguae and that of radix linguae. Obvious central nodal necrosis was seen in 76 nodal levels at MR images, which were proved pathologically as metastatic nodes. Extracapsular nodal invasions in 34 nodal levels had irregular contour, and infiltration of adjacent fat tissues around lymph nodes, among which carotid artery walls were encased in 2 cases. With the diagnostic criteria of metastasis as the minimal nodal diameter of >/= 8 mm or central nodal necrosis, the diagnostic sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of MRI were 79.5%, 90.4%, and 86.4%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The incidence of cervical lymph nodes metastasis from lingual squamous cell carcinoma is highest in level II. MRI diagnostic criteria of cervical lymph nodes metastasis are nodal size, central nodal necrosis, and irregular contour of lymph nodes. MRI may diagnose lymph node metastasis in levels III-V with high accuracy, While its diagnosis accuracy on levels I-II is affected by the sites, which weakens its clinical value.

[Magnetic resonance imaging manifestations of radiation injury in brain stem and cervical spinal cord of nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients after radiotherapy].

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE: It is very important to diagnose the radiation injury in brain stem and cervical spinal cord of patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) after radiotherapy. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) manifestations of radiation encephalopathy have been widely reported, while those of radiation injury in brain stem and cervical spinal cord have been seldom reported. This study was to analyze the MRI characteristics of radiation injury in brain stem and cervical spinal cord of patients with NPC after radiotherapy. METHODS: MRI was performed in 60 NPC patients 6 months to 5 years after radiotherapy. The imaging sequences included T(1)-weighted image (T(1)WI), T2-weighted image (T(2)WI), fluid attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR). All patients received T(1)WI contrast-enhanced scanning. RESULTS: Of the 60 patients, 6 had lesions in cervical spinal cord, 54 had lesions in brain stem. Of the 54 cases of radiation injury in brain stem, most lesions located in pons (20 cases), basis pons and medulla oblongata (26 cases), others located in mesencephalon (3 cases), medulla oblongata (5 cases). All lesions showed hypo- or iso-intense signal on T(1)WI, and hyper-intense signal on T(2)WI. After contrast-enhanced scanning, 11 cases (18.3%) had no enhancement; 49 (81.7%) markedly enhanced with 21 cases (42.9%) of homogenous patchy enhancement, and 28 cases (57.1%) of hetergenerous ringed and patchy enhancement. CONCLUSION: MRI shows clearly the radiation injury in brain stem and cervical spinal cord of NPC patients after radiotherapy.

[Proton spectroscopy findings of meningioma].

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the characteristics of 1HMRSI and its diagnostic value on meningioma. METHODS: The findings of conventional MRI and of 1HMRSI from 11 cases of clinically proven meningiomas and from 12 normal volunteers were comparatively analyzed. The imaging sequences included T1-weighted imaging and T2-weighted imaging; additionally T1-weighted imaging with injection of the contrast agent of Gd-DTPA was performed in all meningioma cases. Two-dimensional phase encoding of proton magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging (2D 1HMRSI) were obtained in all cases. RESULTS: On conventional pre-contrast MRI, the signals in 8 meningioma cases showed medium or faintly low intensities and in 3 cases showed mixed intensities on T1WI. On T2WI, the signals in 7 cases showed medium or faintly high intensities and in 4 cases showed mixed intensities. After injection of Gd-DTPA, the solid portion of tumors exhibited obvious enhancement in all meningioma cases. "Dural trail sign" was revealed in 7 cases. Peri-tumor edema was evident in 11 meningioma cases. Compared with control group, 1HMRSI of all meningiomas revealed different spectral peaks, including absent acetylaspartate (NAA), prominent choline (Cho), and reduced phosphocreatine (Pcr). The ratios of Cho/Pcr obviously increased. The peak of lactate (Lac) was visualized in 2 meningioma cases. CONCLUSION: Most cases of meningioma can be diagnosed with conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). 1HMRSI can yield more informative findings about meningioma via the observed metabolic materials changes in tumor cells. So conventional MRI is the most important technology for diagnosing meningioma and 1HMRS combined with MRI can improve the diagnostic accuracy. 1HMRSI can be an important supplemental means in the diagnosis of meningiomas.

[An experimental study on the mini pig model of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome].

A mini pig model for study of human obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) was established by altitude hypoxia. Eight mini pigs were randomly assigned to 3 groups, named A, B, and C. They were placed in a double-roomed altitude chamber. As control, Groups A lived in Room 2 and there was an altitude of sea level in it. Groups B and C were in Room 1 and the pressure in it was 53.9 KPa with an oxygen concentration of 10.0%-11.2%. All of these mini pigs were in their rooms for 6 hours per day. Pigs in Groups B were in the room for 12 consecutive days and sacrificed on the 13th day. Pigs in Groups A and C were executed on the 23rd day. The pharyngeal CT scanning and the defermination of respiratory pressure in pharynx oralis and saturation of arterial blood oxygen were conducted in all exprimental mini pigs before they were put in chamber and before they were put to death. The pharyngeal tissues of the executed pigs were pathologically examined. CT scanning revealed there was significant (P < 0.05) increase in mini pigs' posterior pharyngeal wall (8.8 +/- 1.1 vs 6.5 +/- 0.6) and lateral pharyngeal wall (8.1 +/- 0.2 vs 6.3 +/- 0.6) on the 13th day as compared with that before they were put in chamber, and there was also significant (P < 0.05) increase (9.2 +/- 1.2 vs 6.3 +/- 0.7; 8.9 +/- 0.7 vs 6.4 +/- 0.5) on the 23rd day. There was significant (P < 0.05) reduction in diameter from left to right at the hyoid bone level (7.6 +/- 1.4 vs 9.7 +/- 1.4) and in the anteroposterior diameter at the soft palace level (3.8+/-1.1 vs 6.5 +/- 1.3) on the 13th day as compared with that before the mini pigs were put in chamber, and there was also sinificant (P < 0.05) reduction (6.4 +/- 1.6 vs 9.3 +/- 1.5; 4.3 +/- 0.9 vs 5.9 +/- 0.8) on the 23rd day. There was significant reduction (P < 0.05) in anteroposterior diameter on the posterior area of hyoid bone (3.7 +/- 0.9 vs 6.4 +/- 0.6) on the 23rd day. A significant change (P < 0.05) was observed in respiratory pressure of pharynx oralis on the 23rd day (0.0755 Mv) when compared with that before the first day (0.0658 Mv) in chamber and no significant change was seen on the 13th day. The saturation of blood oxygen decreased from 96.3% to 87.0% on the 13th day (P < 0.05) and further descended to 88.5% on the 23rd day (P < 0.05), compared with that before the first day in chamber. Pathological examination showed. In Group A, the mucosa of pharynx is covered by nonkeratinized-stratified squamous epithelium, and the layer of submucosa is thin; the muscular layer has clear striations and less fat cells among muscular fibers. In Group B, the pharyngeal epithelium is cornified and proliferated. Edema and proliferation of connective tissue occur in submucosa, and the muscular layer is thick with unclear striations; local infiltration of fat cells can be observed among muscular fibers. The pathological changes were more serious in Group C than in Group B. The results suggest that the method of intermittent altitude hypoxia could make the pharyngeal tissue of mini pig remodel and change its muscular biomechanical properties into those similar to the performance of OSAS in human. Living in altitude hypoxia for 22 days, the mini pigs became ill with OSAS, thus the expected animal model has been established in this study and could be used in further researches on OSAS in patients.

[Magnetic resonance perfusion weighted imaging manifestation of late radiation-induced encephalopathy at temporal lobe].

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE: The imaging appearances of radiation-induced encephalopathy (REP) of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) patients were widely reported. As a new technique, magnetic resonance perfusion weighted imaging (MR PWI) is gradually applied to clinical study of REP. This study was designed to observe the characteristics of REP of NPC patients on MR PWI, and investigate its diagnostic value. METHODS: The MRI and MR PWI records of 26 volunteers and 19 NPC patients with 37 lesions of MRI-diagnosed temporal lobe REP were retrospectively analyzed. The MRI was performed 30 months to 9 years after radiation therapy for NPC. The imaging sequences included T1-weighted imaging (T1WI), T2-weighted imaging (T2WI), MR PWI, and Gd-DTPA-contrasted T1WI. RESULTS: Unilateral temporal lobe was involved in 1 case of REP, and bilateral temporal lobes in 18 cases of REP. MR PWI revealed that in edema areas of REP, relative cerebral blood volume (rCBV) and relative cerebral blood flood (rCBF) were decreased, mean transit time (MTT), time to peak (TTP), and time of arrival (TO) were delayed simultaneously; in demolished blood-brain barrier areas of REP, rCBV and rCBF were normal, but MTT, TTP, and TO were delayed; no blood perfusion was observed in myelinopathy areas of REP. CONCLUSION: MR PWI can clearly reveal brain blood perfusion changes in various lesions of REP, and indicate that obvious malfunction of brain blood perfusion is occurred in REP.

[Effect of changji' an oral liquid on activated signal alterative intensity in algesthesia domain in patients with diarrhea type irritable bowel syndrome due to gan-pi disharmony].

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effect of Changji' an (CJA) oral liquid on the activated signal alterative intensity (ASAI) in intracranial algesthesia domain in patients with diarrhea type irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) due to Gan-Pi disharmony. METHODS: Twenty-four patients were randomly divided into 2 groups, 14 in the treated group and 10 in the control group, they were administrated with CJA and placebo respectively. The sensory threshold and score in the two groups recorded by rectal inflation test were compared and analyzed. The change of ASAI in intracranial algesthesia domain was analyzed by functional magnetic resonance imagine (fM-RI) during rectum being inflated with 30 ml, 60 ml, 90 ml and 120 ml of gas respectively. RESULTS: The initial sensory thresholds in the two groups were insignificantly different, but significant difference did show between the two groups in urgent defecation threshold and pain threshold after treatment (P < 0.05). Comparison in visual simulative scores between the two groups after treatment at rectal inflated for 30 ml showed no significant difference, but it showed significant difference when the inflation was over 30 ml (P < 0.05). In the treated group, the ASAI in insula cortex when rectal inflation being 90 ml or 120 ml and that in thalamus when rectal inflation being 120 ml were significantly decreased (P < 0.05). But in the control group, it changed insignificantly after treatment. CONCLUSION: The treatment of CJA on Gan-Pi disharmony caused diarrhea type IBS might be effected by regulating the ASAI in intracranial insula cortex and thalamus.

[Report on the investigation of lower extremity osteonecrosis with magnetic resonance imaging in recovered severe acute respiratory syndrome in Guangzhou].

OBJECTIVE: To report the occurrence of lower extremity avascular abnormalities in 124 cases of recovered severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) health care workers of four hospitals in Guangzhou and preliminary investigate the correlation with the treatment of steroid. METHODS: 124 health care workers with recovered SARS from four hospitals in Guangzhou were examined with MR imaging of the lower extremity including bilateral hips and knees. In 124 health care workers, 38 cases have not treated with steroid, while 86 cases have treated with varied dosage. The imaging protocol was consisted of screening and full examination. Coronal T1-weighted imaging and short tau inversion recovery sequence were defined as the screening examination. The full examination was defined as images from the screening examination plus three additional imaging sequences: transverse and coronal T2-weighted imaging and short tau inversion recovery sequence. RESULTS: In 86 health care workers, 5 cases were found positive in the lower extremity. Osteonecrosis was found in 3 cases. One was involved in bilateral femoral head, and another was unilateral femoral head, and the remaining one was bilateral femoral heads and unilateral femoral condyle and tibial condyle. Bilateral femoral and tibial marrow edema were found in one case. Femoral infarction with significant calcification occurred in one health care worker. Logistic regression analysis indicated that the presence of avascular abnormalities was related with maximum daily dosage. CONCLUSION: Osteonecrosis definitely exists in the minority of health care workers with recovered SARS in Guangzhou, who had treated with steroid. The maximum daily dosage of steroid may significantly influence on the occurrence of avascular abnormalities.

Understanding arsenic carcinogenicity by the use of animal models.

Although numerous epidemiological studies have indicated that human arsenic exposure is associated with increased incidences of bladder, liver, skin, and lung cancers, limited attempts have been made to understand mechanisms of carcinogenicity using animal models. Dimethylarsinic acid (DMA), an organic arsenic compound, is a major metabolite of ingested inorganic arsenics in mammals. Recent in vitro studies have proven DMA to be a potent clastogenic agent, capable of inducing DNA damage including double strand breaks and cross-link formation. In our attempts to clarify DMA carcinogenicity, we have recently shown carcinogenic effects of DMA and its related metabolites using various experimental protocols in rats and mice: (1) a multi-organ promotion bioassay in rats; (2) a two-stage promotion bioassay by DMA of rat urinary bladder and liver carcinogenesis; (3) a 2-year carcinogenicity test of DMA in rats; (4) studies on the effects of DMA on lung carcinogenesis in rats; (5) promotion of skin carcinogenesis by DMA in keratin (K6)/ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) transgenic mice; (6) carcinogenicity of DMA in p53(+/-) knockout and Mmh/8-OXOG-DNA glycolase (OGG1) mutant mice; (7) promoting effects of DMA and related organic arsenicals in rat liver; (8) promoting effects of DMA and related organic arsenicals in a rat multi-organ carcinogenesis test; and (9) 2-year carcinogenicity tests of monomethylarsonic acid (MMA) and trimethylarsine oxide (TMAO) in rats. The results revealed that the adverse effects of arsenic occurred either by promoting and initiating carcinogenesis. These data, as covered in the present review, suggest that several mechanisms may be involved in arsenic carcinogenesis.

Galanin-like peptide mRNA alterations in arcuate nucleus and neural lobe of streptozotocin-diabetic and obese zucker rats. Further evidence for leptin-dependent and independent regulation.

Galanin-like peptide (GALP) is a 60-amino-acid peptide with structural similarities to galanin and a high affinity for galanin receptors. GALP is expressed by a discrete population of neurons in the arcuate nucleus (ARC) and median eminence of the hypothalamus of several species, including the rat. GALP neurons express leptin receptors and GALP mRNA levels are decreased slightly in fasted rats and stimulated significantly by acute leptin treatment in combination with fasting. In studies to further explore the leptin dependence of GALP expression, we examined GALP mRNA levels in the hypothalamus of obese Zucker and streptozotocin-induced diabetic (STZ-DM) rats. In leptin receptor-deficient obese Zucker rats, with 75% higher body weight than lean littermates, GALP mRNA levels in the ARC were decreased by 75%, while neuropeptide Y (NPY) mRNA levels were increased 7-fold (n = 5, p < 0.001), consistent with earlier reports. In hypoleptinemic diabetic rats with 4.5-fold higher blood glucose and 15% lower body weight than controls, GALP mRNA levels in the ARC were decreased by 90%, while NPY mRNA levels were increased 9-fold (n = 5, p < 0.001). GALP is also expressed by pituicytes in the neural lobe of the rat pituitary gland and GALP expression is increased by osmotic stimulation such as dehydration and salt loading. Thus, in STZ-DM rats that are in a hyperosmotic state with elevated plasma vasopressin levels, GALP mRNA levels were increased by approximately 20-fold in the neural lobe relative to control (n = 4, p < 0.001). The current findings are consistent with a strong tonic influence of leptin receptor signalling on hypothalamic GALP expression under normal conditions, and possible abnormalities in GALP neuronal signalling and their putative targets, thyrotropin-releasing hormone and gonadotropin hormone-releasing hormone neurons, under pathophysiological conditions such as diabetes and obesity. Our data in STZ-DM rats also clearly demonstrate that GALP gene expression is differentially regulated in neurons and pituicytes.

Novel 3-oxa lipoxin A4 analogues with enhanced chemical and metabolic stability have anti-inflammatory activity in vivo.

Lipoxin A(4) (LXA(4)) is a structurally and functionally distinct natural product called an eicosanoid, which displays immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory activity but is rapidly metabolized to inactive catabolites in vivo. A previously described analogue of LXA(4), methyl (5R,6R,7E,9E,11Z,13E,15S)-16-(4-fluorophenoxy)-5,6,15-trihydroxy-7,9,11,13-hexadecatetraenoate (2, ATLa), was shown to have a poor pharmacokinetic profile after both oral and intravenous administration, as well as sensitivity to acid and light. The chemical stability of the corresponding E,E,E-trien-11-yne analogue, 3, was improved over 2 without loss of efficacy in the mouse air pouch model of inflammation. Careful analysis of the plasma samples from the pharmacokinetic assays for both 2 and 3 identified a previously undetected metabolite, which is consistent with metabolism by beta-oxidation. The formation of the oxidative metabolites was eliminated with the corresponding 3-oxatetraene, 4, and the 3-oxatrien-11-yne, 5, analogues of 2. Evaluation of 3-oxa analogues 4 and 5 in calcium ionophore-induced acute skin inflammation model demonstrated similar topical potency and efficacy compared to 2. The 3-oxatrien-11-yne analogue, 5, is equipotent to 2 in an animal model of inflammation but has enhanced metabolic and chemical stability and a greatly improved pharmacokinetic profile.

Revised rat multi-organ carcinogenesis bioassay for whole-body detection of chemopreventive agents: modifying potential of S-methylcysteine.

The DMBDD rat multi-organ carcinogenesis model based on two-stage carcinogenesis theory was revised to make more suitable assay system for detecting chemopreventive effects of chemical substances by increasing the doses of two carcinogens, 1,2-dimethylhydrazine dihydrochloride (DMH) and N-butyl-N-(4-hydroxybutyl)nitrosamine (BBN). The revised bioassay resulted in increasing preneoplastic or neoplastic lesions in the colon, urinary bladder and liver. S-Methylcysteine (SMC), a water-soluble organosulfur compound, was used as a test chemical in the new initiation regimen. Though SMC did not express clear-cut inhibitory effects in tumor levels, it showed modifying effects on the development of lung hyperplastic and colon preneoplastic lesions. In conclusion, the present model featuring high yields of preneoplastic and neoplastic lesions with low mortality in a short period (30 weeks), might be suitable for testing the efficacy of possible chemopreventive chemicals at the whole-body level.

New FOCI pulses with reduced radiofrequency power requirements.

PURPOSE: To propose new frequency offset corrected inversion (FOCI) pulses with significantly reduced radiofrequency (RF) power deposition for spin echo imaging by incorporating the variable-rate selective excitation (VERSE) schemes into the pulse design. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two schemes are proposed to design the new FOCI pulses with dramatically reduced peak RF power requirements. In scheme A, the time-dilation function is derived from a predefined adiabaticity factor modulation function. In scheme B, the time-dilation function is predefined, while the adiabaticity factor is conserved. RESULTS: The new FOCI pulses are shown to be able to operate at reduced specific absorption rate (SAR), specifically at the same peak RF power as that of a five- or seven-lobe sinc inversion pulse of the same duration. Using the new FOCI pulse, significant gain in sensitivity was observed in in vivo spin-echo echo-planar imaging, which was attributed to the improved refocusing slice profile. CONCLUSION: The new FOCI pulses can replace the 180 degrees five- or seven-lobe sinc pulses in spin-echo imaging with the same peak RF power requirement and significantly improved slice profile.

Single-shot two-echo technique for simultaneous measurement of GABA and creatine in the human brain in vivo.

A single-shot, two-echo method for the simultaneous detection of multiple-quantum (MQ)-filtered gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and creatine (Cr) was developed and demonstrated in the human brain in vivo at 3 Tesla. The simultaneously measured Cr singlet served as a navigator for the spectral phase of GABA and any frequency shift during measurements due to drift in the static magnetic field (B(0)) or subject movement, as well as an internal concentration reference. In addition, the use of a double-band frequency-selective MQ filter for C(3) and C(4) methylene protons of GABA provided a very robust measurement of GABA, with excellent suppression of overlapping metabolites such as Cr and glutathione (GSH) in each single scan. Contamination from overlapping macromolecules was also demonstrated to be negligible with this method. The GABA-to-Cr ratio was 0.09 +/- 0.03 (mean +/- SD, N = 17) and the estimated concentration of GABA in the frontoparietal region of the human brain in vivo was 0.66 +/- 0.19 micromol/g (mean +/- SD, N = 17) with the internal reference method, and 0.69 +/- 0.18 micromol/g (mean +/- SD, N = 17) with the external reference method. The observed pattern of GABA doublet was consistent among all subjects, with a frequency separation of approximately 13 Hz.

A new strategy for in vivo spectral editing. Application to GABA editing using selective homonuclear polarization transfer spectroscopy.

A novel single-shot in vivo spectral editing method is proposed in which the signal to be detected, is regenerated anew from the thermal equilibrium magnetization of a source to which it is J-coupled. The thermal equilibrium magnetization of the signal to be detected together with those of overlapping signals are suppressed by single-shot gradient dephasing prior to the signal regeneration process. Application of this new strategy to in vivo GABA editing using selective homonuclear polarization transfer allows complete suppression of overlapping creatine and glutathione while detecting the GABA-4 methylene resonance at 3.02 ppm with an editing yield similar to that of conventional editing methods. The NAA methyl group at 2.02 ppm was simultaneously detected and can be used as an internal navigator echo for correcting the zero order phase and frequency shifts and as an internal reference for concentration. This new method has been demonstrated for robust in vivo GABA editing in the rat brain and for study of GABA synthesis after acute vigabatrin administration.

Measurement and automatic correction of high-order B0 inhomogeneity in the rat brain at 11.7 Tesla.

In vivo B(0) inhomogeneity in the rat brain at 11.7 Tesla was measured and decomposed up to the fourth-order spherical harmonic terms using an automatic slice shimming routine derived from the FLATNESS method. In vivo shimming of horizontal slices showed that significant improvement in the T(2)*-weighted echo-planar imaging was achieved after correction of all first-, second- and third-order in-slice shims. For localized proton spectroscopy, reproducible, high quality data were obtained after correcting all first- and second-order shims. The measured high-order in vivo B(0) inhomogeneity in terms of spherical harmonic terms should provide a useful guide for designing shims to meet in vivo requirements.

[Relationship of occupational injuries with social and economic factors].

OBJECTIVE: To explore the relationship of occupational injuries with social and economic factors in chemical industry during 2000.01 - 2001.12. METHOD: 1:2 paired case-control study, univariable logistic regression analysis, principal component analysis, and multiple logistic regression analysis were used in this study. RESULTS: Univariable analysis showed that occupational injuries had significant relationship with age, sex, education, employment pattern, technology, workplace, work changing, wage, family income, enterprise scale, enterprise proprietorship, projective device, operation rules, and training rules of work safety. The extracted four principal components (PC(1), PC(2), PC(3) and PC(4), ranked by contribution) gave good expressions to the initial 11 variables. The cumulative proportion of the four principal components reached 77.36%. PC(1) was the indicative factor of occupational injuries, which represented 46.69% information of initial variables. PC(2) was the kinetic factor of occupational injuries. PC(3) was the stable factor of occupational injuries. PC(4) was the sex factor of occupational injuries. The results of multiple conditional logistic regression analysis showed that occupational injuries had statistically significant relationship with PC(1) and PC(2). Among the initial variables, sex, employment pattern, income, scale of enterprise, and property of enterprise were more prominent. CONCLUSION: Occupational injuries are related with multiple social and economic factors, which often interact on each other. The prevention and control of occupational injuries should require a comprehensive approach, including training and education of work safety, improving workers' consciousness of self-protection, and enhancing proprietors' consciousness of work safety.
