Chemical functionalization of magnetic carbon-encapsulated nanoparticles based on acid oxidation.

Carbon-encapsulated nickel nanoparticles were used as the representative magnetic carbon-encapsulated nanoparticles for chemical functionalization. After oxidation with the mixed acid of H2SO4/HNO3 under a moderate ultrasonic bath, carboxylic acid groups (-COOH) were effectively generated on the fullerene-like carbon shells, which in turn were utilized to covalently link octadecylamine through an amide reaction. The whole chemical process is well characterized by many methods such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, thermogravimetry-differential scanning calorimetry, transmission electron microscopy, and so on, and the self-consistent experimental results were obtained. The results suggested that the magnetic nanoparticles could be well protected, while their magnetic properties could be utilized to guide the transfer of the grafted functional species on the particle surface. This provides many possibilities for potential applications in chemical and biochemical fields.

Extraction of biologic particles by pumping effect in a pi-shaped ultrasonic actuator.

This paper presents a new method of extracting biologic particles from a mixture of particles. The method is based on the pumping effect in a pi-shaped ultrasonic actuator, which has a gap between its two vibrating metal plates. An adhesive tape is placed at a proper position in the gap. Due to the pumping effect which is induced by the sound field in the gap, the particles with smaller mass and radius in the mixture can be pumped up to reach the adhesive tape; while the ones with larger mass cannot. Therefore, the particles with smaller mass and radius can be extracted from the mixture. A theoretical model which can well explain the operation principle and experimental phenomena is developed. By the experimental results and the theoretical analyses based on the model, the validity of the method in extracting small particles from a mixture of solid particles in air is confirmed, and the effects of the actuator's vibration, adhesive tape height, contents of the mixture and viscosity of fluid on the extraction are clarified. Also, it is theoretically predicted that the method will work under the microgravity condition in air.

Water absorption characteristics of novel Cu/LDPE nanocomposite for use in intrauterine devices.

Intrauterine devices (IUDs), especially the copper-containing IUDs (Cu-IUDs), are one of the worldwide used forms for birth control, owing to their advantages of long-lasting and high efficacy, economy, safety, and reversibility. However, it is not perfect for the existing Cu-IUDs; some shortcomings related to its side effects have not been overcome yet. For this reason, a new Cu-IUDs material, the copper/low-density polyethylene (Cu/LDPE) nanocomposite, has been developed in our research team. The structure and water uptake characteristics of this new Cu-IUDs material have been investigated by using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and gravimetric analysis in this paper. The results of XRD, SEM, EDS, and FT-IR show three important outcomes associated with the structure of the nanocomposite. First, the nanocomposite is hybrid of the polymer and the copper nanoparticles (nano-Cu). Second, porosities, nano-Cu aggregates, and primary alcohol (R--CH(2)--OH) are existed in the nanocomposite. Third, the nano-Cu aggregates are distributed uniformly in the polymer matrix in general. The results of Gravimetric analysis, which associated with the water uptake characteristics of the nanocomposite, exhibit that the water absorption behavior of the nanocomposite obeys the classical diffusion theory very well, the water uptake of the nanocomposite increases with the increasing of the nano-Cu loading, and that the water uptake ability of the nanocomposite with 15.0 wt % nano-Cu (50 nm in diameter) is about 150 times larger than that of the base resin and about 45 times higher than that of the Cu/LDPE microcomposite with 15.0 wt % copper microparticles (5 microm in diameter). These water uptake characteristics are mainly attributed to the structure of the Cu/LDPE composites and the size effect of the nano-Cu.

Ultrasonic collection of small particles by a tapered metal strip.

A pi-shaped ultrasonic actuator can collect small particles by its two sharp edges. However, the collection of particles is weak in air and not very stable in water. In this paper, a refinement to the pi-shaped ultrasonic actuator is made for a more efficient collection of small particles in air and water. In the refined structure, an ultrasonic actuator with a metal strip is used to collect small particles. The metal strip is mechanically driven by one corner of a rectangular, sandwich-shaped ultrasonic transducer operating in the thickness mode vibration. The metal strip is tapered along its length and has a strong vibration at its tip. Small particles in air and water can be attracted to the radiation surface near the end of the metal strip. The dependence of the number of collected particles on driving frequency and voltage is investigated for shrimp eggs, mint seeds, and grass seeds. For a given driving voltage and particle type, the number of collected particles reaches a maximum value at some driving frequency. Increasing driving voltage increases this maximum number to some extent; but too large a driving voltage decreases it. The maximum number also depends on the weight per particle. It increases as the weight per particle decreases for the particles with close densities. Furthermore, the relationship between the number of collected particles and vibration amplitude at the end of the metal strip is investigated for shrimp eggs, mint seeds, and grass seeds. The number is approximately linearly proportional to the vibration amplitude when the vibration amplitude is not too large. In addition to the application in which the length of the metal strip is parallel to gravitation, the actuator also can be used with its length perpendicular to gravitation. However, the latter has a weaker capability of collecting small particles. It is also found that the actuator has a stronger capability to collect particles in water than in air.

Modeling and analysis of dual-output piezoelectric transformer operating at the thickness-shear vibration mode.

In our previous study, the multioutput piezoelectric transformer operating at the thickness-shear vibration mode was proposed and experimentally investigated. By designing a new construction of support and lead wire connection, a power density of 52.7 W/cm3 and a total output power of 169.8 W were achieved at a temperature rise less than 20 degrees C. In this work, a theoretical model was developed for the dual-output piezoelectric transformer operating at the thickness-shear vibration mode. The equivalent circuit parameters of the piezoelectric transformer were derived. Based on this, the impedance characteristics, equivalent inductance, capacitance ratio, voltage gain, and efficiency of the piezoelectric transformer were calculated. The theoretical results were verified by experimental data. Furthermore, the effect of the transformer size on the voltage gain, efficiency, output power and power density, and the effect of the load of one output on the voltage gain of another output were analyzed. Some useful guidelines were achieved by these analyses.

A pi-shaped ultrasonic tweezers concept for manipulation of small particles.

A pi-shaped ultrasonic actuator is proposed for the noncontact trapping, extraction, and transportation of small particles. In this actuator, two metal plates clamp a multilayer piezoelectric vibrator by a small bolt, and the metal plates are tapered in their lower parts so that a vibration gradient can be obtained. The flexural vibration of the metal plates is used to generate a sound field in the gap between the two tapered metal plates. At a driving frequency of about 152.8 kHz, shrimp eggs, grass seeds, thyme seeds, rice powder, fine salt, and fine sugar, which have an average diameter from several tens of micrometers to several hundreds of micrometers, can be trapped stably without contact with the actuator, and the particles insoluble in water can be extracted from water and transported in water by the actuator. In the noncontact trapping of small particles, the positions of trapped particles as well as the relationship among the number of trapped particles, vibration velocity, and input power are investigated. The number of trapped particles increases as the vibration velocity or input power increases. However, when the vibration velocity or input power is too large, the particles may be ejected out of the actuator and, therefore, cannot be stably trapped. The minimum vibration velocity to trap small particles increases as particle density increases for the particles that have the shape near to a sphere and a proper density. In the extraction of small particles from water, the relationship between the number of extracted thyme seeds and the input power is investigated. Increasing the input power can increase the extracted thyme seeds. However, there is a maximum particle number that can be extracted from water. In the transportation of thyme seeds in water, the dependence of the particle loss during the transportation on the speed and distance of transportation and the input power is experimentally estimated. As the distance and speed of transportation increase, the particle loss during the transportation increases. Increasing the input power increases the trapping effect and, therefore, decreases the particle loss.

High-power, multioutput piezoelectric transformers operating at the thickness-shear vibration mode.

In this study, a piezoelectric transformer operating at the thickness shear vibration mode and with dual or triple outputs is proposed. It consists of a lead zirconate titanate (PZT) ceramic plate with a high mechanical quality factor Qm and a size of 120 x 20 x 4 mm3. The PZT ceramic plate is poled along the width direction. The electrodes of input and output parts are on the top and bottom surfaces of the ceramic plate and separated by narrow gaps. A new construction of support and lead wire connection is used for the transformer. At a temperature rise less than 20 degrees C and efficiency of 90%, the piezoelectric transformer with dual outputs has a maximum total output power of 169.8 W, with a power of 129.5 W in one output and 40.3 W in another. The one with triple outputs has a maximum total output power of 163.1 W, with a power of 36.9 W in the first output, 13.0 W in the second output and 113.2 W in the third output. The maximum efficiency of the piezoelectric transformer with dual outputs and triple outputs is 98% and 95.7%, respectively. The voltage gains of the transformers are less than one, and different outputs have different gains. Also, there is a driving frequency range in which the load resistance of one output has little effect on the voltage gain of another output.

Stability analysis of an acoustically levitated disk.

In this paper, a model is developed for the stability analysis of an acoustically levitated disk on the basis of analyzing eddy acoustic streaming and acoustic viscous stress. In the model, the effect of the acoustic streaming outside the boundary layer that is on the surface of the levitated disk is properly taken into account. Also, the calculation of sound field and acoustic viscous stress is limited to the range that has a dominant effect on the stability. By this method, we obtain a quite accurate solution of the stability coefficient. For the small horizontal shift of a large levitated disk, the model is verified by the good agreement between the experimental and theoretical results. By means of this model and relevant experiments, some factors that affect the stability of the levitated disk are investigated, and useful guidelines for design and application are obtained. It is found that the range from the edge to the outermost nodal circle of the disk-shaped vibrator has a large effect on the stability of the levitated disk. To stabilize the levitated disk by acoustic viscous force, the distance between the edge and the outermost nodal circle of the vibrator must be larger than a critical value, which is determined by the driving frequency and the sound velocity of the fluid between the levitated disk and the vibrator. When this condition is satisfied, increasing the distance between the edge and the outermost nodal circle leads to a decrease in the stability. It is also found that the property of the fluid between the levitated disk and the vibrator has a large effect on the stability. It is easier to stabilize the levitated disk in steam than in air, but more difficult to do so in carbon dioxide and hydrogen. In addition, theoretical results show that increasing the weight per unit area of the levitated object increases the stability for a given vibrator velocity. The distribution of the acoustic viscous stress and the dependence of the stability coefficient and the holding force on the horizontal shift of the levitated disk, which are obtained by this study, also are useful to a better understanding of the stability of the levitated disk.

Analyses of the temperature field in a bar-shaped piezoelectric transformer operating in longitudinal vibration mode.

In this study, a theoretical model of the steady-state temperature field in a bar-shaped piezoelectric transformer operating in longitudinal vibration mode is developed, and the characteristics of the temperature field are analyzed numerically. Being different from previous work, the effects of the stress distribution and the relative positions of input and output parts on the internal loss distribution are taken into account in this model. Using this model, the temperature rise and its distribution are calculated, and the effects of ambient temperature, internal loss distribution, size, heat dissipation coefficient, and heat conductivity of the transformer on the temperature rise are estimated. The calculated temperature rise and its distribution agree quite well with the experimental data. It is found that the allowable output power of the transformer should be reduced markedly when the ambient temperature increases to maintain a reasonable working temperature for the piezoelectric material of the transformer. It also is found that decreasing wavelength, making internal loss distribution uniform, and increasing the ratio of perimeter to area of the cross section (for example, decreasing the cross-sectional area and using a thin plate structure), decrease the temperature rise for a given internal loss per unit volume. Furthermore, it is revealed that the heat dissipation coefficient has a remarkable effect on the temperature rise at a large internal loss, and the variation in the heat conductivity of the piezoelectric material has little effect on the temperature rise.
