Modelling gene flow between oilseed rape and wild radish. I. Evolution of chromosome structure.

The assessment of gene flow from crop species to weeds has found a new emphasis over the last years because of the marketing of transgenic crops and the possible selective advantage that crop (trans)gene may confer to the weeds. Several studies focused on the F1 interspecific hybrid production but few data are available on the factors affecting the genetic structure of advanced generations. It depends on the genomic structure of the species concerned as well as on the degree of their genome homology that affect the occurrence of intergenomic recombination. Oilseed rape (Brassica napus, AACC, 2n = 38)-wild radish (Raphanus raphanistrum, RrRr, 2n = 18), a distantly related weed, is a good model to address such questions. From seven male sterile oilseed rape lines carrying an herbicide tolerance transgene, F1 interspecific hybrids and four advanced generations were produced under field conditions with wild radish as pollinator. Observation of hybrid chromosome numbers across four generations revealed a high variability, especially in the "BC1" generation. A regression model was fitted in order to describe the relationship between parent and offspring chromosome numbers. The effects of generation, transgenic line and selection pressure on the mean relationship were investigated. The first two factors had an influence on the rate of decrease of chromosome numbers, whereas selection pressure resulted in the presence of an additional chromosome in the herbicide treated plants. The model provided a convenient framework for analysing how chromosome numbers evolve over successive hybridization events and it may prove useful as a basis for simulation-based approaches.

Evaluation of nursing care standard in a neurological ward.

Providing high quality of nursing care is extremely important with respect to the specific character of neurology, dealing with negative consequences of chronic and incurable diseases which often lead to disability. Quality in nursing denotes the degree of achieving the desired effects with respect to the state of health and health promoting attitudes. The precondition for the provision of quality is the development and implementation of the standards of care. The standard is an average typical model or pattern which is attainable and measurable, i.e. a basic level below which the performance is not acceptable. A standard contains the following criteria: structural (staff, technology, finance), process (provision of services), and effect measuring the effectiveness of the nursing care. The evaluation was conducted in the Neurology Ward at State Hospital No. 4 in Lublin by the assessment of the work of nurses and its effects, based on a sample of 85 patients. Evaluation was carried out by comparing the nursing standard provided in practice and the theoretical standard which covered a complete realisation of the structural criteria and partial fulfillment of process and effect criteria. This resulted in the majority of patients (61.5%) obtaining optimum functional independence.

Health education and radicular syndrome.

The aim of the study was to determine the level of health education among 45 patients with radicular syndrome--21 males and 24 females aged 23-64. The level of health education was measured twice: prior to and after health education. At Stage I of the study the level of knowledge was generally low, the mean percentage of correct answers to all questions being 43.0%; whereas at Stage II this percentage was significantly higher, the level of knowledge was defined as satisfactory and increased by 33.4% reaching the value 76.5%. The highest level of knowledge was observed with respect to the principles concerning lifting and handling loads, as well as learning; while the lowest level--with respect to the correct standing position, both during the first and the second measurement (slightly over 50% of respondents correctly described this position.

[Histopathological verification of the cervical pap smears based on material of the obstetrical-gynecological department of the provincial hospital in Kielce].

The results of the cervical Pap. smear taken before cold knife conization and the histopathological results of the cones removed in 336 women, were compared. In cytological examination we found 10.8% (13/120) false negative results, which did not confirm of the existence the precancerous lesion within cervical epithelium. The mild dysplasia according to Pap. smears was established among 15.9% (15/94) of women with CIN III and CIN II diagnosed pathologically. In part of the women the histopathological results of the postoperative specimens and bioptic cervical material were compared. Clinical value and correlation between histopathological and cytological results in the estimation of CIN (cervical intraepithelial neoplasia) were discussed with particular regard to CIN I according to Bethesda system.
