Computed tomographic demonstration of hemobilia.

A patient with hemobilia presumably due to a small hemangioma in the liver is presented. The condition was diagnosed by computed tomography (CT) done immediately following hepatic arteriography and confirmed by hem-positive duodenal aspirates on two occasions.

Simultaneous bilateral radiation for advanced bilateral retinoblastoma.

A retrospective review of 1,424 cases of retinoblastoma disclosed 34 patients with advanced bilateral retinoblastoma whose sole initial treatment was simultaneous bilateral radiation. All patients had a combination of bilateral group IV or V retinoblastoma. Mean age at diagnosis was 13.1 months. Five-year survival of patients was 88% (28/32). In two (7%) of 28 surviving patients, a second nonocular tumor developed: one inside and one outside the field of radiation. Of the 64 eyes treated, 44 ultimately were enucleated. Of ten eyes requiring a second course of radiation, nine were enucleated. In only one eye was enucleation due to radiation complications. Eleven patients required additional treatment with light coagulation, cryopexy, or cobalt plaques.

Normal neuropsychological abilities of alcoholic men in their late thirties.

The neuropsychological performance of alcoholic men in their late 30s (mean age, 37 years), some of whom has been abstinent for 3 weeks and others for 18 months, was compared with that of a group of men who drank occasionally. There were no differences between the alcoholic groups and the comparison group that could not be attributed to normal aging. The number of years of alcoholism or estimated lifetime alcohol use, dietary adequacy, and medical or blackout history did not relate to neuropsychological impairment. The authors suggest that a simple "dose-effect" relationship between alcohol use and cognitive decline cannot be assumed.

Lung damage in C57B1 mice following thoracic irradiation: enhancement by chemotherapy.

C57Bl mice were treated with thoracic irradiation to doses in the range 12.0 to 18.9 gray. Few deaths were observed in the period 80--160 days after irradiation (an end-point of lung damage used by other investigators) and the median survival times ranged from 200 to 310 days. CBA mice treated under identical conditions predominantly died between 80--160 days and it is therefore concluded that C57Bl mice show unusually prolonged survival following this treatment. Six chemotherapeutic agents were given to C57Bl mice together with thoracic irradiation, in most cases two weeks beforehand. Adriamycin, bleomycin and cyclophosphamide enhanced the mortality of the mice. Most agents had little effect on radiation-induced skin damage.

Computed tomography after psychosurgery.

The computed tomography scans of patients who had frontal leukotomy show bilateral cysts in the frontal lobes that have attenuation values similar to cerebrospinal fluid, and are not contrast enhanced.

Influence of granulation liquid flow rate on particle-size distribution in spray-granulate products.

Granulations were made at various air speeds and various rates of addition of granulating liquid in a spray-granulatin assembly. The ensuring particle sizes were log-normal, and the data substantiate that the process is of the nature previously described. The mean diameter obtained was approximately proportional to the liquid flow rate squared but was independent of air rate. The standard deviation was independent of both parameters.
