A 38-yr-old woman with a history of malignant melanoma (MM) presented with a thyroidal nodule. Fine needle aspiration biopsy of the thyroid was consistent with metastatic MM. The patient underwent thyroidectomy: microscopic examination revealed a follicular carcinoma nodule harboring a focus of metastatic melanoma. On review of the fine needle aspiration biopsy specimen, the population of cells with more uniform nuclei with focal follicle formation, which initially was interpreted as cells originating from normal thyroid tissue, was seen to actually represent the follicular carcinoma component. Tumor-to-tumor metastasis is an interesting phenomenon and there are only few cases of MM metastasis to other tumors. MM metastasis into a neoplastic thyroid nodule is a very rare combination and may be explained because the nodule in question represents the most highly vascularized component of the thyroid.

Synchronous squamous cell carcinoma of the stomach, the lung and the skin.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of multiple primary cancers is reported to be 0.3-4.3%. CASE REPORT: A 70-year-old man was admitted to the hospital because of fatigue, weight loss, epigastric pain with melena. A biopsy taken from a tumoral lesion in the gastric corpus revealed squamous cell carcinoma. A nodular lesion was also detected on the nasal columella and biopsy from this lesion also showed squamous cell carcinoma. Computed tomography performed as a part of metastatic work-up revealed a lesion in the left pulmonary lower lobe. Bronchoscopic biopsy from this lesion also demonstrated squamous cell carcinoma. RESULTS: We report a case with synchronous squamous cell carcinoma of the lung, skin and stomach and discuss the multiple synchronous occurrence of carcinoma with the same histopathology in different sites with a review of the literature.

Myasthenic crisis following cisplatin chemotherapy in a patient with malignant thymoma.

Malignant thymomas are associated with numerous autoimmune disorders including myasthenia gravis. Myastenia gravis is characterized by antibodies against the acetylcholine receptors located on the neuromuscular junction of the skeletal muscle. We present a case with malignant thymoma who developed myasthenia crisis while he was treated with cisplatin chemotherapy.
