Digital imaging in the assessment of facial deformity.

A combination of digital imaging and conventional radiographic techniques has been used to obtain a life-size composite image of the facial soft tissue profile, the skull, and the teeth, anatomically superimposed on each other. The system overcomes major problems associated with assessment of facial deformity such as magnification, the exposure of photographs and radiographs from different positions, radiographs with overexposed soft tissue profiles, lengthy procedures in photographic studios, and, in addition, enables a degree of partial automation in the management of patients.

Odontodysplasia, gingival manifestations, and accompanying abnormalities.

Regional odontodysplasia is an uncommon developmental dental disorder that may occasionally be accompanied by other abnormalities. A case is described in which the chief report was of a gingival enlargement arising in a female patient who also had dolichocephaly, thin calvarium, clinodactyly and transverse grooving of her fingernails, and a history of abnormal hair. Previously suggested etiologic factors and cases reported in association with other abnormalities are reviewed.

Four measurements for assessing facial deformity.

Four lateral cephalometric measurements which localize the anterior maxilla and chin in the horizontal and vertical planes are presented and evaluated against three control methods, in a pilot study of 40 patients. It was found that in 27 out of 30 comparisons (90%) the frequency of agreement between the proposed and each of the control methods was greater than the agreement between the control methods themselves. In three out of 30 comparisons (10%) it was found that the frequency of agreement between the proposed and the control methods was the same as between the controls themselves. In addition, there was a greater agreement reached between methods when measurements were related to the cranial base. In view of the close relationship between cranial and facial development, it was considered that measuring ratios should portray the facial deformity not just in relation to the cranial base but to the individual's own cranial base and not to a population norm. The results also confirm the findings of previous work in the literature which demonstrate disagreement between cephalometric methods for localization of a given landmark.

Changes in the facial profile following correction for mandibular prognathism.

A retrospective study of 33 patients was undertaken to investigate the changes occurring in the facial profile following surgical correction of mandibular prognathism. The parameters measured included surface area, shift of selected points, facial outline length and directional measurement in relation to the sella-nasion plane. The calculation of linear regression equations enabled prediction of the shift of selected soft tissue points and facial outline length. It is considered, that the analysis provides an accurate picture of the behaviour of the soft tissues in response to a given amount of bony movement following correction of the deformity.

A pigmented odontogenic keratocyst.

A pigmented odontogenic keratocyst arising in a white Caucasian female is reported. Melanocytes in the basal cell layer were identified by light and electron microscopy.
