"This paper examines the implications of demographic transition...on kinship relationships in India during 1971-1988. Three simulations based on the schedules of fertility and mortality of India during 1971, 1981, and 1988 have been undertaken. The kinship size constitutes parents, grand parents, siblings (brothers and sisters) and children. Improved mortality condition has increased the percentage of kins in ancestor generation. The percentage of kins in ancestor generation was 15 percent in 1988 as compared to 8.5 percent in 1971.... The increase in the percent of kins in ancestor generation and the support ratio obviously shows the aging of the population."
The authors outline the organization and administration of India's National Family Health Survey, for which data collection was scheduled for completion in June 1993. Data analysis and survey objectives are discussed, as well as some political factors affecting data collection. It is noted that "the National Family Health Survey is...a large-scale sample survey covering 97 per cent of the population and involving more than 90,500 households.... Another feature of the NFHS is its uniformity in questionnaire design, sample design, data collection and analysis. This uniformity provides an opportunity for inter-state comparison."

"In this paper an attempt is made to estimate the truncation bias in the mean length of closed birth interval caused by the termination of observations after [a] certain time, through the application of a stochastic model based on certain simplified assumptions. The approach is further evolved to determine the relative contributions of...chance and systematic components to the variance of closed birth interval when the fecundability parameter follows a priori distribution. Some numerical results have also been presented for the purpose of illustration."
"An attempt has been made to present two regression equations for estimating total fertility rate from the birth order data. While one of the equations has been derived from the longitudinal data of Malaysia another has been obtained from cross sectional data on Mother's total fertility rate...and births of orders one and two. These equations are used to estimate the [total fertility rate] for the districts of [Uttar Pradesh, India,] which are quite close to the estimates obtained by using other methods."
A life table analysis is made of the duration of breast-feeding and post-partum amenorrhoea in Orissa, India, taking one variable at a time using data from a baseline survey of fertility and mortality (BSFM) conducted on the lines of the World Fertility Survey. Then a multivariate (proportional hazard) analysis showed that socioeconomic factors including residence, caste status and education influence the breast-feeding and post-partum amenorrhoea periods. There was no effect of maternal age on the length of breast-feeding, but mean length of post-partum amenorrhoea varied with age. The durations of breast-feeding and post-partum amenorrhoea are strongly related.

"Based on some simple assumptions regarding [the] human reproduction process, a continuous time stochastic model for describing the variation in any closed birth interval of a woman of marital duration (t) has been developed. The model incorporates the possibility of the variation of the amenorrhea period among the women under observation. For illustration, the model is applied to an observed closed birth interval between first and second births of the women with marital duration of seven years."
