The topography of regio caudalis hypothalami in goose (Anser anser F. domestica).

We studied the topography of the caudal hypothalamic region of the goose on brain sections stained with luxol fast blue and cresyl violet in combination according to Klüver-Barrera (1953), or with cresyl violet (Nissl method). In the regio caudalis hypothalami of this bird we identified in agreement with Nomina anatomica avium (Breazile 1979): nucleus premamillaris (PM), nucleus mamillaris lateralis (ML), nucleus mamillaris medialis (MM), nucleus supramamillaris interstitialis (SMI) and nucleus intercalatus (Ic).

Effect of transtympanally applied lidocaine on the cochleovestibular function.

Twenty-two patients with recurring attacks of tinnitus, hearing loss and dizziness were treated with transtympanally injected lidocaine. The tinnitus improved in 19, and the pure tone and speech audiometric thresholds decreased in 15 cases. The dizziness and latent spontaneous nystagmus disappeared in all subjects where these symptoms were manifest before treatment.

The renal response of sheep to a low dietary nitrogen intake.

Renal functions were tested in sheep fed on a low nitrogen diet (LN sheep), with a daily N intake of 4.7 g (gross energy 17.76 . 10(6) J). Sheep given a high nitrogen diet (HN sheep) with 21.2 g N (24.12 . 10(6) J) acted as the control. The functions of the left kidney were measured in anaesthetized animals by the standard clearance technique. A comparison of HN and LN sheep showed that a low nitrogen intake led to a drop in the plasma urea level (from 5.91 +/- 0.35 to 2.87 +/- 0.36 mmol.1-1, (P less than 0.001), the glomerular filtration rate (GFR, from 36.6 +/- 3.6 to 20.7 +/- 2.4 ml.min-1, P less than 0.005), amount of urea excreted (from 106.7 +/- 18.1 to 15.7 +/- 3.3 mumol.min-1, P less than 0.001), fractional urea excretion (from 51.0 +/- 3.0 to 24.6 +/- 3.1 %, P less than 0.001) and the absolute tubular reabsorption of urea (Reaburea/GFR (from 3.06 +/- 0.27 to 2.12 +/- 0.28 mumol.ml-1, P less than 0.05), without a significant change in the effective renal plasma flow (182.6 +/- 20.0 and 138.5 +/- 21.0 ml.min-1, non-significant - N.S.) and in sodium and potassium excretory function. Free water clearance rose in LN sheep (from -0.53 +/- 0.11 to -0.19 +/- 0.06 ml.min-1, P less than 0.05) owing to inhibited urea excretion. A regression analysis of the relationship of the tubular reabsorption of urea to the amount of filtered urea (both normalized to the GFR) showed that the urea transport capacity of the tubules of LN sheep was significantly higher.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Inhibiting effect of foetal renal antigen on leukocyte migration in human glomerulonephritis.

In 141 cases of glomerulonephritis confirmed by renal biopsy it was demonstrated that foetal glomerular basement membrane antigen caused a migration inhibition most frequently in minimal change glomerulonephritis. Cellular hypersensitivity was less common in membranous nephropathy, membranoproliferative (I-III) glomerulonephritis, IgA nephropathy and lupus nephritis. The correlation between LMT positivity and the occurrence of renal tissue IF activity was a linear one, but in one type, minimal change glomerulonephritis, there was no such correlation. The occurrence of LMT positivity does not show any considerable difference in glomerulonephritis with and without nephrosis.

Food intake control and RNA content of hypothalamic neurons in infant rats.

The influence of glycerol, glucose and lysine administration on the total RNA content in individual neurons of the ventromedial hypothalamus (VMH) and lateral hypothalamus area (LHA) in infant male rats was studied. Sixty minutes after administration, the total RNA content of the VMH neurons significantly decreased--from 13th day after glycerol and from 17th day after the glucose and lysine administration. The total RNA content of LHA neurons significantly increased from 17th day after glycerol and glucose and on 25th day after lysine administration. The noted changes of the RNA content, and especially the changes of the RNA proportion in these hypothalamic regions are well corresponding with the onset of the hypophagic effect of glycerol, glucose and amino acids in infant rats. The oppositional changes of the RNA content of VMH and LHA neurons are in conformity with the different role of these hypothalamic centers in food intake control.

The isolation and some properties of dairy cow liver mitochondria.

The problem of the isolation of intact mitochondria from dairy cow liver, which arises from the relative rigidity of this tissue for homogenization, was overcome by prehomogenizing the tissue in an Ultra-Turrax TP 18-10 apparatus, followed by homogenization in a Potter-Elvehjem homogenizer. The mitochondria isolated from such a homogenate displayed, on various substrates, ADP/O ratio and a respiratory control ratio (RCR) comparable with those of rat liver mitochondria. The specific activity of DNP-stimulated ATP-ase of mitochondria isolated from dairy cow liver exhibited about 60% of the activity of mitochondria isolated from rat liver; oligomycin inhibition in the two cases was the same. The transport properties of the inner mitochondrial membrane for phosphate, acetoacetate, D,L-3-hydroxybutyrate, malate, fumarate, succinate and citrate were comparable with those of rat liver mitochondria.

A comparative study of the inhibitory effect of trypan blue on mouse erythrocyte and C3 binding receptors of peripheral blood mononuclear cells from healthy donors and patients suffering from chronic lymphocytic leukaemia.

Trypan blue has previously been shown to interact with the C3 receptor, but not with the Fc receptor. In the present work the effects of Trypan blue on mouse erythrocyte (ME) and C3 binding receptors of the peripheral blood mononuclear cells have been studied in healthy individuals and in patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). The resulting dose-response curves have been compared with each another. The results of statistical analysis indicate that there is no significant difference between the effects of trypan blue on the two receptors in healthy individuals. In contrast ME and C3 binding receptors differ significantly in trypan blue sensitivity in CLL patients. These data suggest that the two receptors are similar, or are situated on the cell membrane in such a way that the trypan blue bound to one of them inhibits the functioning of the other one too, but they are not the same. In the course of leukemic transformation, the trypan blue sensitivity of the ME binding receptor does not vary, whereas that of the C3 receptor is enhanced significantly.

Comparison of cardiotocograms prepared by abdominal electrocardiography and by ultrasound cardiography.

Cardiotocograms were prepared in 127 cases on 120 pregnant women, first by abdominal electrocardiography, and immediately afterwards by ultrasound cardiography. A study was made to ascertain which method yielded recordings of higher quality, and which factors influenced the quality of the cardiotocogram. It was found that the proportion of good-quality recordings was higher with ultrasound cardiography than with abdominal electrocardiography. The higher information content of the latter technique allows a more accurate assessment of the cardiotocograms. The recording quality is affected by numerous factors, the most important of which are adiposity and the duration of pregnancy. The use of abdominal electrocardiography is preferred in case of a thick abdominal wall, whereas the ultrasound technique is recommended between the 28th and 36th weeks of pregnancy.

Utilization of endogenous urea secreted into the gastrointestinal tract of the sheep.

The possibility of the utilization of endogenous urea secreted into the gastrointestinal tract was studied in sheep to which a single dose of 3 g 15N urea (50.4% enrichment) was administered by slow infusion via a permanent surgical cannula into the caecum. During a 7 days' experiment, 31.15 +/- 1.08% of the dose was excreted in the urine and 19.65 +/- 1.08% in the faeces, while 49.20 +/- 1.49% was retained in the organism. The maximum 15N values in blood from the jugular vein were found 10 h after starting the infusion and a high concentration was maintained for a further 24 h; sixty hours after the infusion, no more 15N was found in the blood. The maximum 15N values in the total nitrogen of the rumen contents were observed 24 h after the infusion and low levels could still be detected on the 6th day of the experiment. Evidence that 15N participates in enterohepatic and ruminohepatic circulation, and that it is also utilized, is based on the finding of the total, but mainly the protein nitrogen concentration in the duodenum. The maximum 15N values in the total nitrogen (0.247 +/- 0.041 At % 15N) and protein nitrogen (0.262 +/- 0.023 At % 15N) of the duodenal contents were found 24 h after the infusion and 15N could still be demonstrated there in the nitrogen fractions on the 5th day of the experiment.

Surgical treatment of mitral valve disease: late results with valve replacement.

Computer aided data processing of the results of surgery in 504 patients with mitral (and mitral + aortic + tricuspid) valvular disease, operated on by the Szeged cardiosurgery group between 1966-1983 are discussed. Late results after valve surgery are investigated from the point of view of survival time, functional state and social rehabilitation. Statistical evaluation of postoperative complications and the functional life-time of the Cross-Jones prosthesis are reported. The functional rehabilitation following the operation is mathematically assessed.

The effect of rutin-N-mustard on the survival of NK/Ly ascites tumour-bearing mice.

A newly synthetized rutin derivative, rutin-N-mustard, showed a marked antiproliferative effect on NK/Ly ascites tumour cells in vivo. When administered i.p. or i.v., this compound increased the survival time of the animals, but oral administration had no such effect. The drug was not able to kill the tumour cells, since the chromium release from the rutin-N-mustard-treated tumour cells was the same as in the case of the controls. Tumour growth was completely inhibited in the animals when the cells were pretreated with 100 mg/kg rutin-N-mustard before transplantation. The results also showed that rutin-N-mustard has little effect on the xenogenization of NK/Ly tumour cells. We presume that the antiproliferative action of rutin-N-mustard is due to its alkylating activity.

[The usefulness of polyethylene for quickly measuring the rate of food passage through the digestive tract of ruminants].

In experiments with 5 rams it was investigated whether it is possible to use pulverised polyethylene for measuring the passage rate of the feed through the digestive tract. Polyethylene of a particle diameter of 0.4 mm and the specific weight of 0.924 represented 1.78 and 3.56% of the pelleted diet, which contained 41.8% meadow hay, 25.3% barley, 15.4% beech sawdust, 15% molasses, 1.3% urea, 1.2% mixture of vitamins and minerals. After the single polyethylene application to 3 sheep the quota of its recovery in faeces was 68.9-74.4-87.4%. During the continuous polyethylene application over 8 days 64.8% was rediscovered, after the end of the application 80.25% (12th day). The best results in the quota of recovery were achieved after the application of the continuous daily ration with 25 g polyethylene per fistula during the feeding of a ground feed ration with additionally long hay. In this case the quota of the recovery of polyethylene was between 93.2 and 98.9%. The low quota of the recovery of polyethylene was probably caused by retention in the rumen and the large intestine, which was corroborated by the pathologic-anatomic dissection one month after the end of the experiment. Possibly there is a different explanation for the low quotas of recovery both in the size and the shape of the polyethylene particles and in the method of determination and the method of application.

The effect of ring-substituted and quaternary chlorpromazine derivatives on the survival of the NK/Ly ascites tumor bearing mice.

The effect of quaternary chlorpromazines like-methiodide, allylammonium chloride, -octylammonium iodide, benzylammonium chloride, -phenacylammonium bromide, 9-phenanthryl-methylammonium bromide, trimethylene-bis-chlorpromazine-ammonium bromide and among the ring-substituted derivatives the 7-hydroxy-, 7,8-dihydroxy-, 7,8-dioxo-, 6,9-dihydroxy-, 6,9-dioxo-chlorpromazines and the chlorpromazine-5-oxide on the prolongation of survival time of NK/Ly ascites tumor bearing mice was studied. The intraperitoneally administered quaternary chlorpromazine derivatives in 10-25 mg/kg daily dose did not increase the life span of the animals, and did not prevent the development of the ascites tumor. However some ring system substituted chlorpromazines such as the 7,8-dioxo- and 6,9-dioxo-derivatives markedly increased the survival time of the tumor bearing mice and reduced the ascite volume in 10 mg/kg body weight dose.

The effect of androgen and estrogen on food intake and body weight in rats--age dependency.

The age dependency of changes in food intake and body weight in Wistar rats after androgen and estrogen treatment was followed. The 5 age categories of female rats were treated by androgen and the 6 age categories of male rats were treated by estrogen. The androgen treatment induced an expressive increase in weight gains in all age categories of female rats, except the 1st (after birth), during 25 days from the beginning of the experiments. The increase of weight gains resulted in significantly higher body weight on the 25th day of experiments in the experimental rats. The differences in weight gains among the individual experimental groups after androgen treatment show a rising effect with the age of the animals. There was only a slight increase of food intake in the older experimental groups during the androgen treatment. The estrogen treatment in male rats induced an expressive decrease in weight gains in the 2nd age category (after weaning) and losses of body weight in older experimental groups during 20 days from the beginning of the treatment. The body weight of experimental animals on the 20th day was significantly lower than in the control ones. The losses of the body weight after the estrogen treatment rose with the age of the rats. The food intake was also considerably decreased by estrogen treatments, approximately equally in all experimental groups. The comparison of magnitude of the changes in food intake and body weight after androgen and estrogen treatments indicates that the primary effect of these hormones is their anabolic or catabolic activity which secondarily induces the changes in food intake and its utilization.

Electrical activity of the amygdala and the septum of rats on a high fat or a high protein diet.

The authors studied biopotentials in the region of the amygdala and the septum of rats fed on a standard, high protein or high fat diet. During the first 3-6 days after changing from the standard to the high protein or high fat diet, a decrease in the amplitude of electrical activity was found in both the regions in question. After 3 days on the high fat or the high protein diet, an increase was found in the frequency of electrical activity in the amygdala or the septum, according to the type of diet. A study of the amplitude of electrical activity showed that the electrical potential in the septum was always lower than in the amygdala. The frequency spectrum analysis showed a marked change in the superimposed frequency curve only in animals fed on the high fat diet.
