A chromosomal study on blood lymphocytes of patients poisoned by polychlorinated biphenyls.

Chromosome studies were carried out on peripheral blood lymphocytes from 36 PCB-poisoned patients and on ten PCB-unexposed healthy controls. Nineteen out of 36 patients (52.7%) had either chromosome or chromatid aberrations, while none of the controls had. The highest percentage of cells with chromosome or chromatid aberrations in a single individual was 34.0. The blood PCB level ranged from 6.4 to 101.8 ppb, with a mean of 34.1 ppb. No correlation was observed between the level of blood PCB and the presence or absence of chromosome or chromatid aberrations.

A cytogenetic survey of mentally retarded children in Taiwan: final report on the incidence of chromosome abnormalities.

A cytogenetic survey of 470 mentally retarded children from three different sources is reported. Thirty-eight patients (8.08%) were found to have recognizable chromosome abnormalities, including 4 cases of sex chromosomes and 34 cases of autosomes. The most prominent category of abnormality was trisomic 21, a total of 26 cases of this type was found in this study. Sex chromosome abnormalities contribute very little to the etiology of mental retardation. From the results of our three groups of patients as well as from those surveyed by others, it is concluded that the more severe the degree of mental retardation, the higher the incidence of chromosome abnormalities.

Biologic properties of three newly established human esophageal carcinoma cell lines.

Three epithelial cell lines, CE-48T/VGH, CE-69T/-VGH, and CE-81T/VGH, were established from human squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus. The cells were polygonal with a high nucleus-to-cytoplasm ratio. Many cells were multinucleate. Electron microscopy revealed the presence of tonofilaments and desmosomes. Chromosome analysis showed that these 3 cell lines were heteroploids of human origin. When transplanted into BALB/c (nu/nu) mice, CE-69T/VGH and CE-81T/VGH produced tumors, the histology of which proved to be carcinomas. All 3 cell lines secreted carcinoembryonic antigen. However, the secretion patterns were different. These 3 cell lines may provide useful models for the study of human esophageal cancer.

Inhibition of the reverse transcriptase of bovine leukemia virus by antibody in sera from leukemic cattle and immunological characterization of the enzyme.

Sera from some leukemic cattle contain an antibody that inhibits the reverse transcriptase activity of the bovine leukemia virus. The antibody is not directed against the synthetic template or the major internal and envelope viral antigens. The antibody failed to inhibit the DNA polymerases of the murine leukemia virus, simian sarcoma-associated virus, avian myeloblastosis virus, or Escherichia coli. Conversely, the bovine leukemia virus enzyme was not inhibited by antibody against the reverse transcriptases of other C-type viruses. These findings agree with previous results showing that the major internal bovine leukemia virus protein lacks the known interspecies- and intraspecies-specific antigenic determinants indentified in the homologous proteins of other oncornaviruses.
