The organization of visual receptive fields or neurons in the cat colliculus superior.

The receptive field organization of neurons in the superior colliculus of the cat was investigated. Extracellular recordings from single units were made during the stimulation of their receptive fields by flashing light-spots and diffuse light illumination. According to the differences in their organizations receptive fields were classified as "homogeneous", if the response pattern to flashing spot was the same in every point of the receptive field; and "heterogeneous", if the pattern of response of the cell changed irregularly as a function of a change in the location of the flashing spot. Receptive fields were also classified according to the latency distribution throughout the receptive field. The latency of the "on" response evoked by a flashing light-spot was measured. Two types of receptive fields were observed: homolatent, if there were no significant differences in the latencies between neighboring points in the receptive field; and heterolatent, if the latencies of responses were irregularly distributed and significant differences in latencies between neighboring points existed. It is concluded that the receptive fields in the cat's colliculus superior have granular structure.

Columnar organization of visually driven neurons in the superior colliculus of the cat.

The majority of microelectrode penetrations showed regular vertical arrangement of visually driven neurons. In 10 percent of penetrations, direction sensitivity of neurons, the responses to diffuse light and moving stimuli end the position of receptive fields were practically identical. In 70 percent of penetrations, neurons were similar in one or two of these respects. It is concluded that the vertical organization of neurons may be an elementary unit of collicular function.

Structure of receptive fields of cat pulvinar neurons sensitive to photic stimulation.

Receptive fields of 262 pulvinar neurons were studied. Receptive fields of 142 of these neurons were studied in detail with the aid of a stationary spot of light, flashing in different parts of the receptive field. Depending on responses to presentation of the stationary stimulus the neurons were divided into six groups. The first group included neurons with on-off responses to photic stimulation (44 of 142), the second group neurons with off responses only (42 of 142). In cells of the third group (19 of 142) an on response only was recorded in all structures of the receptive field tested. Neurons of the fourth group (eight of 412) had a receptive field of similar structure to that of the simple receptive fields of neurons in cortical area 17. The fifth group (10 of 142) included neurons with a receptive field of concentric structure, the sixth (19 of 142) consisted of neurons with receptive fields with multiple discharge centers. The structure of the receptive field of these neurons was mosaic, with an irregular distribution of exciting and "silent" zones. The mean responses latency of the pulvinar neurons was 40-70 msec. Responses of neurons with shorter (20 msec) and longer (130-160 msec) latent periods also were recorded.
