Status of the vestibular analyzer and psychophysiologic parameters were studied in 20 miners with the long length of service and in 16 liquidators of Chernobyl atomic power station accident consequences. Liquidators showed the reliably increased latent periods of P1, N1 and P2 spikes of vestibular evoked potentials, considerably increased latent time of the complicated oculomotor reaction and lowered rate of information processing. Exposure to increased radiation dose during the work at Chernobyl atomic power station was a main factor to influence on the functional status of vestibular analyzer.

Depolarization accompanied by an increase in the membrane conductance produced by atropine was studied in frog sympathetic ganglion neurons after activation of the receptors with different cholinomimetics. Atropine perfusion caused excitatory effects if perfusion with acetylcholine or with a mixture of suberildicholine and 5-methylfurmethide has been performed beforehand, i.e. an activation of both nicotinic and muscarinic receptors has taken place. After preceeding activation of nicotinic receptor with suberildicholine or muscarinic receptor with 5-methylfurmethide atropine caused no changes in electric properties of the membrane. It is supposed that atropine, acting on receptors changed after the action of agonists, can evoke their activation.
The effect of the perfusion with cholinomimetics and cholinolytics on the membrane potential and membrane conduction of the isolated frog sympathetic ganglion neurons was studied using the intracellular microelectrodes. The activation of nicotinic cholinoreceptors with carbachol, suberildicholine and tetramethylammonium evoked depolarization with an increase in membrane conduction. The activation of muscarinic receptors with carbachol and 5-methylfurmethide evoked depolarization accompanied with a decrease or less frequently with an increase in the membrane conduction. It is found that atropine caused no changes in the membrane electric parameters when used as the perfused first drug, but it caused a short-lasting depolarization with the membrane conduction increase when used after carbachol.
The effect of dithiotreitol (disulfide bonds reducing agent) and potassium ferricyanide (oxidative agent) on the nicotinic and muscarinic receptors of frog's sympathetic ganglion neurons were studied using intracellular electrodes. Dithiotreitol inhibited the responses evoked by carbachol, suberildicholine and 5-methylfurmethide. Ferricyanide if applied after dithiotreitol increased the inhibited responses to suberildicholine and decreased those to 5-methylfurmethide. Using protectors it was shown that both acetylcholine and tetramethylammonium protected nicotinic and muscarinic receptors from the action of dithiotreitol, the acetylcholine was more effective than tetramethylammonium in the case of nicotinic receptor. It was suggested that there are disulfide bonds in the active centres of nicotinic and muscarinic receptors located in the anionic centres as well as outside of those centres.
Among varieties of migraine characteristic of liquidators of effects of the Chernobyl catastrophy and ChNPP personnel migraine with a manifest vestibular component holds a prominent place. As many as 803 middle-aged patients, average age (39.6 +/- 11.8) years, were examined. Among these were the ChNPP personnel, liquidators, and migrators from Pripyat, who had received low doses of radiation to 0.5 rem. Used in the examination were questionnaire survey (HOACK), vestibular tests (Uemura, Fukuda, etc.), nistagmography, cardiography with Takagasi loading tests, multisensory evoked potentials. Virtually all examinees demonstrated disturbances in the vestibular function. Of these, 92.4 percent of subjects had headache complaints. In 35 percent of the examinees, pain was of a typical migranous character. Additional signs included asthenization, vegetative symptomatology, vestibulocardial syndrome, emotional derangements. The histamine blocking agents dimenhydrinate and betaserk proved to be the most effective treatment options in the above patient population.

Forty-seven healthy test subjects were exposed several times each to linear acceleration of varying value. Depending on the acceleration value, they reported subjectively three types of sensations at the threshold level: nondiscriminated in terms of direction (P1, a = 8.0 +/- 2.5 cm/sec2), inverted (P2, a = 12.4 +/- 2.5 cm/sec2) and discriminated (P3, a = 16.1 +/- 3.5 cm/sec2). The acceleration value at which P2 was recorded caused most typical responses in different test subjects whereas that at which P3 was recorded induced greatest individual variations. Evoked potentials in response to linear acceleration were recorded in such a manner which excluded potential instrumental artefacts or possible contribution of eye movements, excitation of the hearing organ and muscle tone changes. The data obtained indicate that acceleration-induced evoked potentials are predominantly of vestibular origin and consist of three peaks, viz. P1, N1, and P2, the latencies of which are equal to 31.3 +/- 7.2, 69.1 +/- 9.1 and 157.6 +/- 10.5 msec at the threshold where they emerge. The peak P1 is most variable, the peak N1 is most stable and the peak P2 is characterized by the largest ratio of the interindividual variation to the individual variation.
