[The image of the public health office in the public consciousness of a small city].

130 inhabitants of a small town (12,500 inhabitants) in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, were asked by health office employees about their opinion on the public health office and their knowledge of its tasks. The results of the poll show that there is some knowledge regarding the tasks of the public health office in the population; however, this knowledge is confined to a few points. As a result of the poll, the population has a neutral or rather positive point of view of the public health office. An intensification of the public relations several scopes of duties e.g. the scope of the pollution control, seems necessary to achieve the proper position in the image of the population.

[Anterior decompression and spinal stabilization in the treatment of dorsolumbar metastatic compression].

The authors report their experience of the postero-lateral approach for the treatment of thoraco-lumbar spinal metastasis with anterior decompression and osteosynthesis. They stress the progress in the surgical technique which is designed to have a direct effect on osseous posterior wall compression with a more effective osteosynthesis to allow an immediate mobilization.

[20 years of subcapital osteotomy of slipped upper femoral epiphysis. Indications and results].

Between 1945 and 1985, 570 patients with a slipped upper femoral epiphysis were treated at our hospital. During the last two decades a subcapital osteotomy was performed if the degree of slip exceeded 50 degrees. Twenty two such operations were carried out in 21 patients. In five hips complete avascular necrosis of the epiphysis occurred, and in another hip there was partial necrosis. The success of the operation depends upon careful preoperative planning and a meticulous surgical technique.

Usefulness of Cotrel Dubousset's universal instrumentation in dorsolumbar pathology. Preliminary report.

The authors report about the use of Cotrel and Dubousset osteosynthesis, which had been designed for operative treatment of spinal deformations, for other dorso-lumbar pathology in 15 of their own patients with due to trauma or tumour instable lesions. They underline its advantages in application to trauma or tumour cases.

[Decrease of mitogen stimulation of lymphocytes in rheumatoid arthritis].

Peripheral blood lymphocytes of 51 patients with rheumatoid arthritis and of 14 healthy blood donors were cultivated in autologous and homologous normal pool-serum and stimulated with phytohemagglutinin (PHA-P), concanavalin A (Con A) and pokeweed mitogen (PMW) in different doses. In autologous as well as in homologous pool-serum the 3H-thymidine uptake of stimulated lymphocytes from patients with rheumatoid arthritis was significantly depressed independent of the mitogen concentration used. Serum from patients with rheumatoid arthritis depressed the activation of blood donor lymphocytes by Con A and PWM. The depression of lymphocyte activation was not related to the presence of rheumatoid factors in the serum, the severity of the disease and the anti-rheumatic therapy.
