[McKusick-Kaufman syndrome as a cause of acute abdomen in the neonatal period].

The McKusick-Kaufman-syndrome, also known by the name of hydrometrocolpos-hexadactyly syndrome, is an autosomal-recessive hereditary disease or spontaneous malformation. A hydrometrocolpos is formed in the process by a transversal vaginal septum and subsequently acts like an abdominal tumour to compress the iliac veins and to result in supravesical obstruction, eventually causing a condition of ileus and respiratory problems. Transvaginal drainage is used as primary therapy.

[Experiences in small intestine intubation in pediatric surgery].

An account is given in this paper of intestinal intubation, the most promising approach at present to postoperative ileus. Reference is made to causes and to preventive methods used in the past. Classical techniques and their variants are described, with peculiarities being mentioned together with possible complications. Positive results have enlarged the list of intraabdominal diseases in which cases intubation should be justified. Fifteen children died out of 55 with intestinal intubation. However, those deaths could not be attributed to intubation, since no ileus was recordable on post-mortem from any of these cases. They were rather attribute to pre-existence of general damage or to postoperative complications which had unfavourable effects primarily on prematurely born children, newborns, and infants up to one month of age. Hence, intestinal intubation may be considered to be the most effective and least risky approach to the control of mechanical or combined paralytico-mechanical ileus.

[Therapy of pediatric anorectal prolapse].

No generally valid and accepted views, applicable to all severities, have so far existed regarding aetiopathogenesis and therapeutic strategies for surgical approach to anorectal prolapse in childhood. More ground has been assumed in recent years by sclerosing therapy. The injections therapy has proved to be highly suitable for severity stages One and Two and for Type I according to Reifferscheid and Altemeier. It should be used before more invasive surgical interventions are decided. This conclusion has been drawn by the authors of this paper from their own therapeutic results obtained from 37 cases of anorectal prolapse in childhood, with therapeutic sclerosing being used in 23 instances.

[Experiences with the intramedullary open Rush-pin fixation of femur shaft fractures in children].

This is a report of 47 followed-up children in whom open intramedullary splinting of the medullary space was effected because of fracture of the shaft of the femur, using the rush-pinning technique developed by the authors. In 33 children, a slight increase of longitudinal growth was seen, which amounted to 2-20 mm. The average longitudinal extension was 9.4 mm. In 10 children, there was a shortening amounting to 1-15 mm, the average being 4.6 mm. The change in length was independent of age, localisation of the fracture, and length of time during which the pin remained in position. The effect that a slight change in valgus positioning was seen in 7 children, whereas slight turning of the hip into varus occurred in 9 children only, points to a merely slight irritation of the trochanter metaphysis.

[Neural control of saliva secretion. Review of questions on special neurosecretory functions of the facial nerve].

Fifty years ago, anatomists and physiologists still held the opinion that the N. facialis had a purely motor fuction without any sensory or secretory components. With respect to the previously only occasionally mentioned possibility of an additional neurosecretory function of the N. facialis, clinical and experimental, especially neurophysiological research and experiences of the last five decades have however led to results which are being discussed under particular consideration of the neural control of salivary secretion. In this connection, side-functions are discussed that are just appearing in outlines and have not yet been fully cleared up, for example questions regarding an internal secretion of certain parts of the facial nerve, especially related to the patotid gland. In connection with this question, the author considered it necessary to refer to some medical-historical findings of earlier times.

[False diagnosis of acute appendicitis: visceral larva migrans syndrome].

A 8 years old girl suffering from the Larva-migrans-Syndrome (Ascariasis) was operated on the false diagnosis of acute appendicitis. The cardinal symptoms of this disease are chronic eosinophilia, hepatomegaly, affection of the lungs, vague abdominal symptoms, in this case simulating acute appendicitis. Diagnostics, therapy, prognosis and prophylaxis are dealt with in detail.
