Urothelial dysplasia in random mucosal biopsies from patients with bladder tumours.

A prospective study of the incidence of urothelial dysplasia in random mucosal biopsies from cystoscopically normal appearing mucosa was carried out in 90 patients with bladder tumours at the initial diagnosis. More than 50% of invasive bladder tumours were accompanied by wide-spread urothelial dysplasia, in half of these cases characterized as carcinoma in situ supporting the idea that bladder cancer is a diffuse urothelial disease. Although suggesting an early radical treatment of invasive bladder cancer, such action should not be taken before a careful follow-up study of these patients have provided information on the natural history of diffuse urothelial dysplasia associated with bladder tumours.

Dentition on Bahrain, 2000 B.C.

Teeth and jaws excavated from 25 burial mounds on the island of Bahrain were examined. Dating: 2000 B.C. The number of individuals buried was estimated from the dentition. An approximate determination of the age for death was attempted. Non-metric and metric traits of the teeth were observed. The teeth showed Caucasoid but no Mongoloid traits. They were small, worn at an early age, with a great deal of carious lesions, no multiple fractures, only a little calculus and alveoloclasia but frequent enamel hypoplasia. The mandibles showed fine healing after the widespread antemortem loss of molars, possibly extracted due to the consequence of caries, caused by the consumption of many carbohydrates.

The diagnostic value of cytochemical staining for non-specific esterase in the search for cancer cells in effusions.

143 consecutive effusion samples were stained for non-specific esterase (NSE) in order to test the diagnostic value of the staining method with reference to the diagnosis of carcinosis in pleural and peritoneal cavities. On comparing the results obtained by cytomorphological evaluation and NSE staining the former was proved to have a signficnat higher diagnostic specificity. The diagnostic sensitivity of the two methods showed no difference. The low diagnostic specificity of the NSE staining was due to occasionally intense staining of macrophages and mesothelial cells in connection with reactive states of the mesothelium. The NSE staining is not recommendable as a diagnostic supplement to the cytomorphological evaluation.

Penicillamine-induced polymyositis-dermatomyositis.

Two patients with classical rheumatoid arthritis developed myopathy during treatment with penicillamine. In both patients, electromyography and muscle biopsies were indicative of polymyositis. In one patient, muscle enzymes were not examined at the appropriate time; in the other patient muscle enzymes were raised. This latter patient also had a rash and, in the dermal epidermal junction of pathological skin, granular deposits of immunoglobulin and complement were found. The myopathy subsided in both patients after withdrawal of penicillamine.

Transthoracic aspiration biopsy. A study on diagnostic reproducibility.

Based on a randomized material of 100 histologically verified transthoracic aspiration biopsies an inter- and intraobserver variation study was carried out by the two investigators. The results showed a high degree of diagnostic reproducibility pointing towards the value of the aspiration biopsy per se. It is concluded that this diagnostic method is reliable in the hands of the expert and useful even in the hands of a pathologist only given a short introduction to--and a reasonable amount of correction within--this special field.
