How does a figure appear and disappear in visual perception?

9 simple outline figures served as stimuli. Each figure was for 60 msec. projected onto a screen 2 m. from the subject. 1 to 5 fixation areas were chosen for the figures; they were unmarked. After training all subjects reported experience of movement, i.e., fixating a given figure at a given fixation area, subjects reported experiencing the figure as lengthening/expanding from the fixation area to full size and immediately thereafter shortening/contracting to the fixation area. Subjects only saw the figure at its full size for a very short movement. When the fixation area was changed for a figure, the experienced movement also changed, but the fully developed figure remained the same. The durations of subjects' experiened movements of the figures, and thereby the durations of subjects' perception of the figures, were measured in milliseconds. For a given subject the durations of perception of all 9 figures were the same. The durations are characteristic of each subject and have proved to remain constant after a period of 1 yr.

Extraordinary experiences during cross-modal perception.

9 Ss were requested to perceive simultaneously the taste of beer and a rhythmic sound, the pitch of which could be varied. The frequencies at which Ss experienced harmony between the taste and the sound were determined. At the pitch of harmony Ss reported characteristic experiences, e.g., optimum taste of the beer, rhythmic sensations in the head, and tickling sensations in the jaws and the mouth. 3 Ss also reported experiences resembling those described by persons under the influence of such drugs as mescaline, psilocybin, LSD, and cannabis.

Acoustic Stimulation↗

Duration of experienced expansion and contraction of a circle.

The stimulus was a white outline circle which for 60 msec. was projected onto a screen 2 m. from S. The diameter of the circle was 10 cm. and the circle line was approximately 1.5 mm. wide. Fixating the center of the circle Ss reported experiencing the circle as expanding from the point of fixation to full size and then contracting to the point of fixation. Ss' experiences fell in two classes. The durations of Ss' experience of expansion-contraction were measured in msec. Ss also participated in experiments in which they fixated the nethermost point of a 17-cm. vertical straight line which was 2 mm. wide. Ss experienced the line as lengthening from the point of fixation to full length and then shortening to the point of fixation. For a given S the duration of the experienced expansion-contraction of the circle and the experienced lengthening shortening of the straight line were the same.
