Preventive measures against rabies.
1. Rabies occurs worldwide, and is increasing in many developing countries as well as in Western Europe. 2. Corneal transplants from patients dying from undiagnosed CNSD have resulted in rabies. 3. Trials of an oral vaccine immunisation concealed in baits for wildlife are currently being tried in France. 4. Human diploid cell rabies (HDCV) is used for prophylactic and postexposure treatment.
Meningitis: causes, treatment and care.
1. About 10-25 per cent of the general population may be carriers of bacterial meningitis. 2. Rifampicin may be given to close contacts of the patient and on discharge. 3. Counselling the patient and family on complications after meningitis is essential. 4. Education on meningitis for nurses could be improved to enable them to act effectively in the community.

Recent legislation requires that employers ensure employees are protected from high noise levels in the workplace. 1. Rapid repetitive movements in connection with machine-pacing can lead to the development of upper limb disorders and repetitive strain injuries. 2. The main treatment of these disorders is rest and physiotherapy. 3. Operating VDUs is not a high risk occupation, but can lead to work-related upper limb disorders. 4. Occupational health nurses have a major part to play in preventing repetitive strain injuries in industry.
A safe way to reduce the symptoms? Advising women on hormone replacement therapy.
Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) counters the symptoms associated with the menopause, and can improve quality of life. As with any form of treatment, HRT has both advantages and disadvantages, and women must be told about these so they can make an informed choice.
