Towards benchmark second-order correlation energies for large atoms. II. Angular extrapolation problems.

We have studied the use of the asymptotic expansions (AEs) for the angular momentum extrapolation (to l --> infinity) of atomic second-order Moller-Plesset (MP2) correlation energies of symmetry-adapted pairs (SAPs). The AEs have been defined in terms of partial wave (PW) increments to the SAP correlation energies obtained with the finite element MP2 method (FEM-MP2), as well as with the variational perturbation method in a Slater-type orbital basis. The method employed to obtain AEs from PW increments is general in the sense that it can be applied to methods other than MP2 and, if modified, to molecular systems. Optimal AEs have been determined for all types of SAPs possible in large atoms using very accurate FEM PW increments up to lmax = 45. The impact of the error of the PW increments on the coefficients of the AEs is computed and taken into account in our procedure. The first AE coefficient is determined to a very high accuracy, whereas the second involves much larger errors. The optimum l values (lopt) for starting the extrapolation procedures are determined and their properties, interesting from the practical point of view, are discussed. It is found that the values of the first AE coefficients obey expressions of the type derived by Kutzelnigg and Morgan [J. Chem. Phys. 96, 4484 (1992); 97, 8821(E) (1992)] for He-type systems in the bare-nucleus case provided they are modified by fractional factors in the case of triplet and unnatural singlet SAPs. These expressions give extremely accurate values for the first AE coefficient both for the STO and the FEM Hartree-Fock orbitals. We have compared the performance of our angular momentum extrapolations with those of some of the principal expansion extrapolations performed with correlation consistent basis sets employed in the literature and indicated the main sources of inaccuracy.

A positive outcome in patient with massive acute pulmonary embolism and right atrial mobile thrombus fragmented during thrombolysis: a serial echocardiographic examination.

The case report presents a patient with acute, massive pulmonary embolism diagnosed by transthoracic echocardiography, with the mobile thrombus visualized in the right atrium. During the thrombolytic therapy the thrombus was fragmented and migrated to the pulmonary artery, with a rapid transient worsening of the clinical status of the patient. The continuation of thrombolysis led to the gradual improvement of the patient condition. In this case report the importance of serial echocardiographic examinations in revealing right heart masses, the right ventricle overloading and the effectiveness of treatment is shown.

Towards benchmark second-order correlation energies for large atoms: Zn2+ revisited.

To provide very accurate reference results for the second-order Møller-Plesset (MP2) energy and its various components for Zn(2+), which plays for 3d-electron systems a similar role as Ne for smaller atoms and molecules, we have performed extensive calculation by two completely different implementations of the MP2 method: the finite element method (FEM) and the variation-perturbation (VP) method. The FEM and VP calculations yield partial wave contributions up to l(max)=45 and 12, respectively. Detailed comparison of all FEM and VP energy components for l(max)=12 has disclosed an extraordinary similarity, which justifies using the present results as benchmarks. The present correlation energies are compared with other works. The dependability of an earlier version of FEM, already applied to very large closed-shell atoms, is confirmed. It has been found that for larger atoms the accuracy of the analytical Hartree-Fock results has an impact on the accuracy of the MP2 energies greater than for smaller atoms. Fields of applications of the present results in studies of various electron correlation effects in 3d-electron atoms and molecules are indicated.

Antibiotic susceptibility of bacterial strains isolated from urinary tract infections in Poland.

Worldwide data show that there is increasing resistance among urinary tract pathogens to conventional drugs. The aim of this study was to obtain data on susceptibility patterns of pathogens responsible for urinary tract infections (UTIs) in Poland to currently used antimicrobial agents. A multicentre study of 141 pathogens from hospital-acquired infections and 460 pathogens from community-acquired infections was carried out between July 1998 and May 1999. The most prevalent aetiological agent was Escherichia coli (73.0%), followed by Proteus spp. (8.9%) and other species of Enterobacteriaceae (9.6%). Few community infections were caused by Gram-positive bacteria (2.2%). Gram-positive cocci were isolated more frequently from a hospital setting (14.1%) and the most common were Enterococcus spp. (8.5%). Pseudomonas aeruginosa was found only among hospital isolates and was responsible for 10.7% of infections. E. coli isolates from both community and hospital infections were highly susceptible to many antimicrobial agents with the exception of those isolates producing extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs). Of all Enterobacteriaceae tested, 38 strains (6.9%) were capable of producing ESBLs.

2D NMR analysis of highly restricted internal rotation in 2-methylthio-3H-4-p-bromophenyl)-7-[(ortho- and para-substituted)-phenylthio]-1, 5-benzodiazepines.

The complete assignments of twelve 4-aryl-7-thioaryl-1,5-benzodiazepines 1H and 13C spectra, performed with the use of high resolution variable solvent and temperature 1D and 2D techniques (e.g. HOMOCOSY, NOESY, HMQC and HMBC), lead to the determination of conformational equilibria between two rotamers having the aromatic ring of the thioaryl oriented in a perpendicular or helical orientation toward the benzodiazepine ring. The restricted rotation was evaluated from the population of these conformers.

Experimental pancreatitis induced by synthetic prooxidant tert-butyl hydroperoxide.

The purpose of this study was to verify whether injection of tert-butyl hydroperoxide (Bu(t)OOH, a well-known prooxidant agent) into the bile-pancreatic duct can induce acute pancreatitis. A rapid blockade of the secretion was observed in the majority of the animals after 3 hours of observation. After 6 hours, the secretion reached a very low level, significantly different compared with controls. In groups of rats injected with Bu(t)OOH, pancreatic weight gain was observed compared with the rats injected with physiologic saline. Histology of pancreata removed 3 hours after injection of Bu(t)OOH showed acinar cell vacuolization, interstitial edema, focal necrosis of pancreatic acini, fat-tissue necrosis, and leukocyte infiltration of the organ. These changes were considerably greater after the 6-hour observation period. Electron-microscopic inspection revealed profound morphologic changes 3 hours after Bu(t)OOH injection. The control rats receiving physiologic saline alone had well-preserved pancreatic tissue structure. In conclusion, injection of the prooxidant agent, tert-butyl hydroperoxide, into common bile-pancreatic duct induces acute necrotizing pancreatitis, which indicates the crucial role of free radical reactions in pathogenesis of this disease.

Quinolinic aminoxyl protects albumin against peroxyl radical mediated damage.

A study of peroxyl radical-mediated bovine serum albumin oxidation in the presence of the quinolinic aminoxyl 1,2-dihydro-2,2-diphenyl-4-ethoxy-quinoline-1-oxyl (QAO) was carried out in order to test its efficiency as a protein antioxidant. Albumin oxidation was induced by the tert-butylhydroperoxide/PbO2 system. The extent of protein oxidation, measured by monitoring the formation of carbonyl groups, was considerably reduced in the presence of QAO. ESR measurements were carried out to confirm the consumption of the nitroxide during oxidation and its incorporation in the protein. The data obtained indicate that the quinolinic aminoxyl function can be used as an effective antioxidant in biological systems.

[Spleen rupture and ischemic cerebral stroke in a patient with recent myocardial infarction].

A case is presented of recent anterior myocardial infarction in 40-year-old man, treated in acute stage with streptokinase and heparin, complicated by spleen rupture and splenectomy on the 6th day of infarction and by ischemic cerebral stroke on the 15th day. After 10-weeks of therapy patient left the hospital in good clinical condition, which continued 6 months of out-patient follow-up. Results of our examinations excluded haematologic proliferative diseases as a cause of spleen rupture. Fever and recurring pains in the left hypochondrium occurring before infarction suggested possibility of infectious diseases with spleen involvement. In histopathological examination the spleen swelling (as a reaction on an infection) was found. The influence of fibrinolytic and anticoagulant therapy on spleen rupture was discussed. In pathogenesis of ischemic stroke, the thrombocythemia observed after splenectomy and platelet hyperactivity following thrombolytic therapy were taken into consideration.

Modeling RNA secondary structures. I. Mathematical structural model for predicting RNA secondary structures.

A mathematical model for analyzing the secondary structures of RNA is developed that is based on the connection matrix associated with the planar p-h graph. The classification of the elementary structures allows the introduction of the basis of structural space from which to build the global secondary structure. All admissible solutions belong to the configuration space and can be obtained directly from its basis.
