[Computerized tomography studies of age- and sex-related physiological variations of intracranial structures].

This paper supplies proof of the age dependence of the physiological cerebral density and ventricle size. The studies are based on the evaluation of normal cerebral computer tomograms of a total of 1100 patients of both sexes. Mathematical statistical calculations yield accurate data on the age-conditioned physiological "standard ranges" of cerebral density and ventricle width (3rd and 4th ventricle). By means of the graphic representations and calculation formulas it is possible to achieve rapid orientation provided the CT technique employed is the same. The results as communicated in this paper enable further quantification and objectivation of our CT data.

[Computerized tomography studies in the assessment of radiogenic pneumopathy in an animal experiment].

An animal experimental study was conducted in 56 piglets exposed to radiation to establish new assessment criteria on radiogenic pneumopathy by employing computed tomography for diagnosis. The accurately measurable density changes in the lung parenchyma exposed to radiation appear invariably as soon as a dose-dependent threshold value is exceeded. Tolerance limits can be determined for 60Co and neutron irradiation in different fractions and single doses, the enhancement of lung density being correlated with the irradiation dose. It is not possible to establish a volume-dependent decrease in the tolerance dose. Likewise, there is no radiation-promoted co-reaction of adjacent pulmonary tissue not subjected to irradiation exposure. These results apply to the experimental animals used in the study.

In vitro reconstitution of messenger ribonucleoprotein particles from globin messenger RNA and cytosol proteins.

Deproteinized globin poly(A) + mRNAs reassociate readily in vitro with soluble RNA-binding proteins of the cytosol; reconstituted messenger ribonucleoprotein complexes are obtained which are very similar to native globin polyribosomal-mRNP as far as bouyant density in Cs2SO4 and the composition of proteins which can be crosslinked to the mRNA are concerned. Proteins thus identified bind specifically to mRNA and not to ribosomal RNA or any synthetic oligonucleotides, with one exception: a 78-kDa protein could be cross-linked to poly(A).

[Clinical and computed tomographic observations on newborn infants with generalized brain edema due to perinatal asphyxia].

We observed a sudden respiratory arrest in four term newborn infants after a clinically symptom-free period. There were no cardiac, pulmonary or metabolic changes responsible for these events. Signs of cerebral dysfunction existed (muscular hypotonia, jitterness, seizures). Cranial computerized tomographic scans were performed during the period of respirator treatment within the first week of life. The density of the brain structures was significantly decreased in all cases, three of the patients showed a complete compression of the lateral ventricles. These findings indicated severe brain swelling as a consequence of cerebral hypoxia. There was a history of umbilical cord occlusion in two cases. In the remaining patients we must assume an undetected hypoxic-ischemic episode prior to the onset of labor. We used hyperventilation, corticosteroids, phenobarbital, diuretics and fluid restriction for therapy. Later on the babies received special physiotherapy. Control CT-scans were performed during the fourth or fifth week of life. The findings were normal in one patient. Signs of mild focal brain atrophy developed in two babies. A more severe cortical atrophic lesion of both temporal lobes was found in one patient. He suffered from a slight cerebral palsy. No neurodevelopmental handicaps could be found in all the other patients on long term follow-up. The EEG examination was performed between the fifth and seventh month of life. No pathologic changes were observed. We conclude that severe generalized brain edema in the newborn is not necessarily followed by extensive brain damage. We think it important to develop more sensitive methods for detecting a hypoxic ischemic crisis preceding the birth.

[Radiation exposure of the lens during CT of the orbital area].

The exposure of the lens to irradiation in CT examination of the orbita was determined in a total of 80 patients via thermoluminescence dosimetry. Depending on a wide variety of parameters, exposures between 6.5 and 75 mGy were found with a mean of 28 mGy. By analysing the influence values thickness of layer and mAs product, suggestions for optimising orbita CT examinations are evolved.

[Results of treatment in the hyperprolactinemic anovulatory syndrome].

This is a report about the results of Parlodel and neurosurgical treatment of 30 patients with infertility and amenorrhea, in 18 cases combined with galactorrhea. There were 4 cases of non-ovulatory cycles with or without oligomenorrhea. 2 young girls had a primary amenorrhea. All patients wanted to have children. A pituitary tumor was diagnosed in 15 patients, it was microsurgically removed in 7 cases. 18 of 30 patients became pregnant after a drug treatment or combined neurosurgical and drug therapy.

[Radiologic studies of the correlation between the mineral content of the peripheral and axial skeleton].

Estimations of mineral content of normal human skeletons using three radiological methods have led to the following conclusions: 1. Bone density of vertebral bodies increases from T.6 to L.5. Average values for thoracic and lumbar vertebrae are 0.71 and 0.88 g./cm2. 2. There is no linear correlation between the mineral content of an easily accessible peripheral bone and of the vertebrae. 3. The method for bone mineral estimation, using thulium170, which was developed in Dresden, can be used for the peripheral and central skeleton. 4. 125-photon absorption us useful for measurements on the peripheral skeleton, where it is the most elegant and accurate method. It is, however, useless for measurements of the central skeleton.

76-kDa poly(A)-protein is involved in the formation of 48 S initiation complexes.

In erythropoietic mouse cells induced by Friend leukemia virus, approximately 50% of non-polyribosomal globin mRNA is found in 48 S initiation complexes ready to be translated. EDTA releases 15 S globin mRNPs, homologous to polyribosomal globin mRNPs. The 76-kDa poly(A)-protein is one of its main protein components. The other 50% of non-polyribosomal message can be separated as 20 S 'free' mRNPs. Its protein composition is different, especially the 76-kDa protein is lacking. The role of this protein is discussed.

[Advances in angiographic diagnosis for the demonstration of acral vascular processes].

At present the clinician may include the arteriographical demonstration of the acral vascular processes exactly into his diagnostical scheme only then, when this yields reproducible clear results. With the application of Droperidol it has become possible to improve decisively the angiographical examination technique. The method is simple and without risk. Thus a decisive progress in the secure differentiation of acral vascular processes has been achieved. The use of the technique can be recommended in general. Acral vascular processes show a typical picture in the arteriogramme. Apart from the occlusions of the vessels, irregularities of the wall and collaterals characteristic patterns of the findings are observed with regard to the localisation of the occlusion. The differential diagnosis concerning the stage in Raynaud's disease is clear and secure. The close cooperation between clinician and radiologist remains a necessary prerequisite for an optimum investigation technique and an exact diagnosing.
