[The ultrastructure of accumulated mitochondria in injuries of demyelinated axons].

The authors ligated the nervus lienalis of the cat, and observed the subsequent accumulation of mitochondria in nonmyelinated axons in close vicinity proximal and distal to the ligature. In enlarged axons they found groups of mostly homogen population of mitochondria with specific morphologic signs. Concerning the mitochondrial ultrastructure authors arranged the mitochondria to three classes and five subclasses. The authors discuss the aim and function of mitochondrial accumulation in the injured nonmyelinated axon. Different directions of mitochondrial group's motion in axons was hypothetically assumed.

[History of knowledge about the structure of renal corpuscles and afferent arterioles].

Some morphological findings obtained during the more than 300-year history of research into the fine structure of the kidney are presented in chronological order (discovery of renal corpuscles and their relationship to kidney arteries, elucidation of topographic relationships between glomeruli and tubules, discovery of specialized structure of juxtaglomerular segments of afferent arterioles). Gradual insight into the structure of the kidney was accompanied by elucidation of its function. Historical knowledge and findings demonstrated on simple drawings were verified in the present study by sophisticated methods of imaging, including transmission and scanning electron microscopy. The correspondence of the old schemes representing renal corpuscles (Malpighi, Bowman) with the actual morphological picture was established.

Ultrastructural study of small granule containing (SGC) cells in the lower mesenteric ganglion in drug treated guinea-pigs.

Small granule containing cells (SGC or SIF cells) in the lower mesenteric ganglion of the guinea-pig were studied in control and experimental animals. After reserpine administration a decrease of dense population of granular vesicles was found. After injection of nialamide and dopamine to the animals in SGC cells significantly increased the number and density of granular vesicles. No real efferent synapses were found on SGC cell processes, although sites with accumulated synaptic-like vesicles, mostly with a dense core, were often observed.

Injured mitochondria in cells of Euglena gracilis after DNA gyrase inhibitors treatment.

Five quinolone (ofloxacin, cinoxacin, enoxacin, ciprofloxacin, oxolinic acid) and one non-quinolone (coumermycin A1) inhibitors of prokaryotic DNA gyrase used in clinical practice for treatment of bacterial infections were experimentally examinated. As model organism the flagellate Euglena gracilis was used. Ultrastructural changes in chloroplasts and mitochondria caused by inhibitors were quantitavely evaluated. Simultaneously in all cases injury and hereditary loss of chloroplasts (bleaching) were observed in the cells. In some samples about 45% of cup-shaped mitochondria cumulated in the cytoplasm. In damaged mitochondria some degenerative signs were seen, but after the last subcultivation on drug-free media the number of injured mitochondria in the bleached cells yielded to the normal value.

[The life and work of Professor Zdenĕk Frankenberger, the founder and first head of the Institute of Histology and Embryology at the School of Medicine of Comenius University in Bratislava].

The life and work of Prof. MUDr. Zdenek Frankenberger is presented with the main focus on the 16-year period of his activities in Slovakia. His contribution to the history of the Bratislava School of Medicine is great both with regard to his activities both as its founder and excellent teacher of generations of Slovak doctors. He was striving hard to establish the Institute of Histology and Embryology whose first head he became. He participated in the establishment and development also of other institutes of the School of Medicine. An analysis of his remarkable and voluminous scientific work displays the extent of his education, knowledge and interests. His studies covered a broad range of scientific problems in the field of histology, microscopic anatomy, embryology, comparative anatomy and anthropology. Yet he was engaged also in faunal studies and became a reknown expert in entomology. Prof. Frankenberger contributed considerably to the executive work of the Medical School and was its vice-dean and dean.

[The synovial membrane in chronic juvenile arthritis. Electron microscopy study and case report].

A case report of a patient with juvenile chronic arthritis who underwent early synovectomy of the knee joint is presented. The synovial membrane was examined by light and electron microscopy. The following signs of nonspecific inflammation were observed; lympho-plasmocytic infiltrate in the ground substance of the interstitial connective tissue, increased phagocytic activity of synovial lining cells and macrophages, and neutrophilic granulocytes. The inflammatory infiltrate is presumed to have damaged the finest part of the microcirculation--the ultracirculatory system of tissue channels. Complete remission was achieved and the function of the patient's knee joint is fully preserved.

[Vacuolated neurons in the superior cervical ganglion in rats after repeated stress].

In the article the authors deal with unsolved problem of the occurrence and character of vacuolated neurons (VN) in autonomic ganglia. They describe their own investigations of vacuolated neurons in the superior cervical ganglion of male rat (Wistar) after repeated stress and fixation of the tissue in glutaraldehyde/OsO4. Vacuolated neurons had a well-preserved structure of ganglion cell in spite of that in cytoplasma they contain vacuoles reaching enormous size. Vacuoles had very characteristic content. They were filled in by content of thin density. Along the membrane of the vacuole were cytoplasmatic extensions, their transverse profiles and isolated invaginations of the membrane of vacuole. From the structure of the vacuole cannot be appreciated the character of the vacuole--whether it is phagosomes or the reservoir of cell metabolite established for its function. Because the vacuolated neurons have the same structure as vacuolated neurons in autonomic pelvic ganglia of the rat, the authors in discussion dealt especially with the results of the investigation of the mentioned ganglia.

[Dr. Z. Frankenberg and the beginning of the 2d decade of history of the Medical School of Comenius University in Bratislava].

Professor MUDr. Z. Frankenberger, DrSc. was a distinguished personality of the Medical Faculty, Comenius University in Bratislava at the beginning of the second decade of its history (1930-1934). As dean of the Medical Faculty (1930-1931) or prodean (1931-1932) he had to resolve under complicated conditions of the general economic crisis many difficult problems of its further development and concept. Due to his vitality and youth he found time to participate also actively in social, cultural and professional activities, he helped students and assistants and greatly promoted the further development of the Medical Faculty of Comenius University in Bratislava.
