Preseismic electromagnetic signals in terms of complexity.

There is a recent thesis in the literature that an important organization of a physical system precedes a catastrophic event. In this context, one can search for signatures that imply the transition from a normal state to a main catastrophic event (e.g., earthquake). Experimental techniques are thus useful in corroborating theories from observed data. For example, recent results indicate that preseismic electromagnetic time series contain information characteristic of an ensuing earthquake event. Hereby, we attempt to demonstrate that an easily computable complexity measure, such as T-complexity or approximate entropy, gives evidence of state changes leading to the point of global instability. The appearance of a precatastrophic state is characterized by significant lower complexity in terms of T-complexity and approximate entropy. The present study confirms the conclusions of previous works based on an independent linear fractal spectral analysis. This convergence between nonlinear and linear analysis provides a more reliable detection concerning the emergence of the last phase of the earthquake preparation process. More precisely, we claim that our results suggest an important principle: significant complexity decrease and accession of persistency in electromagnetic (EM) time series can be confirmed at the tail of the preseismic EM emission, which could be used as diagnostic tools for the Earth's impending crust failure. Direct laboratory and field experimental data as well as theoretical arguments support the conclusions of the present analysis.

Dissipation in Laplacian fields across irregular boundaries.

The entropy production associated to a Laplacian field distributed across irregular boundaries is studied. In the context of the active zone approximation an explicit expression is given for the entropy production in terms of geometry, whose relation to the variational formulation is discussed. It is shown that the entropy production diminishes for successive prefractal generations of the same fractal generator, so that the final fractal object is expected to dissipate less than all previous ones. The relevance of this result in the abundance of fractal surfaces or interfaces observed in nature is discussed.

Tibolone in the treatment of psychosomatic symptoms in menopause.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the value of tibolone in the treatment of psychosomatic symptoms in menopause. Forty-two menopausal women (aged 46-63, mean 53.9) with nightly perspiration, vasomotor flushes, disturbance of libido, dyspnea and other psychosomatic symptoms were assigned to one of two treatment groups for three months: 1st group) 21 users of tibolone; 2nd group) 21 users of placebo. At the end of the trial disturbance of libido was observed in 4 (19.0%) cases tin the 1st group and 11 (52.4%) cases in the 2nd (p < 0.05) and nightly perspiration was observed in 3 cases (14.3%) in the 1st group and 9 cases (42.9%) in the 2nd (p < 0.05). Although vasomotor flushes were observed in only 3 (14.3%) cases in the 1st group and 7 cases (33.3%) in the 2nd group, this difference was not significant (p > 0.05). There was no significant effect of tibolone or placebo in dyspnea, vertigo and headache. From the results it can be concluded that tibolone can have a beneficial effect on some psychosomatic symptoms in postmenopausal women.
