[The smear method for histological diagnosis of the tumors of the central nervous system (author's transl)].

The smear method for rapid diagnosis of tumors of the central nervous system at operation is not popular in this country, although this has been widely used in North America and Europe since 1930s. During the period from 1958 to 1976 we experienced 1447 histologically verified tumors of the central nervous system. This smear preparation stained by eosin and methylene blue was made for rapid diagnosis in 718 cases of them. We reviewed these cases and described microscopical findings of various kinds of tumors. In over 90% of cases the correct diagnosis will be obtained from the smears. It can be said that the smear method is appropriate for intraoperative rapid diagnosis of neurosurgical cases.

An attempt to detect cell surface antigens in cultured human brain tumors by mixed hemadsorption test. First report.

The mixed hemadsorption test using rabbit anti-human glioma serum was applied to investigate cell surface antigens of nervous tissue tumors, non-nervous tissue tumors, epithelial and mesenchymal cells. Gliomas, neurinomas, and fetal brain cells exhibited a strongly positive reaction. Meningiomas, a metastatic brain tumor originated from the lung and HeLa cells exhibited a moderately positive reaction. No positive reaction was detected in human skin or dural fibroblasts, or in kidney cells even at a high concentration of rabbit anti-human glioma serum.

Radiosensitivity of meningioma--analysis of five cases of highly vascular meningioma treated by preoperative irradiation.

Preoperative 60Co-irradiation was given in five cases of highly vascular meningioma. Radiation doses ranged from 3,000 to 6,000 rads and were delivered over periods from 17 to 45 days. In one case of tentorial meningioma preoperative irradiation produced a marked reduction in the size and the vascularity of the tumour, as seen on the angiograms, and of the hot area in the brain scan. Papilloedema and abducens palsy also improved. After irradiation the tumour was totally removed. Histopathologically the tumour was a meningioma resembling a haemangiopericytoma. Coagulation necrosis of the parenchyma of the tumour was prominent. In the other four cases (three of meningothelioma type and one of haemangioblastoma type) the preoperative irradiation caused little or no change in the angiograms or in the brain scans. A mild clinical improvement occurred in one case, but deterioration took place in other cases. It may be concluded that preoperative irradiation gives little or no beneficial effect on meningiomas other than those of certain types, such as those resembling haemangiopericytomas, or malignant meningiomas. The clinical and radiological differential diagnosis between the usual types of meningioma and those which are either malignant or resemble haemangiopericytomas is discussed.

A bleeding Meckel's diverticulum diagnosed by arteriography.

A case of Meckel's bleeding diverticulum diagnosed by emergent arteriography is presented. Arteriography revealed an extravasation of contrast medium into the distal ileum and an abnormal ileal artery which passed to the antimesenteric border of the ileum. The diverticulum was demonstrated by double contrast study of the small intestine. The merits of emergent arteriography and other examinations for diagnosing Meckel's diverticulum are discussed.

Colloid degeneration of the skin--a case report.

A patient with multiple nodules on the chin and scalp is presented. Histologically, the nodules were composed of amorphous materials which also completely filled up the whole dermis. Histochemical observation indicated that the amorphous material in the nodule was a kind of glycoprotein. Electron microscopic examination revealed that the material consists of short wavy fibrils, 60 to 100 A in diameter, and of a low electron-dense amorphous substance. Biochemical examination supported the view that the amorphous material is so-called sialomucoid. The nodules were finally diagnosed as colloid degeneration of the skin (nodular type).

The membrane properties of the smooth muscle cells of the rabbit main pulmonary artery.

1. The membrane potential of the smooth muscle cells of the rabbit main pulmonary artery amounts to -57 mV, the length constant of the tissue is 1.48 mm and the time constant of the membrane 182 msec. On the basis of the electrical properties of its membrane, this smooth muscle tissue is classified as a single-unit type. During outward current pulses, the membrane shows marked rectification and action potentials can never be generated.2. Tetraethylammonium (10 mM) and procaine (5 mM) depolarize the membrane and increase the membrane resistance. By studying the effect of both substances on the (42)K efflux, it could be concluded that they reduce the K-permeability of the membrane. They also suppress the rectification of the membrane and increase the length constant of the membrane. In the presence of TEA and procaine, a graded response of the membrane can be induced by outward current pulses, but overshoot potentials never occur.3. Noradrenaline, in concentrations between 2 x 10(-8) and 10(-7)M, evokes contraction without depolarizing the membrane. When the concentration is increased above 2 x 10(-7)M, noradrenaline depolarizes the membrane and reduces the membrane resistance. A study of the effect of noradrenaline on the K, Cl and Na fluxes has revealed that it increases the permeability of the membrane for these three ions.4. The tissue concentrations of Na and K are 80 and 38 m-mole/kg wet wt., respectively. The amount of Cl in the cellular compartment was measured by an extrapolation procedure and found to be 13 m-mole/kg wet wt. The extracellular space measured with [(14)C]sorbitol is 550 ml./kg wet wt. and the dry wt./wet wt. ratio 19%. The calculated equilibrium potentials for K, Na and Cl (E(K), E(Na) and E(Cl)) are -83, +59 and -26 mV, respectively. In efflux experiments under steady-state conditions, the following rate constants have been calculated: 0.092 min(-1) for Na, 0.029 min(-1) for Cl and 0.0054 min(-1) for K. The calculated value for the ratio P(Na)/P(K) was 0.22 and for P(Cl)/P(K) 0.63.5. K-free solution and 2 x 10(-6)M ouabain depolarize the cells by about 8 mV. After exposure of the cells to K-free solution, they hyperpolarize on readmission of K, suggesting that part of the membrane potential could be due to electrogenic transport of ions.6. A decrease of external Ca depolarizes the cells and increases the membrane resistance. Na-deficiency hyperpolarizes these smooth muscle cells but this procedure does not prevent the depolarization induced by Ca deficiency.
