Consumption of food products by the elderly living in different environments of the Warsaw region, Poland.

The aim of the study was to compare qualitatively the intake of food groups by the elderly living in urban and rural areas, with regard to the place of living and sex. Fifty-sex subjects in Warsaw and 142 in villages (born in 1919-24) participated in the study. A 3-day record method was used to collect nutritional data. The subjects living in Warsaw consumed more often milk, meat, fish, fruit and their products, as well as fats and oils. Less than 50% of the elderly living in either rural or urban areas ate eggs and fish. Consumption of fruit and its products was also low in the villages (47%). Meat and meat products were consumed more often by elderly men, whereas milk, fruit and their products were eaten more often by women (a rural area only). Consumption of specific food items also differed between the two analyzed living areas; milk, yoghurt and cheese were eaten more often by the residents of Warsaw, however, the intake of cream was significantly higher in the villages. The intake of red meat and meat products was similar, but poultry was included into the diet of 24% of the elderly in the rural area, significantly less than in Warsaw (34%). It also appeared that butter and mixed fats were more common among the elderly in Warsaw, whereas lard, pork fat and margarine were more popular in the villages. Food choice in the rural area was of poorer quality.

Training in psychiatry: an examination of trainee perceptions. Part 1.

OBJECTIVE: To look at the perceptions of New South Wales (NSW) psychiatric trainees in relation to their training experiences and the role and quality of the consultant-registrar relationship. METHODS: A self-report questionnaire was developed to probe trainee perceptions of the consultant-trainee relationship in all those who had completed at least 1 year of training in psychiatry (n = 138) in NSW, as well as all consultants who had completed their training in the last 5 years (n = 95). Test-retest reliability was assessed at 3 months for each of the subscales (r = 0.70-0.89) and found to be acceptable. Validity issues are discussed. RESULTS: The results are discussed with special reference to the perceived competence, availability, breadth of knowledge and willingness to accept responsibilities of the supervising consultant. Consultant competence as a clinician was consistently rated as more important than being emotionally supportive. CONCLUSION: In addressing these issues, we aim to increase the degree of self-consciousness and reflectiveness of the profession of psychiatry within the Australian context. If there is to be a substantial shift for the better in trainees' perceptions of consultants, it is likely that the general consultant experience will have to be improved rather than providing small amounts of exposure to high quality consultants.

Adverse experiences in psychiatric training. Part 2.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the perceptions of New South Wales (NSW) psychiatric trainees in relation to their training, the adverse events they experienced and the role and quality of the consultant-registrar relationship. METHOD: A self-report questionnaire was developed to probe trainee perceptions of the consultant-trainee relationship and adverse events during training in all those who had completed at least 1 year of training in psychiatry (n = 138) in NSW, as well as all consultants who had completed their training in the last 5 years (n = 95). All subjects were asked to rate the frequency and relative impact of 20 adverse experiences with the opportunity to proffer adversities not listed. They were also asked to rate their experience of their consultants in relation to the adversity. RESULTS: The results from The Training Impact Study exploring adverse events experienced by NSW trainees are presented. Assault by a patient and suicide of a patient are identified as the most stressfull adversities of training in psychiatry. However, more general concerns such as educational and emotional neglect by supervisors, observing consultant maltreatment of patients, exam failure and conflict between consultants were also identified and discussed. CONCLUSIONS: The high response rate of both trainees and consultants gives these results a level of representative validity. Recommendations in relation to future training and research are put forward. Specific training in the management of potentially assaultive patients and facilitating trainee recovery from assault or threat of assault should be a priority of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists. Support and education in relation to patient suicide is also important. Training and recognition of teachers within the College should be encouraged.

Serum protein-bound carbohydrates in aging men and women.

Carbohydrate components of serum glycoproteins were analysed in 162 men and 48 women of various age groups. All components studied, namely amino-sugars, hexoses and neuraminic acid increased with age in men. In women only the hexoses level increased with age while the contents of amino-sugars and of neuraminic acid decreased with age, especially after the age of 30. The statistical analysis showed that women had a higher content of hexoses and a lower one of neuraminic acid than the men of the same age groups. The amino-sugar content was higher in women up to 30 years and lower in older women in comparison to men. It is assumed that these changes are due to changes in the steroid hormones with age.

Study of surface polysaccharides in non-enzymatically isolated cells.

The avoid the effect of enzymes on the cell surface during the isolation procedure, in the present work isolation of cells from solid tissues by means of a chelating agent was attempted. Cell coat of hepatocytes and thymocytes was stained with ruthenium red and examined with the electron microscope. Adequacy of the isolation methods employed for studies of cell surface glycoproteins was tested by treating with trypsin. Reaggregation of isolated hepatocytes was performed too. The above results allow the suggestion that the use of EDTA for isolation of liver cells is suitable for the study of surface material of cells.

Comparison of the surface glycoprotein components in the isolated cells of hamster melanotic and amelanotic melanomas.

A suspension of melanoma cells isolated non-enzymatically from tumors (melanotic and amelanotic) of transplantable melanoma in Syrian hamster was treated with trypsin to obtain surface material. In the material released from the cell surface contents of protein, aminosugars, fucose, sialic acids and hexoses were determined. Differences in the composition of the surface material derived from two kinds of melanoma were observed. The differences in the surface glycoprotein composition seem to be related to biological properties of both melanomas.

Ultrastructure of acinar cells of submaxillary gland after treatment with ACTH and cortisone.

The applied hormones cause changes in the ultrastructure of acinar cells, and the changes caused by each of them are different. The effect of ACTH on these cells is more distinct and the nature of the changes permits the suggestion that ACTH acts mainly on secretory activity (increase). The changes caused by treatment with cortisone cannot be interpreted unequivocally.

The effect of ACTH and cortisone on the carbohydrate-protein complexes of different types of epithelium in relation to their embryological origin.

Using histochemical methods the authors studied the effect of ACTH and cortisone on carbohydrate-protein complexes of epithelial cells derived from 3 different germ layers. It has been shown that cortisone increased the intensity of PAS reaction in all types of the epithelium investigated. Changes in acid mucosubstances after treatment with cortisone were different. After the administration of ACTH the observed changes in epithelium were not parallel to the changes seen after treatment with cortisone.

The effect of ACTH and cortisone on basement membrane in relation to the embryological origin of the epithelium.

The changes of intensity of PAS reaction in basement membranes of epithelial cells derived from 3 different germ layers in rats after treatment with ACTH and cortisone were observed. After treatment with cortisone an increase of PAS reaction in all investigated basement membranes was observed. Influence of cortisone on all basement membranes was independent of the embryological origin. The results after treatment with ACTH were not uniform.
