[Our experience of carcinoma of the larynx in Togo].

This is a retrospective study of 33 patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx from the end ward at Tokoin Teaching Hospital in Lomé. This series is from 1981 and 1995 (1 T1, 6 T2, 15 T3, 11 T4). This is an uncommon cancer. No etiological factors were identified. The high proportion requiring emergency tracheotomy (36.36%) and of T3-T4 cases (78.78%) are explained by the long delay before the first medical visit. Only 13 patients (36.36%) had a total laryngectomy. The prognosis was unfavourable.

[Cutaneous cancers in Togo].

A retrospective study was conducted during 20 years to determine the epidemiological features of skin cancer diagnosed in the pathology laboratory in Lome teaching hospital. [Sinus mucoceles. Apropos of 5 cases].

Our retrospective study of 5 cases of sinus mucocele confirmed its rarity and occurrence at any age. This uncommon disease might be due to an association of inflammation, ostium closure and hypersecretion. The volume of the fronto-ethmoidal mucocele let us operate on patients either by orbito-superciliary route or through the frontal scalp. Functional endoscopic surgery, presently suggested for mucocele treatment, was not used because of our lack of experience in this surgical method.

[Melanoma in Togo. A retrospective study over 20 years].

INTRODUCTION: The malignant melanoma is a rare malignant tumour in black patients, but it is common in white patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Medical records were reviewed retrospectively during 20 years (1973-1992) to determine the epidemiological features of malignant melanoma in Togo. RESULTS: During this period 63 cases (31 males and 32 females) of malignant melanoma were histologically diagnosed; an average of 3.15 cases each year. The tumor takes place preferably on the feet 40 cases (63.49%), hands 15 cases (19.04%), legs and thigh 10 cases (15.87%). CONCLUSION: The results of this study confirm the particularity of malignant melanoma in black subjects: its rarity and the feet localizations.

[Congenital malaria: clinical, parasitological and histological considerations. Apropos of 200 observations collected at the Lomé University Teaching Hospital and Kpalimé Hospital].

An evaluation was conducted of the usefulness of clinical, parasitological and histological parameters for the diagnosis of neonatal pathology due to congenital malaria. Haematozoa detected were invariably Plasmodium falciparum. Their presence in the placenta was considered essential to confirm congenital infection, but needed always to be accompanied by a positive diagnose of the same species in the mother, villous vessels, umbilical cord and peripheral blood of the newborn child. None of these was sufficient diagnosis alone. The existence of congenital malaria as a sickness in its own right appears unlikely, however, the indirect effects of maternal malaria on the foetus suggest prophylactic and individualised treatment is desirable for pregnant women.
