A study of the occlusal plane orientation by intra-oral method (retromolar pad).

Reliability of the intra-oral method which orientates the occlusal plane to terminate at the upper level of the retromolar pad was studied. Thirty individuals all with natural teeth and 34 complete denture wearers participated in the study. Stone casts were mounted in the S.A.M. 2 articulator by a quick mount face bow transfer. The angle between the occlusal plane and the articulator horizontal plane was measured in both groups. The angle was 9.42 degrees +/- 4.1 degrees in dentate individuals and 8.53 degrees +/- 2.8 degrees in complete denture wearers. No statistically significant difference was found between the groups (t = 0.72, P > 0.05). Therefore, the method can be advocated for a wide clinical use, as it is a simple method and places the artificial occlusal plane very close to the position of the natural plane of occlusion.

[Effect of prosthesis cleansing agent on the prosthetic base fungi].

Candida albicans and other fungi are frequently found in subjects wearing prostheses, especially in prostheses with poor hygiene, i.e. with accumulations of food, plaques and calculi. The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy of Corega extradent relative to fungi adhering to the prosthetic base. Results of the study showed the prosthesis hygiene to be substantially related to inflammation of palatal mucosa. The mean number of fungi per sq.cm of prosthetic base was 64 x 10(5). The number of fungi was redetermined after a two-day treatment with Corega extradent, with unchanged other habits of the prosthesis wearing and cleansing. The number of fungi decreased in all study subjects, the mean value of individual differences being 2238 times. In prostheses with a great number of fungi and extremely poor hygiene, the effect of Corega extradent was poorer, indicating the need of additional mechanical cleansing with a brush.

[Effect of work on the body posture in dental team members].

Differences between two working process technologies during the working time of a DMD and his/her team were studied. The study sample consisted of 16 dental medicine teams from the Zagreb area. One half of the teams were working using the conditionally termed old technology (T I), and the other half employed the new technology (T II). The aim of the study was to assess the extent to which the new technology elicited beneficial health-related effects on the team as a whole and on the working process in particular, as compared to the old technology. In particular sections of the process of work, differences were statistically significant, as shown by the results tabularly presented. Comparison of the two study groups was also carried out. It appears noteworthy to mention that the new technology, and even this one used for comparison in this study, should be expected to contribute to better working process which, in turn, might at the same time be one of the guidelines for future studies in dental medicine ergonomics.

[Angle between occlusal plane and horizontal plane of articulators with quick mounting face bow].

Correct determination of the occlusal plane is important for estetic, phonetic and masticatory function of the denture. As many different criterias are used in clinical practice to determine the occlusal plane on the wax rims, the aim of this study was to find the angle between the occlusal plane and the horizontal plane in the articulators with the quick mounting face bow. The measurements were made on the casts of 30 eugnath individuals with at least 28 natural teeth, mounted in S.A.M. articulator through the transfer with the Quick mounting face bow, in the position of maximum intercuspation. Measurements were made with a precise caliper and were transferred to the calibrated paper. The angles were measured between the occlusal plane and the horizontal plane. The angle is 9.42 degrees +/- 4.1 degrees in the population of this country. This result can be helpful to determine the occlusal plane or to control if the occlusal plane, determined by the other methods is in the correct position in articulator.

[Design of bond cast bridges].

A technique of etching was employed in 50 patients for bridge retention. The Rexillium III (Jenevie Industries, Wallingford Co.) alloy and Comspan bond (L. D. Caulk Co., Milford Del.) were used. Therapeutic results obtained with adhesive (etched) bridges depend on a variety of factor: careful and accurate indication, precise work plan, minimal preparation of the supporting tooth, appropriate method of retention of the attachment metal portion, and the type of bond and of dental alloy. Clinical application of bond cast bridges has a quite good prognosis. A prolonged period of observation should provide more data on the behavior of such appliances in the oral cavity and allow us evaluations.
