[Time experience in the framework of Martha E. Rogers' conceptual model].

The aim of this study, which is a part of an international research project, is to explore the possible differences in time experience between different cultures. In this paper are some preliminary results reported. The Time Metaphor Test showed that healthy Finnish people, aged from 20 to 60 years experience time as timelessness, not dragging and not time racing. The respondents over 40 years experienced time more often as timelessness than did the younger age groups.

[Automated examination methods in ophthalmology].

Following logical step-by-step strategies, many ophthalmological examinations are based on relatively simple methods. Because of this modern computers are capable of monitoring many of these examinations and of measuring the data. The interpretation, however, must be done by an ophthalmologist who can then relate the results to the patient's vision.

[Monapterin and biopterin in degenerated retinas].

We measured the concentrations of biopterin, neopterin and monapterin in the neuroretina of humans and different rat strains and found a relatively high amount of oxidized monapterin in these tissues. The dystrophic retinae of RCS rats revealed an inverse ratio of biopterin-to-monapterin compared to LE rats. This ratio was altered in LE rats after exposure to strong light. These results suggest that changes in pterin metabolism may correlate with retinal dystrophy.

[The influence of anamorphotic image formation on the visual evoked cortical potential].

The correction of astigmatism by spectacle lenses involves anamorphotic image formations and produces distortion of retinal images, putting strain on the sensory part of fusion. These distortions were artificially produced by anamorphotic telescopes in a group of emmetropic volunteers. In binocular visually evoked cortical potential (VECP), a transient increase in amplitudes was recordable after application of the anamorphotic distortions. The removal of anamorphotic telescopes resulted in a distinct decrease in amplitude, followed by an overshoot increase before recompensation to pretest values occurred. The amplitude reactions observed are suggested as being an objective indicator of the cortical fusion mechanism.

Developing standards for instructions to patients with glaucoma.

This paper describes the development of nursing standards in the management of patients with glaucoma. A key aspect was the development of understanding by patients of their problems. A survey was conducted to assess the respondents knowledge about glaucoma after application of the standard. The results achieved by the survey are explored.

[Principles of modern determination of refraction].

Electronic data processing systems are being used increasingly to support traditional ophthalmological and optical examination methods. Although the accuracy of the instruments has not increased substantially as a result, measurements have become far easier to perform and examination times have been reduced. The patient is thus subjected to a minimum of stress. The time saved should be used, e.g., for a personal conversation with the patient.

[Pathogenic mechanism of contusio bulbi].

We examined experimentally the pathomechanism of ocular contusion and its damaging influence on the retina. Therefore, various jabbing instruments were used with which a definite trauma can be obtained. The physical parameters, the localization of the trauma and their importance for the injury and the intraocular pressure were analyzed. We found that the amount of energy has no special influence on the kind of ocular contusion, but that it does influence the dynamics of an injury. In direct trauma, the location where the eye is struck, e.g. the cornea or sclera, plays a decisive role in retinal damage. By means of various measurements of intraocular pressure we were able to prove that in non perforating trauma, the anterior segment, has a buffer function and protects the retina in case of corneal trauma from damage caused by contusion.

[Diurnal fluctuations in human refraction].

The spectacle values of young healthy students were determined morning and afternoon by means of phoropter and autorefractometer. In addition, keratometry was performed. When the morning and afternoon refraction values were compared the latter were found to be about 0.25 diopters lower. This effect cannot be attributed exclusively to changes in the radius of the cornea.

[Effect of UVA on biosynthesis of melatonin in the retina].

No difference in the retinal acetylserotonin-methyltransferase was found in two groups of quail which were exposed to irradiation of 0.1 W/m2 with green and blue light respectively for 1 hour. Decreased retinal enzyme activities (isoelectric point pH 5.0) were observed in response to exposure to green and UVA light concomitantly with increased irradiation. Retinal enzyme activity in response to blue light was lower than in response to UVA light (0.1 W/m2). Although exposure to UVA light affects the visual process only slightly, melatonin biosynthesis was shown to be influenced significantly. Since melatonin is said to play an important role in light adaptation processes, it may be suggested that an imbalance between visual process and light adaptation may occur, predominantly in the aphakic eye.

[Magnifying vision aids and their use by vision-handicapped patients].

Patients with visual acuities of below 0.4 at both long and short range cannot be sure of seeing well enough to read or watch TV. Low-vision aids improve vision to a such a degree that these activities can be performed once again. However, aside from this positive effect, low-vision aids have some disadvantages which sometimes prevent patients from actually using them. An investigation conducted among 150 patients revealed that 84% of them used their low-vision aids for about an hour or so a day.

[Comparative studies of pilocarpine gel and pilocarpine eyedrops].

The influence of pilocarpine gel 4% and pilocarpine eye drops 4% or 2% on the optical and ophthalmological parameters pupil diameter, intraocular pressure, ametropia and visual acuity, range of accommodation, and nocturnal visual acuity with and without blinding was investigated. The tendency to amplify the myopia and impair nocturnal vision acuity with and without blinding was greater with eye drops than with gel. There was no significant difference between gel and eye drops as regards their effect on other parameters.

The effects of 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 on human T lymphocyte activation and proliferation: a cell cycle analysis.

Recent studies have demonstrated that 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 (calcitriol), the most biologically active metabolite of vitamin D, is a potent inhibitor of both lectin- and antigen-driven human T lymphocyte proliferation. To better characterize this effect, we performed cell cycle analysis of both untreated and calcitriol-treated peripheral blood mononuclear cells after PHA stimulation. By using the metachromatic dye acridine orange and flow cytometry, we found that calcitriol blocks the transition from the early, low RNA compartment of G1 (G1A) to the late, higher RNA compartment of G1 (G1B). Consistent with this observation was the inability of exogenous IL 1 or phorbol myristic acetate to overcome calcitriol's suppression of DNA synthesis. Indomethacin slightly reversed calcitriol's inhibition of transition from early to late G1, suggesting a minor, prostaglandin-dependent component to calcitriol's antiproliferative activity. Finally, by using the monoclonal antibodies anti-Tac and OKT9, we found that calcitriol had no effect on IL 2 receptor expression, an early G1 event, but markedly inhibited transferrin receptor expression, an IL 2-dependent, late G1 event. Thus, analysis of calcitriol's effects on the expression of these T cell activation antigens provides further evidence of the cell cycle specificity of calcitriol's action in regulating human T lymphocyte proliferation.
