This article discusses the implications of providing care to the elderly patient in the post anesthesia care unit (PACU). Using a systems approach, physiologic changes along with pharmacologic and pathophysiologic alterations associated with aging are identified. Anesthetic options are presented; and postoperative priorities and nursing implications for the elderly patient are also included.
It is the purpose of this article to discuss malignant hyperthermia, including its incidence, pathophysiology, and treatment. Anesthetic implications and PACU nursing considerations are also addressed.

It has been the purpose of this article to discuss the pharmacology and physiology of local anesthetics. By having an understanding of local anesthetics at this level, the PACU nurse should have a better understanding of the consequences of employing local anesthetics in regional anesthesia.
