Older people living in large metropolitan areas are often trapped in deteriorating communities and must learn to survive in difficult conditions. Project CAPABLE (Community Advocacy Promoting and Building Lifelines for Elders) provides a haven for 55-year-olds and older who live in a low-income, largely Hispanic neighborhood in Houston, Texas. Using a health-promotion model, Project CAPABLE provides health-promotion and case management services to help these older people remain in their homes and empowers them to assume an active role in their own health promotion.
This study describes an inner-city elderly minority population's awareness of hypertension and health perception compared with that of a younger hypertensive population. The elderly African American sample had a mean age of 71.6 years and systolic blood pressure of m = 143 mm Hg SD = 21. The younger sample averaged lower systolic readings (m = 129 mm Hg SD = 20). Overall health perception of both groups was positive (64%). Over 60% of the older people had been told that they were hypertensive. Because of the high percentage of aware hypertensive subjects on treatment, interventions focused on treatment adherence. Using the diffusion model, community awareness and strategies to remind people about their blood pressure were the focal interventions.
Cultural differences among nurses may influence the choice of terminology applicable to use of a nursing diagnostic statement. This study explored whether defining characteristics are consistently applied by culturally varied nurses in an English language setting. Two diagnoses, pain, and high risk for altered skin integrity, were studied within six cultures: African, Asian, Filipino, East Indian, African-American, and Anglo-American nurses. Overall, there was consistency between the cultural groups. Analysis of variance for the pain scale demonstrated differences among cultures on two characteristics of pain, restlessness and grimace. The only difference on the high risk for altered skin integrity scale was found on the distructor, supple skin.
