[Investigations on combined injuries, 25th communication: renal function and energy metabolism in mice with injuries combined of whole-body irradiation and an open skin wound (author's transl)].

In NMRI-mice injured with combined lesions (whole-body irradiation with 500 R and, two or seven days later, an open skin wound), lethality increased from 10 or 20% following sole irradiation up to 60%. Investigations of urinary excretion and serum levels in animals with combined injuries did not show undue elevations of the levels of electrolytes, creatinine, urea, uric acid and acid or alkaline equivalents. Analysis of lactate, pyruvate, ATP and ADP in liver tissue and blood serum indicated no significant changes in the energy metabolism in animals with combined injuries in comparison with mice irradiated only. These findings and those of our last communication (24. Mitteilung) seem to be incompatible with the presence of a shock state as cause of the high lethality of mice with combined injuries.

Dicarboxylate transport across the inner membrane of the chloroplast envelope.

The uptake of radioactively labeled dicarboxylates into the sorbitol-impermeable 3H2O space (the space surrounded by the inner envelope membrane) of spinach chloroplasts has been studied by means of silicone layer filtering centrifugation. 1. Malate, aspartate and a number of other dicarboxylates are rapidly transported across the envelope leading to an accumulation in the chloroplasts. This uptake proceeds mainly by a counterexchange with the dicarboxylates present there. 2. The dicarboxylate transport shows saturation characteristics allowing the determination of Km and V. 3. All dicarboxylates transported act as competitive inhibitors of the transport. 4. The activation energy of the transport as determined from the temperature dependency is evaluated to be 7 kcal/mol. 5. The rate of dicarboxylate transport is influenced by illumination, the countertransported molecules and the pH in the medium. These changes effect the transport velocity, whereas the corresponding Km values are not altered. 6. It is discussed whether there is more than one carrier involved in dicarboxylate transport in spinach chloroplasts.

[Diagnosis of osteoid osteoma with special reference to angiography, scintigraphy, computerized tomography and magnetic resonance imaging].

Clinical results from 50 patients with an osteoid-osteoma, show that night pain is considered one of the most important symptoms (90%). 88% responded to salicylic acid. The diagnosis can often be made from normal X-rays. Diagnostic problems are especially common in cases of rare, atypical localisations (spine, sacrum, clavicula, talus, calcaneus and the proximal part of the femur). The scintigraphy represents an unspecific but sensitive method of diagnosis in the early stages. The osteoid-osteoma is visible as a "hot spot" or, in the subperiosteal type, as a diffuse accumulation. Angiography is of great importance for preoperative localisation and differential diagnosis. Computer tomography is particularly valuable for localisation in the region of the spine. Magnetic resonance is an excellent method of examination. The three dimensional imaging allows an exact localisation, especially in atypical and difficult localisations. This will be the preferred method of the future, not least because there is no exposure to radiation.
