Determinants of fast repeat migrations of the labor force: evidence from the linked national survey data of Taiwan.

"The main objectives of this paper are (1) to identify the determinants of job-related fast repeat migrations of individuals in the civilian labor force of Taiwan, and (2) to examine whether the effects of these determinants are largely consistent with the existing theories and with the findings of other empirical studies. Our study is based on the linked microdata of the annual national migration surveys of Taiwan from 1980 through 1989.... We review the main theories of repeat migrations and formulate a set of hypotheses that can be tested against the Taiwanese data."

The dependence of marriage migrations in Japan on personal factors and ecological variables.

"The purpose of this paper is to explain the interprefectural migrations at marriage in Japan by personal factors and ecological variables, using a multivariate statistical model called the nested logit model....The research is based on the micro data from a national survey on the life-course migration history of household heads and spouses, conducted in 1986 by the Institute of Population Problems in the Ministry of Health and Welfare...." Factors considered include partners' prefecture of residence, coresidence with parents, nativity, education, sibling status, period of marriage, income, gender, employment, and population density. Education selectivity in internal migration in mainland China.

"The purpose of this paper is to study the selectivity in...internal migration in Mainland China with respect to the level of education, based on a sample of young adults (aged 17-29) taken from the micro data of the 1987 one-percent National Population Survey (NPS87)....[We focus first] on the education selectivity in migrations among the city, town and rural strata of the urban/rural hierarchy [and then examine] the education selectivity in migration among metropolitan, coastal and interior regions." Effects of personal factors on the destination choice patterns of Canadian immigrants: an evaluation within a multivariate framework.

"The purpose of this paper is to study the effects of personal factors on the established destination choice patterns of Canadian immigrants in 1981 within a multivariate context, using the micro data in the Public Use Sample (PUS) of the 1981 Canadian population census. Six personal attributes encompassing ethnic origin, level of education, occupation, class of work, income and period of immigration are...used." (SUMMARY IN CHI)

Provincial out-migration patterns of Canadian elderly: characterization and explanation.

"Interprovincial migration patterns of Canada's elderly are examined and compared with their nonelderly counterparts, by using data from Revenue Canada's income tax file for a fifteen-year period (1966/67-1980/81)." The results indicate that departure rates and patterns of destination choice are broadly similar for both groups, although "destination choice of the elderly was relatively sensitive...to environmental factors, whereas that of the nonelderly was relatively sensitive to labor-market variables...."

Joint effects of ecological and personal factors on elderly interprovincial migration in Canada.

"This paper analyzes the joint effects of ecological and personal factors on elderly migration in Canada in the late 1970s, using information on migration and personal factors extracted from the individual file of the 1981 Public Use Sample. Our focus on elderly Canadians stems from the expectation that the Canadian population will continue to age rapidly over the next three decades and that the elderly's demand for services (for example, health care and income maintenance) will expand rapidly as a consequence. Some of these services are clearly location-specific and should be matched to the changing distribution of the elderly population, which is, of course, affected by geographic mobility." Nested logit model and maximum quasi-likelihood method: a flexible methodology for analyzing interregional migration patterns.

"A flexible methodology for explaining interregional migration in terms of relevant socioeconomic variables is set forth in this paper. Concerned with setting observation against theory, it makes use of (1) the nested logit model as a theoretical substratum, and (2) the maximum quasi-likelihood method as a method for parameter estimation and statistical inference. Application to interprovincial migration data over a 22-year period (1961-1962 to 1982-1983) shows that, in Canada, migration does not appear to serve well as an equalizer of economic opportunities."

An analysis of migratory systems: 1. Theory.

This is the first of a planned series of three papers in which the authors attempt to combine evolutionary migration models with stochastic utility theory. This first paper deals with the evolution of migratory systems. Such systems are first defined, and the foundations upon which their evolution is based are described. The paper concludes with a discussion of disequilibrium, which is central to the series. "Disequilibrium is related to the concept of a steady state, the existence of which is established for nonlinear migratory systems of the type discussed here."

An analysis of migratory systems: 2. Operational framework.

"This is the second in a series of three interrelated papers which aim to combine evolutionary migration models with stochastic utility theory. The first paper dealt with migratory dynamics. Here the details are given of a choice model, established by McFadden, which can be used in conjunction with migratory dynamics thus providing an explicit link between the macroproperties of the population system and human behaviour. First, the structure of transition probabilities is derived under a two-level decision to migrate. An argument is then given about the empirical form of these probabilities, and the discussion closes with a method which can be used for their maximum likelihood estimation."

The dynamics of spatial labor mobility in the Netherlands.

"This paper discusses several factors that may explain [the] dynamic properties of internal labor migration. [The authors] focus especially on the influence of labor market and housing conditions on the mobility of people. A two-stage, generation-allocation model is proposed to investigate the role of different factors in the explanation of aggregate interregional migration flows. This model is applied to recent data on interprovincial labor migration in the Netherlands. The results indicate that housing supply seems to be an important determinant of temporal developments of spatial mobility, and that also the conditions on national and regional labor markets are associated with specific properties of recent migration patterns."
