Gastroenterology: the first 40 years.

Functional gastroenterological disorders were diagnosed in over 50 per cent of patients aged 40 years and under, referred to a district general hospital combined gastroenterology clinic. Peptic ulceration, gastro-oesophageal reflux, biliary tract disease and inflammatory bowel disease accounted for almost 70 per cent of the organic disorders encountered. Malignant disease was rare. The implications for diagnostic investigation in this age group are discussed.

Surgical aspects of a district hospital combined gastroenterology clinic.

The surgical aspects of 12 years' involvement with a combined consultative gastroenterology clinic at a district general hospital are reviewed. In this time the overall number of patients subjected to surgery has gradually fallen and the average age of patient referral has gradually increased and the logistical implications are considered. Trends for the common diagnoses encountered are discussed and the educational benefit of the clinic is stressed.

Staphylococcus aureus cell surface: capsule as a barrier to bacteriophage adsorption.

Encapsulated Staphylococcus aureus strains M and Smith diffuse bound phage 84 and 52A much less efficiently than their unencapsulated counterparts, M variant and Smith compact. It is proposed that the capsule acts as a barrier excluding phage from interaction with their receptor (cell wall peptidoglycan and teichoic acid). Inefficient phage adsorption by encapsulated staphylococci may explain, in part, the poor phage typing of such strains.
