Thymus-dependent lymphocytes and delayed hypersensitivity in low birth weight infants.

The proportion of thymus-dependent (T) lymphocytes in the blood and the ability to mount cutaneous delayed hypersensitivity to a battery of antigens were evaluated in 50 low birth weight (LBW) infants when they were 3 months to 5 years old. There was a significant reduction in the number of T lymphocytes. Delayed hypersensitivity was impaired. The abnormalities were more pronounced in those with persistent growth retardation. It is suggested that continued postnatal depression of cell-mediated immunity in LBW infants may contribute to increased frequency of infections and immunopathological diseases.

Relationship between serum cholinesterase and low density lipoproteins in children with nephrotic syndrome.

1. A significant increase in the activity of serum cholinesterase and concentration of dextran sulphate precipitable lipoproteins, cholesterol and triglycerides was observed in sixteen children with a diagnosis of nephrotic syndrome when compared with the values obtained in 22 other normal children of comparable ages. 2. In 7 children with nephrotic syndrome serum concentrations of beta-lipoprotein and cholinesterase were markedly higher in the acute stage compared to the convalescent stage. A working hypothesis is proposed to explain the hyperlipoproteinemia in nephrotic syndrome.

Serum beta -- lipoproteins: studies in a patient and in guinea pigs after the ingestion of organophosphorus compounds.

A patient admitted to this hospital with Parathion poisoning had a marked reduction in serum cholinesterase activity and concentration of low density lipoprotein. The enzyme and the lipoprotein levels returned to normal with clinical recovery. Guinea pigs treated with phospholine iodide showed depressed levels of serum cholinesterase and beta-lipoprotein. It is suggested that the decrease in beta-lipoproteins is due to the decrease in cholinesterase activity.

Krabbe's disease: globoid cell leukodystrophy.

The clinical features of regression in mental and motor development of a 7-month-old child are reported, together with the demonstration of a profound deficiency of galactosylceramide beta-D-galactosidase in a liver biopsy. The diagnosis of Krabbe's disease or globoid cell leukodystrophy (GLD) is therefore unequivocally established. The clinical features and morbid anatomical findings permitting the diagnosis of GLD in two of the child's sibs are summarized. This is the first report from Newfoundland of this inborn error of sphingolipid metabolism.
