[Radiosensitizing and toxic effect of metronidazole and its ortho-isomer 1-(2-hydroxyethyl)-2-methyl-4-nitroimidazole on Escherichia coli B/r cells].

A study was made of the effect of metronidazole and isometronidazole on the survival rate of irradiated and nonirradiated E. coli B/r cells. These substances had similar radiosensitizing activity with regard to anoxic cells and did not sensitize cells irradiated in the air. At the same time, isometronidazole was found to be less toxic than metronidazole.

[Radiosensitizing activity of maleic acid derivatives. Effect of maleic acid o-nitroanilide, anilide and diethyl ester on the survival of gamma-irradiated cells of Escherichia coli B/r].

Among three substances under study, only o-nitroanilide of maleic acid (oNAM) possessed a radiosensitizing activity. Radiosensitivity of E. coli B/r cells irradiated in the presence of Ar and oNAM was higher by 4.8 times than that of irradiated controls. The survival rate of E. coli B/r cells irradiated in the presence of oxygen was changed by 1.4 times by the effect of oNAM.

[Toxic and radiosensitizing effect of reduced nitroimidazoles on E. coli B/r cells].

The spectrophotometric method was used to study the rate of chemical reduction of misonidazole and metronidazole by NH4Cl and Zn in the atmosphere of argon and oxygen. Reduction of drugs increased their toxicity for hypoxic and oxygenated E. coli B/r. The reduced metronidazole is a more effective radiosensitizer of hypoxic E. coli B/r than the original compound.

[Metabolic and hematologic changes in the northern red-backed vole Clethrionomys rutilus and the large-toothed red-backed vole Clethrionomys rufocanus during short-term starvation and refeeding].

The effect of starvation has been investigated on the content of glucose and lipids in the blood plasma, on the level of leucocytes in the peripheral blood and on the concentration of total lipids and glycogen in the liver. It was found that in both species of the voles, starvation within 20-22 hours sharply decreases glucose content and increases lipid content of the blood plasma. The liver glycogen becomes almost completely exhausted. These changes are more significant than those observed under similar conditions in laboratory rodents (albino mice and rats). During starvation of the voles, the level of leucocytes drastically decreases, whereas lipid content of the liver significantly increased. These changes are absent in laboratory rodents. The decrease in the content of glucose and in the level of leucocytes in the blood is more significant in C. rufocanus than in C, rutilis. On the contrary, accumulation of the lipids in the liver is more intense in the latter. The recovery of the investigated indices after refeeding is very slow. Possible significance of these re-arrangements for temperature and immune homeostases, as well as for regulation of other functions in the organism, is discussed.
