[A case report of spontaneous otoacoustic emissions].

A case with audible spontaneous oto-acoustic emissions (SOAE) in an infant aged four months is presented. The frequency was determined to be approximately 6,100 Hz and the volume to 27 dB sound pressure level (SPL). The mechanism involved in SOAE is summarized.

Curving effect of scarification or unilateral perichondrial lining on septal cartilage from human autopsy material.

From 20 cadavers septal cartilage was removed within 48 hours of death. From each cartilage four strips were prepared, two with preserved perichondrium on one surface and the other two not. On one strip from each group scarification was performed through about half the cartilage thickness. The curving of the cartilage strips was measured immediately after scarification and 5 h thereafter. The 17 mm. long strips showed a mean curving due to the scarification of 1.06 mm., 80 per cent of which occurred immediately after the scarification. It was demonstrated also that a unilaterally intact perichondrial lining per se entailed a curving averaging 0.52 mm., an effect which did not occur within the course of 5 h. Both effects were highly significant. It was not possible to demonstrate any correlation between these effects and donor age, cartilage thickness or orientation in the septum.

Goblet-cell density in human bronchus in chronic bronchitis.

In 50 patients, up to six mucosal biopsy specimens were taken during bronchoscopy from the medial part of the trachea and from the main and lobe bronchi, and the density of goblet cells was studied using the whole-mount method. No significant differences in density were found between the trachea and the main or lobe bronchi in the normal patients or in the cases with abnormalities. In the normal patients, the interindividual median density was 127 cells per field corresponding to 7,200 cells/sq mm; in chronic bronchitis, there were 174 cells per field corresponding to 9,800 cells/sq mm. The goblet-cell density was found to be significantly higher in smokers than in nonsmokers.

Circulating levels of neuropeptides (CGRP, VIP, NPY) in patients with fulminant hepatic failure.

The present study investigated the circulating levels and cerebral fluxes of calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP), and neuropeptide Y (NPY) and their relation to cerebral blood flow (CBF) during normoventilation and hyperventilation in patients with fulminant hepatic failure (FHF). Sixteen patients with FHF were studied and compared to six patients with cirrhosis of the liver. CBF was measured by the (133)Xe wash-out technique. Blood samples were obtained simultaneously from the artery and internal jugular bulb. Concentrations of CGRP and VIP were higher in FHF than in cirrhosis, 87 (55-218) vs. 29 (21-42) pmol/L, and 11 (6-29) vs. 5 (3-9)pmol/L, respectively. NPY was normal, none of the measures were related to CBF, and there was no detectable net brain fluxes. Hyperventilation did not alter any of the measures. CGRP and VIP in FHF seem to reflect hemodynamic changes in the systemic rather than in the cerebral circulation.

Congenital hearing loss and rubella infection.

In an examination of Danish children aged 0 to 4 years, with congenital sensorineural hearing loss, 60% (39/65) had rubella antibody, compared with only 23% (17/72) in an age-matched control group. Based upon these results and similar investigations reported in the literature, it is concluded that serological testing for rubella antibody has proved to be of major importance in the evaluation of etiological factors of congenital hearing loss. Although diagnostic conclusions cannot be drawn on the basis of serological testing per se in the individual child, it is important to estimate the incidence of fetal rubella infection as the cause of congenital hearing loss, since this type of hearing loss may be prevented by active immunization.
