[Compartment syndrome after femoral contusion. Case report and review of the literature].

Compartment syndromes of the lower arm and lower leg are quite well known by now and have been often described in the literature. Those of the upper arm and thigh are rarer and those after pure closed lesion of the soft parts of the thigh are the subject of only sporadic reports in the literature. A recently observed case of this kind prompted the present case report and review of the literature.

[Progressive pneumoperitoneum. For preoperative preparation in giant abdominal soft tissue hernias].

Without special preoperative preparation giant hernias of the abdominal wall which have "forfeited their right of domicile" can only be repaired under great difficulties and with substantial risk of the patient. A method of preliminary enlargement of the peritoneal cavity is described - the progressive pneumoperitoneum - which minimises the technical difficulties and the patient's risk. The "right of domicile" is regained. Two case reports illustrating the procedure are given.

[Porocephalosis].

A diagnostic laparotomy was performed in a bush hospital on a 35-year-old African woman with a 10-year history of abdominal pain. It revealed hundreds of small calcified masses, 1-2 cm in diameter, throughout the abdominal cavity. Histological examination of a biopsy specimen from the peritoneum showed nearly complete calcification of tissue nodules with questionable parasite residues. A plain X-ray film of the abdomen, which it had been impossible to obtain earlier, had comma- and horseshoe-like calcifications which were interpreted as calcified residues of Armillifer, a parasite endemic in snakes. The patient used to eat snake meat frequently. There is no causal treatment of this infestation, termed pentastomiasis or porocephalosis.
