Development of sensitivity to the needs and suffering of a sick person in students of medicine and dentistry.

Doctor and patient meet in a circle of feelings determined by suffering. Sensitivity to the suffering is an axis determining the nature of the doctor and patient relationship. The patient's experience of an illness is individual, private, and very often difficult to describe. But the possibility to understand the suffering of another person comes from the fact that suffering is a universal feeling. We propose to enter the world of patient's experience by writing a letter to a doctor, which would reflect their experiences and expectations towards him. This was the task required for 120 students of the second year of medicine and dentistry education.

Education, Medical↗

[Michael Balint and his conceptions of medical education of physicians for effectiveness in working with patients].

The paper presents conception of the education of students and physicians in the Balint's group. The most important is the Balint's idea is to present fundamental relations between the physician and the patient. A therapeutic effect is the result of the very good understanding, confidence, tolerance, positive emotions between physician and patient. The Balint's group changes the physician's attitude, the relation to the patient is more intensive, there less fear is more intensive, there less fear and frustration. In the Balint's idea very important is an intensity and quality of the therapy. In the group with the leader, students and physicians learn to understand themselves in the emotional and intellectual areas.

[Stress and diseases].

The paper presents the contemporary conceptions of stress. Psychosomatic diseases have the composite etiology being made up of biologic and psychosocial factors, for instance stress. The contemporary medicine does not fully appreciate the important role of the psychosocial factors in the etiology of diseases. More and more physicians understand, the traditional, biologic model of the treatment of disorders as myocardial infarction, morbus uicerosus or tumoursis uneffective.

Adaptation, Psychological↗

[Psychoimmunology and disease based on certain research results].

The paper presents the results of researches in psychoimmunology. This new science creates an integrated model of man, and immunologic, endocrinological or nervous systems are very closely connected with personality. The findings show that health or disease depend on complex, psychophysiological mechanisms. Factors very important for health are: genetic factor, personality, stress and coping, economic and social situation, work, family, etc. The immunity unites with personality, thinking, attitudes, emotions, whose kind, strength and adjustment depend on the sense of coherence.

Adaptation, Psychological↗

[Main issues of psychoneuroimmunology: Part I].

Psychoneuroimmunology is concerned with interdependent links between psyche, nervous, endocrine and immune systems. The origin of this scientific discipline is a breakthrough in the way of thinking about the functioning of a person and contributes to the holistic attitude. The results of research in psychoneuroimmunology are of particular significance for psychosomatic medicine since they explain in a systemic way earlier clinical observations and scientific studies concerning the influence of stress on the health condition. Studies of the immune system conditioning are becoming a direction which is cognitively significant and clinically important. The aim of the standard immune system conditioning by pharmacological means is to activate the potential for the human body to cope with disease.

[Main issues of psychoneuroimmunology: Part II].

In psychoneuroimmunology links between psyche and the body are examined in the context of neurotransmitter, hormone and immuno-transmitter interaction. This allows for construction of models which show empirically verifiable links between the nervous, endocrine and immune systems. The earlier concepts of stress by Cannon and Selye focused on the physical and mental strain influence on the action of the nervous and endocrine systems. Ursin, Olff and Schedlowski introduced the concept of stress extended by an immune system reaction, which is an integral part of the alarm phase. A change in the amount of NK cells and their stress-influenced activity is an important defense mechanism of the body. It constitutes a component of the preparation for defense against potential pathogen penetration.

Humans↗

[The psyche, the immunological system and problems of health and disease].

Psychoneuroimmunology is a new tendency in the science, which integrates medicine and the social sciences. Interdisciplinary point of view on the etiology and the treatment of the many diseases fortifies the empirically holistic conception. Which is very old in medicine. The disease is the result of the collapse of the defensive mechanism in stress. The nervous, hormonal and immunological systems are integrated. The social environment and stress influence the individuals personality and cause diseases. The difficult situations, for instance: death of a close person divorce, examination, solitude etc., frequently cause immunosuppression. Psychotherapy can "wake" up the immune system.

Health Status↗

[Life stress events and individual reactions to stress in relation to illness].

Data was collected from 90 persons in relation to the level of their emotional reactions to life's difficulties as well as to the number of somatic symptoms. It was concluded that falling ill with certain infectious diseases and some psychosomatic states are related to the increased level of emotional processes and the number of psychosomatic symptoms to stress.
