Benign cementoblastoma. Case report.

Benign cementoblastoma is a rare benign odontogenic tumour of mesenchymal origin. A case of a 24-year-old man with benign cementoblastoma is presented. The lesion manifested as a round, radiopaque mass attached to the root of the left first molar of the mandible. The tooth was extracted and the lesion was removed. A diagnosis of benign cementoblastoma was made microscopically. There has been no evidence of recurrence during the three-year follow-up period. A review of the literature and a discussion of the histologic features of this case are included.

[Intracardiac repair of truncus arteriosus with severe truncal valve regurgitation in neonate].

The majority of infants born with truncus arteriosus associated with truncal valve regurgitation are seen within the first week of life with the manifestation of severe congestive heart failure. The patient reported herein was a 6-day-old male with severe congestive heart failure due to massive truncal valve regurgitation. Rastelli operation with simultaneous truncal valve plasty was undertaken. The truncal valve consisted of four cusps. One left cusp was small and prolapsed. The valvuloannuloplasty was performed to the small cusp. The patient was discharged and doing well at six months postoperatively, though mild degree of the truncal valve regurgitation was recognized. We believe that the plasty of truncal valve is an effective surgical procedure for the correction of sever truncal valve regurgitation in neonate.

Ectopic tonsillar tissue in the mucosa of the floor of the mouth simulating a benign tumour. Case report.

Ectopic tonsillar tissue in the mucosa of the floor of the mouth is rare. A case of a 38-year-old man with ectopic tonsillar tissue in the mucosa of the floor of the mouth is described. The lesion was manifested as a small, painless tumour. There was difficulty in establishing a clinical diagnosis, but it was thought to be a benign tumour and was removed and then examined histopathologically to confirm the diagnosis.

Comparative clinical study of induction and emergence time in sevoflurane and enflurane anaesthesia.

The induction and emergence times in patients who received minor oral surgery under sevoflurane with nitrous oxide or enflurane with nitrous oxide were compared. The induction time required for the loss of eyelid reflex when using sevoflurane (1.6 +/- 0.2 min) was significantly shorter than that in the enflurane group (2.9 +/- 0.4 min). There was no significant difference in the recovery time in the two groups.

[Preparation of monoclonal antibodies against duck hepatitis B core antigen and analysis of the monoclonal antibodies].

Mice were immunized against duck hepatitis B virus core (DHBc) particles isolated from the liver of asymptomatic carrier ducks of duck hepatitis B virus (DHBV) by ultracentrifugation. Their spleen cells were fused with mouse myeloma (NS-1) cells, and 12 clones of hybridoma cells secreting antibodies against DHBc (anti-DHBc) were isolated. According to the reactivity to core particles and core peptide obtained from DHBc particles treated with SDS-2ME, the 12 antibodies were classified into two groups. Two monoclonal antibodies reacted against both core particles and core peptide (B-type), the other ten monoclonal antibodies reacted against core particles but did not react against core peptide obtained from DHBc particles treated with SDS-2 ME. (A-type). Solid phase enzyme immuno assay (EIA) using these two types of antibodies could detect core antigenisity not only in the liver homogenate but also in the DHBV infected serum. Sucrose gradient analysis and gel filtration analysis revealed this DHBc antigenisity in the serum is not carried by core particles but carried by core peptide, equivalent to HBe antigen in the serum of Hepatitis B virus (HBV) carrier. This EIA may provide sensitive test monitoring both serum DHBe antigen levels and DHBc antigen levels in the liver during DHBV infection.

Deacetylravidomycin N-oxide, a new antibiotic. Taxonomy and fermentation of the producing organism and isolation, structure and biological properties of the antibiotic.

Streptomyces ravidus S50905 was found to produce a new antibiotic, deacetylravidomycin N-oxide, together with ravidomycin and deacetylravidomycin in a culture medium containing sodium anthraquinone-beta-sulfonate. The structure of this new compound was determined from NMR and mass spectrometric data, and further confirmed by chemical synthesis from deacetylravidomycin. Deacetylravidomycin N-oxide was antitumor active against P388 leukemia and Meth A fibrosarcoma in a wide range of doses, and considerably less toxic than deacetylravidomycin. Its antibacterial activity was less potent than deacetylravidomycin. Ravidomycin N-oxide was also synthesized from ravidomycin and its biological properties were tested.

New piericidin glucosides, glucopiericidins A and B.

The new piericidin group antibiotics, glucopiericidins A and B were isolated from the culture broth of Streptomyces pactum S48727 (FERM P-8117) as co-metabolite of piericidin A1. The structures of glucopiericidins A and B were determined as piericidin A1, 10-O-beta-D-glucoside and piericidin A1, 3'-O-D-glucoside on the basis of their spectral and chemical properties, respectively. Glucopiericidins were more potent in inhibiting antibody formation than piericidin A1 in vitro. In addition, these substances showed better antimicrobial activities than piericidin A1. Acute toxicities of these substances in mice were lower than that of piericidin A1. This indicates that D-glucose in glucopiericidin molecules is important in modulating their physiological activities.

Pyrroxamycin, a new antibiotic taxonomy, fermentation, isolation, structure determination and biological properties.

A strain of streptomycete was found to produce a new antibiotic pyrroxamycin. This compound was isolated from the culture broth of Streptomyces sp. S46506. The chemical structure was determined to be 4,5-dichloro-2-(6',8'-dichloro-4'H-1',3'-benzodioxin-4'-yl)-3-nitr opyrrole by its chemical character and 1H and 13C NMR spectral analysis. Pyrroxamycin was active against Gram-positive bacteria and dermatophytes.

Primary reconstruction of defects in the upper and lower lips following tumor excision.

Three cases of basal cell carcinoma and epithelioma in the upper and lower lips are reported. The defects in the upper lip following tumor excision were repaired with an application of Burow's technique. Martin's method, after modification of Bernard cheiloplasty, was used for the repair of the lower lip defect. The methods proved to be quite effective in providing excellent aesthetic results. No disturbance was noted in the activity of the repaired upper lips. The labial function, however, associated with the orbicularis oris was left impaired in the newly formed lower lip.
