Eighty-eight patients with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) and seventy-two unrelated normal controls in Korea were studied for Gm allotypes and HLA-antigens. Ten Gm phenotypes were found among the Korean population. The phenotype frequencies of Gm axg (1,2,21), Gm ag (1,21), Gm agb0b3b5st (1,21, 11,13,10,15,16) and Gm agfb0b1b3b4b5 (1,21,3,11,5,13,14,10) were higher than the other Gm allotypes, but there was no significant difference between patients and controls. HLA-BW54 was found in 15% of patients who had any of those Gm allotypes (Gm axg, Gm agb0b3b5st, Gm ab0b3b5st). However there was no significant difference in frequency as compared with controls.
We studied Gm typing of serum samples from 838 donors; 177 had chronic hepatitis, 166 liver cirrhosis, 113 primary hepatocellular carcinoma, 21 alcoholic hepatitis, 18 fatty liver and 343 were unrelated normal blood donors. The distribution of Gm phenotypes and haplotypes in sera from patients with primary hepatocellular carcinoma differed from that in the normal controls; the Gm phenotype (1,2,21,13,15,16) and the haplotype Gm1,2,21 were significantly more common in this patient group (X2 = 18.56, corrected P less than 0.01, relative risk = 3.12; X2 = 25.52, corrected P less than 0.005, respectively). Overall, in the other liver diseases, we observed no significant Gm phenotype or haplotype association. The commitment to progression to primary liver carcinoma seems to be ascribable to a gene or polygenes close to the IgG heavy chain loci.

HLA--B8 and/or Bw15, associated with juvenile onset insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (JDM) in Caucasians, have a very low frequency in the Japanese population. Thus, we were interested in investigating the association between JDM and HLA antigen in a Japanese population. Eighty-nine patients with JDM and 128 unrelated random controls were HLA-typed by the microlymphocytotoxicity test. The data revealed a significant, positive association between this type of diabetes mellitus and HLA--Bw54 (Bw22-J, J-1) antigen (Japanese-specific split antigen of HLA--Bw22).

The majority of patients with hepatic cirrhosis in Japan do not have a history of acute hepatitis or alcoholism. Twenty-nine patients with hepatic cirrhosis which were thought as random samples from cirrhotic patients without a history of acute hepatitis or alcoholism were Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) typed. Association of HLA-B5 and -BW22-J with hepatic cirrhosis of apparently unknown etiology was found in p less than 0.003, and p less than 0.01, respectively (128 controls). A predisposition linked to HLA-B5 or -BW22-J related gene or genes seems to play a role in the development of hepatic cirrhosis, at least in a substantial part of patients with hepatic cirrhosis of apparently unknown etiology in Japan.
To evaluate the transgenic mouse carrying a human prototype c-Ha-ras gene (rasH2 mouse) as a model for 26-week carcinogenicity tests, Di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP), a peroxisome proliferator, was administered to 15 rasH2 mice/sex/group at concentrations of 1,500, 3,000 or 6,000 ppm, and to 15 wild-type (non-Tg) mice/sex/group at a concentration of 6,000 ppm in their diets for 26 weeks. Survival rates and food consumption in the groups treated with DEHP and in the control group were similar. Body weight gain in rasH2 and non-Tg mice at 6,000 ppm in the terminal week decreased about 10% as compared to the control group. Common findings related to treatment with DEHP in rasH2 and non-Tg mice included hypertrophy with coarse granules and deposit of pigment in the liver, hydronephrosis and tubular regeneration in the kidney, focal atrophy in the testis, and increased eosinophilic body in the nasal cavity. Hepatocellular adenoma was induced by treatment with DEHP, and was confined to male rasH2; mice the incidence being 7%(1/15), 13%(2/15), and 27%(4/15) in the 1,500-, 3,000-, and 6,000-ppm group, respectively. Point mutation was not detected in codon 12 and 61 of human c-Ha-ras transgene upon DNA analyses on frozen samples taken from these hepatocellular adenomas. From the results obtained in this 26-week carcinogenicity study, it is concluded that DEHP is a hepato-carcinogen for transgenic mouse carrying a human prototype c-Ha-ras gene.
A two-dimensional, finite element method was used to examine the influence of material selection and suprabony exposure of the implant coating on thermal and mechanical stress distribution. Hydroxyapatite coating reduced the heat conduction to the surrounding tissue because of its low thermal conductivity. However, thermal stress resulted from thermal expansion of the hydroxyapatite and titanium core. This might influence the success of hydroxyapatite-coated implants because the biomechanical properties of ceramics are so poor for tensile and shearing stress. In addition, this tendency becomes more pronounced when the hydroxyapatite coating surface extends beyond the cortical bone.
This study was conducted to examine prevalence of craniomandibular disorders in young adults compared with that in older subjects. In addition, the relationship between various oral conditions and this dysfunction was studied. No difference was found in the incidence of craniomandibular disorders between the groups. Classification according to the Helkimo index showed significant difference in complaints of craniomandibular disorders symptoms between the groups. Most of the older patients did not complain of mild disorders. The results suggest that conditions such as the number of teeth, presence or absence of dentures, and the type of denture worn are not important factors in the pathogenesis of craniomandibular disorders.
The occlusal curvature should be harmonized with stomatognathic function, but excessive occlusal curvatures are found in some craniomandibular disorder patients. Forty healthy subjects and 95 patients with craniomandibular disorder (50 with clicking, 25 with locking, and 20 with myofascial pain dysfunction syndrome) were evaluated to investigate the functional significance of the occlusal curvature. Anteroposterior and lateral occlusal curvature were measured using the least-square approximation of the mandibular buccal cusps in a second-order quadratic and modification of Monson's 4-inch sphere. "Clicking" and "locking" groups had significantly greater occlusal curvatures than healthy subjects. There appeared to be a relationship between occlusal curvature and craniomandibular disorders.
