Cobalt-mediated cyclic and linear 2:1 cooligomerization of alkynes with alkenes: a DFT study.

The mechanism of the cobalt-mediated [2 + 2 + 2] cycloaddition of two alkynes to one alkene to give CpCo-complexed 1,3-cyclohexadienes (cyclic oligomerization) has been studied by means of DFT computations. In contrast to the mechanism of alkyne cyclotrimerization, in which final alkyne inclusion into the common cobaltacyclopentadiene features a direct "collapse" pathway to the complexed arene, alkene incorporation proceeds via insertion into a Co-C sigma-bond rather than inter- or intramolecular [4 + 2] cycloaddition. The resulting seven-membered metallacycle 7 is a key intermediate which leads to either CpCo-complexed cyclohexadiene 5 or hexatriene 13. The latter transformation, particularly favorable for ethene, accounts, in part, for the linear oligomerization observed occasionally in these reactions. With aromatic double bonds, a C-H activation mechanism by the cobaltacyclopentadiene seems more advantageous in hexatriene product formation. Detailed investigations of high- and low-spin potential energy surfaces are presented. The reactivity of triplet cobalt species was found kinetically disfavored over that of their singlet counterparts. Moreover, it could not account for the formation of CpCo-complexed hexatrienes. However, triplet cobalt complexes cannot be ruled out since all unsaturated species appearing in this study were found to exhibit triplet ground states. Consequently, a reaction pathway that involves a mixing of both spin-state energy surfaces is also described (two-state reactivity). Support for such a pathway comes from the location of several low-lying minimum-energy crossing points (MECPs) of the two surfaces.

1,3,6,9,12,14,17,20-octaethynyltetrabenz[a,b,f,j,k,o]-4,5,10,11,15,16,21,22- octadehydro[18]annulene: a carbon-rich hydrocarbon.

Dodecaynes 1a-d have been prepared via a convergent strategy that employs Sonogashira couplings as the carbon-carbon bond-forming tool. Due to the steric bulk of the DMTS groups, 1c adopts a nonplanar conformation, the dynamics of which have been probed by VT-NMR. The cobalt-catalyzed isomerization of 1a,b produced the new conjugated phenylenes 2a,b and 3a,b, respectively. [structure: see text]

Hindered rotation in an "exploded" biphenyl.

The first cases of hindered rotation around the triple bond in simple diphenylacetylenes were observed, including that in chiral 2,2'-bis(trimethylsilyl)-6,6'-bis(dimethylthexylsilyl)diphenylacetylene.

Tris(benzocyclobutadieno)triphenylene and its lower biphenylene homologues by palladium-catalyzed cyclizations of 2,3-didehydrobiphenylene.

[reaction: see text] The Pd-catalyzed cycloaddition of didehydrobiphenylenes 2a,b, generated from the corresponding 3-(trimethylsilyl)-2-biphenylenyl triflates with fluoride, furnishes the C3-symmetric trimers 1a,b in which the embedded triphenylene unit is distorted to increase the aromaticity of the central benzene ring. Cocyclization of 2a,b with dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate provides the phenanthrene- and naphthalenecarboxylic ester analogues, depending on the catalyst used.

Syntheses of syn and anti doublebent [5]phenylene.

[structure: see text] The parent and dipropyl-substituted anti (1a,b) and syn doublebent (2a,b) [5]phenylenes have been assembled by CpCo-catalyzed double cyclization of regiospecifically constructed appropriate hexaynes. (1)H NMR, NICS, and an X-ray structural analysis of 1a reflect the aromatizing effect of double angular fusion on the central ring of the linear [3]phenylene substructure.

En route to archimedene: total synthesis of C3h-symmetric [7]phenylene.

[reaction: see text] The total synthesis of C(3)(h)-symmetric [7]phenylene has been accomplished by triple cobalt-catalyzed cycloisomerization of an appropriate nonayne. Its spectral data are in accord with the expectations for a triply angularly fused system, but its calculated heat of formation suggests the presence of a destabilizing sigma effect relative to its D(3)(h) isomer. The molecule constitutes the largest substructure of archimedene hitherto synthesized.

Synthesis and crystal structures of (fulvalene)W(2)(SH)(2)(CO)(6), (fulvalene)W(2)(mu-S(2))(CO)(6), and (fulvalene)W(2)(mu-S)(CO)(6): low valent tungsten carbonyl sulfide and disulfide complexes stabilized by the bridging fulvalene ligand.

Reaction of FvW(2)(H)(2)(CO)(6) with 2/8S(8) in THF results in rapid and quantitative formation of FvW(2)(SH)(2)(CO)(6). The crystal structure of this complex is reported and shows that the two tungsten-hydrosulfide groups are on opposite faces of the fulvalene ligand in an anti configuration. Nevertheless, treatment of FvW(2)(SH)(2)(CO)(6) (1) with PhN[double bond]NPh produces FvW(2)(mu-S(2))(CO)(6) (2) and Ph(H)NN(H)Ph. The crystal structure of the bridging disulfide, which cocrystallizes with 1 in a 2:1 ratio, is also described. Exposure of 2 equiv of *CrCp*(CO)(3) to 1 effects similar H atom transfers yielding 2 HCrCp*(CO)(3) and 2. Attempts to obtain crystals of the latter from solutions derived from this reaction mixture furnished a third product, FvW(2)(mu-S)(CO)(6) (3), which was analyzed crystallographically. The enthalpy of sulfur atom insertion into FvW(2)(H)(2)(CO)(6), yielding 1, has been measured by solution calorimetry.

Cobalt-mediated synthesis of angular [4]phenylene: structural characterization of a metallacyclopentadiene(alkyne) intermediate and its thermal and photochemical conversion.

[reaction: see text] The first X-ray crystal structure of a mononuclear metallacyclopentadiene(alkyne) complex has been obtained. This type of metallacycle is believed to be the key intermediate in the cobalt-mediated [2 + 2 + 2]cycloaddition of alkynes. Thermal treatment leads to the generation of angular [4]phenylene, the X-ray structural details of which are described. Under photochemical conditions, the cobaltacycle isomerizes to a highly strained (cyclobutadieno)dibenzocyclooctatrienyne complex.
