Isolation and culture of follicular papillae from murine vibrissae: an introductory approach.

The recent successes in culturing follicular papilla cells have afforded a rapid advance in our understanding of hair biology. Although the experimental manipulation of the papilla is briefly described in the original reports, a detailed description for workers starting in the field is not yet available. In this report we give a brief review of hair biology relevant to the papilla, and illustrate the method we have found successful for isolating and growing papilla cells.

[Abdominal pregnancy].

A 38-year-old woman, after a spontaneous abortion following extrauterine pregnancy, developed abdominal pregnancy which was diagnosed only 6 days before the term of delivery, although she had been regularly examined. In the first trimester of that pregnancy she wanted to interrupt pregnancy and an alleged artificial abortus was performed. By cesarean section a live, at term baby, 3000/50, was born without any visible malformations. The placenta was left in situ because it partly adhered to the colon sigmoideum, mesosigma, and the wall of the small pelvis. Although it is better in abdominal pregnancy with cesaren section to remove the placenta immediately, the authors think that to leave the placenta in situ is safer if its position is such that to remove it would expose the patient to great risk.

[Dynamics of changes in fetal presentation and position in late pregnancy].

The frequency of various presentations and positions of the fetus in individual gestational weeks in the third trimester was examined in 1137 pregnant women based on 1785 ultrasonic findings. Cephalic presentation at 28 weeks was observed in 62% cases and at the end of pregnancy in 95%. Breech presentation decreased from 29% to 4% before delivery, and transverse presentation was 10 times less frequent at delivery than at the beginning of the third trimester. The first and second fetal positions occurred almost equally in both of the main longitudinal presentations. Dynamics of changes regarding position and presentation was examined in 32 patients regularly each week. In 10 of them there was no presentation change and in 22, changes occurred once or several times, tending to attain a physiologic cephalic presentation before delivery. This presentation, once attained, did not change after the 33rd week. With regard to breech presentation, changes are possible even up to the 36th week. The optimal time for ultrasonic examination with the purpose of determining fetal presentation and position is 33-37 full gestational weeks.
