[Changes in the concentration of N-acetylneuraminic acid in the blood of patients with bladder cancer during radiotherapy].

The N-acetylneuraminic acid (N-ANA) concentration of serum in 24 patients with bladder carcinoma was measured with a modified Arzneibuch (D.L.) GDR-method before, during and after the postoperative radiotherapy. It was found that the N-ANA-concentrations in the patients operated resulted in a dependence from tumor staging already before the radiotherapy. The N-ANA concentration rose with increased staging. A temporary enhancement of the N-ANA-concentration with the maximum between 20. and 25 radiation fractions occurred in patients of staging T3 and relapses as well as with tumor cells being only little differentiated. The results are discussed in relation to the clinical importance.

Female

[Rare type of metastases in progressive cervix carcinoma].

There are demonstrated two cases of advanced cervical carcinoma with unusual localization of metastases. One patient showed a scalp metastasis and the other one had a ulcerated inguinal lymph node metastasis. X-ray therapy caused a sufficient remission of the metastatic tumors.

Brachytherapy

[Histological renal changes after short-term preoperative irradiation. A contribution to the pathogenesis of irradiation-induced kidney damage (author's transl)].

Early morphological changes caused by irradiation of the kidneys are presented. Due to hypernephroid carcinomas, the tumour-carrying renal ends were exposed to 1,100-3,150 rad during 2 weeks and nephrectomy was performed 3-7 days later. At this time, changes of all renal structures were evidenced by light microscopy. Their irradiation specificity and reversibility or irreversibility are discussed. Very early and simultaneous lesions of the renal structures were essential findings in our material. In the sequel, secondary renal hypertonia and glomerula nephrosis additionally occurred. The human kidney was found to be an organ sensitive to radiation. This should be considered when applying irradiation to the renal region.
