CT of the salivary glands.

CT of the salivary glands can produce clinically significant information that may help in the selection of appropriate therapy. It is the method of choice for the examination of mass lesions in and about the salivary glands. The role of CT for the evaluation of calculi and other obstructions and sialectasis is not yet determined. Conventional sialography may still be the method of choice for these entities.

Polycycloidal corrected tomography of the temporomandibular joint.

Historically, radiographic evaluation of the temporomandibular joint has been of limited value. A step-by-step technique which is more correct anatomically is suggested. This technique involves polycycloidal corrected tomography of the temporomandibular joint. Radiographic samples are presented, as well as the results of a random sampling of 300 cases. Fifty-seven percent of the cases showed radiographic changes, and the reasons and limitations of these results are interpreted.

Humans

Reduction of venous thrombosis complicating phlebography.

Patients who underwent radiographic phlebography were studied to determine the frequency of postphlebographic venous thrombosis. In a group of 23 patients who had negative phlebograms performed with standard contrast agent (60% sodium methylglucamine diatrizoate), nine had positive 125I-fibrinogen leg scans. On repeat phlebography, three had confirmed deep vein thrombosis, six overall developed deep or superficial thrombosis, and three had positive scans without demonstrable thrombi. In a second group of 34 patients studied with the contrast material diluted to 45%, only three developed positive scans, one due to deep venous thrombosis and two to superficial thrombosis. There was also a reduction in the incidence of postphlebographic symptoms of pain, tenderness, and erythema, but no apparent sacrifice in diagnostic accuracy.

Diatrizoate

Radiologic findings in persistent thyroglossal tract fistulas.

Recurrent cysts and persistent fistulas are frequent complications of thyroglossal cystectomy if the excision is not extended through the hyoid bone to the foramen cecum. In 3 cases of persistent thyroglossal tracts, fistulography was performed and found to be valuable in demonstrating the extent of the tract. Surgical excision was completed and specimens were examined histologically. The retained upper portion of the thyroglossal tract was the established cause of the recurrent symptoms; removal of the entire tract up to the foramen cecum was confirmed as the recommended procedure.

A simple effective technique for performing intraoperative cholangiography.

This simple, effective technique for performing intraoperative cholangiography uses a smooth-tipped side port cannula that is easily threaded into the cystic duct. Performance of intraoperative cholangiography is expedited by this method and artifacts commonly produced during cholangiography are avoided.
