Total central keratolysis.

Central keratolysis is a rare entity. An interesting case of unilateral central keratolysis in an aphakic patient is reported.

Aged

Water drinking provocative test.

Water drinking provocative test was carried out in 28 chronic simple glaucoma and 17 borderline cases of chronic simple glaucoma. These tests were carried out twice on the same patients with an empty stomach and after taking breakfast at an interval of 15 days. It was observed that there was no significant difference in the outcome of the results even when this test was carried out with a full stomach.

Adult

Relationship of pH of blood and aqueous with vitamin C.

Blood pH, aqueous pH, and intraocular tension were noted in 20 albino rabbits before and after administration of vitamin C in oral dosage of 7.5 gm/kg/day (in 4 equal divided doses for one week). A significant difference was noted in changes of blood pH and fall in intraocular tension but aqueous pH did not show any change. In 20 glaucoma patients there was no significant change in pH of blood of glaucoma after administration of vitamin C in 3.5 gm/kg body weight per day by oral route for one week (in 4 equal divided doses).

Acid-Base Equilibrium

pH of blood and aqueous in patients with glaucoma.

pH estimation of blood was carried out in 37 normal patients and 43 patients with chronic simple glaucoma. pH of blood did not show any statistical significant difference in the 2 groups. pH of aqueous also was noted in 8 patients with glaucoma and 8 normal patients and no significant difference was noted.

Adult

Plasma cortisol in glaucoma.

Plasma cortisol level and intraocular tension were determined diurnally in 40 normal and 40 glaucomatous patients at 8 AM and 8 PM. It was observed that (1) plasma cortisol level was higher in glaucomatous patients at both the periods; (2) the diurnal variation in plasma cortisol was parallel to diurnal variation in intraocular tension in both glaucomatous and normal persons; and (3) the diurnal variation in plasma cortisol level also was more marked in glaucomatous patients as compared to normal persons.

Adult

Tobacco smoking and glaucoma.

Effect of cigarette smoking on aqueous humor dynamics in 70 normal males and 70 primary glaucoma patients was studied. A rise of intraocular tension of more than 5 mm after last puff of cigarette was taken as a positive result. It was observed that this test was positive in 37.1% of primary glaucoma patients and only in 11.4% in normal persons--a statistically significant difference. Cigarette smoking causes vasoconstriction and may be leading to rise in episcleral venous pressure and thus inhibiting aquenous outflow from the angle. This test can be used as a provocative test for primary glaucoma patients.

Aqueous Humor

Cataract surgery performed before 800 B.C.

The general belief that the technique of cataract extraction in India in the Sushruta period (800 B.C.) was couching is no longer tenable. A study of the original text suggests that the method was more closely allied to the extracapsular extraction of recent times.

Cataract Extraction

Cysteine in corneal ulcer: part I. An experimental study.

This study was undertaken to see the healing effect of cysteine in corneal ulcer of traumatic origin (nonalkali burn). In both eyes of 11 albino rabbits, central corneal ulcers in a 5 mm diameter area were produced. Cysteine drops of 0.1 M were instilled in one eye while placibo (normal saline) drops were used in the other eye. This work was carried out as a blind study. The result of present work showed that the average rate of healing was enhanced with cysteine--it was 74 hours with cysteine while with placibo (normal saline) 98.7 hours. The statistical analysis of the present observation, ie, p and t value was highly significant.

Animals

Lysozyme in corneal ulcer.

In the present experimental study the role of lysozyme drops in healing of corneal ulcer of staphylococcal origin (sensitive to chloramphenicol) was studied on 16 albino rabbits. In 8 rabbits, in one eye placibo drops (distilled water) and in the other eye lysozyme 1% were put 4 times daily. In the other 8 rabbits, in one eye chloramphenicol drops 0.4% and in the other eye chloramphenicol drops 0.4% + lysozyme drops 1% were instilled 4 times daily. It was observed that the rate of healing of corneal ulcer was much earlier in the eyes which had local instillation of chloramphenicol drops + lysozyme in comparison to the eyes which had only chloramphenicol drops, lysozyme drops, or distilled water.

Animals

Tuberculoma of orbit.

An interesting case of tuberculoma of the orbit, involving the whole of the eyeball with other orbital cavity structures, is being presented. This is very rarely seen in clinical practice.
