The commercial production of chemicals using pathway engineering.

Integration of metabolic pathway engineering and fermentation production technologies is necessary for the successful commercial production of chemicals. The 'toolbox' to do pathway engineering is ever expanding to enable mining of biodiversity, to maximize productivity, enhance carbon efficiency, improve product purity, expand product lines, and broaden markets. Functional genomics, proteomics, fluxomics, and physiomics are complementary to pathway engineering, and their successful applications are bound to multiply product turnover per cell, channel carbon efficiently, shrink the size of factories (i.e., reduce steel in the ground), and minimize product development cycle times to bring products to market.

Making the move from clinician to manager. Do you have what it takes?

From the outside, management doesn't look like so difficult a job: schedule a few employees, attend a few meetings. From the inside, however, it's a different story, especially when it is the "inside" of the manager that determines managerial success. Although the author addresses clinicians who are interested in management, she has words of wisdom for all future and current managers.

Changes in the healthcare profession: from denial to acceptance.

As the government and other factors seem to be increasingly gaining control over the healthcare industry, many hospital managers and staff feel as if they're increasingly losing control over their jobs and their futures. Indeed, some administrators and physicians are experiencing a kind of stress that may be seen as a grief for the way things once were. Using Elisabeth Kubler-Ross's stages of the grieving process, the author explains how such stress can be managed and some control regained.

Cooperation of V-oncogenes in human epithelial cell transformation.

The development of tissue culture systems for propagation of human epithelial cells has aided the investigation of events that lead epithelial cells to become neoplastic. In the present study, nontumorigenic human epidermal keratinocytes, immortalized by Ad12-SV40 virus or pSv3-neo, were transformed by a variety of retroviruses containing bas, H-ras, fes, fms, erbB and src oncogenes. Such transformants showed morphological alterations and induced carcinomas when transplanted into nude mice. These findings demonstrate the malignant transformation of human primary epithelial cells in culture by the combined action of Ad12-SV40 virus and retroviral oncogenes and support a multistep process for neoplastic conversion. This in vitro system may be useful in studying the interaction of a variety of retroviral oncogenes and human epithelial cells.

Future education: what do nurse executives need?

In this study, the Management and Professional Job Functions Inventory (MP-JFI) was used to compare nurse executive skills with what nurse experts, executives from multiple industries, and multi-industry middle managers feel are needed leadership skills. Nurse executives with MBAs closely fit the profile of what executives from varied industries say is needed in the executive role.
