An improved method for preparation of samples for the simultaneous assay of some antiepileptic drugs by gas-liquid chromatography.

A new simple extraction method, e.g., for subsequent quantitative determination of some antiepileptic drugs by GLC is described. HCl and an internal standard are added to 100 microliter of plasma or any biological fluid. This mixture is applied directly to an Extrelut column. Lipophilic substances (i.e. the antiepileptic drugs diphenylhydantoin, primidone and phenobarbital) are then extracted into 20 ml of ether and the solvent is evaporated to dryness. Direct GLC analysis of the on-column methylated drugs is performed using a P-N-detector.

[Cryosurgical treatment of rectal carcinoma (author's transl)].

After comprehensive experimental especially morphological studies in animals, we started cryo-therapy of rectal carcinoma in 1972. We now present the first critical 5-years review concerning indication, clinical results and cryo-immunological features. In strongly indicated cases local tumour destruction by extremely low temperatures is superior to other palliative methods. Of 67 patients with rectal carcinoma treated with cryosurgery, 37 survived, 12 more than 36 months and 16 more than 24 months. Though there are only few hints indicating an increased immunological response following cryo-surgery, our investigations suggest a general influence on host's immunity by cryo-therapy.

Thiamine dependency in a patient with congenital lacticacidaemia due to pyruvate dehydrogenase deficiency.

A patient with congenital lactic acidosis, muscular hypotonia and severe ataxia is reported. The aetiology of his disease was found to be a deficiency of pyruvate dehydrogenase (E.C. 4.1.1.1.). Thiamine treatment (1.8 g/day) was successful in correcting biochemical and clinical symptoms. The mechanism of its action is probably based on activation of pyruvate dehydrogenase through interference in the physiologic regulation.

[Local cryosurgical management of colonic and rectal cancer].

Complex experimental investigations created the basis for cryosurgical treatment of colon and rectum cancer. 27 patients were chosen for cryotherapy according to strict indication. Especially developed instruments and technique are presented. A three year-follow up-study shows 19 patients alive, most of them without recurrence or troubles. Immediately after starting with cryosurgical treatment patients recover remarkably. In collaboration with the Dept. of Microbiology (Rhein.-Westfäl. Techn. Hochschule Aachen) the possibility of a special cryoimmunological response is investigated.
