MR imaging of pediatric cardiac tumors previously diagnosed by echocardiography.

Ten children, ranging in age from 3 weeks to 11 years, with a history of primary cardiac tumors were studied by two-dimensional echocardiography and by ECG triggered magnetic resonance (MR) imaging (six of them had rhabdomyomas). Eighteen of 31 tumors with intracavitary extension diagnosed by echocardiography were detected by MR. In addition, three intracavitary tumors were found by MR but not by echocardiography. Only 2 of 15 intramural tumors detected by echocardiography were identified by MR. Magnetic resonance imaging is inferior to echocardiography in the detection of intramural rhabdomyomas, but superior in delineation of the intra- and extracardiac extension of nonrhabdomyomal tumors.

Insecticidal and fungicidal compounds from Isatis tinctoria.

Tryptanthrin (1), indole-3-acetonitrile (2) and p-coumaric acid methylester (3) were isolated from the aerial parts of Isatis tinctoria L. The compounds show insecticidal and anti-feedant activity against termites (Reticulitermis santonensis), insect preventive and control activity against larvae of the house longhorn beetle (Hylotrupes bajulus) and fungicidal activity against the brown-rot fungus (Coniophora puteana).

Transport of resistance-inducing sterols in phloem sap of barley.

After root application of [7alpha-3H]-7beta-hydroxysitosterol and [3alpha,6beta-3H2]-6alpha-hydroxylathosterol these sterols could be detected in the leaves and phloem sap feeding aphids. These results imply that the phloem sap is a sterol transport system in barley plants.

Iridoids from Avicennia marina.

Three new iridoid glucosides, 10-O-[(E)-cinnamoyl]-geniposidic acid, 10-O-[(E)-p-coumaroyl]-geniposidic acid, 10-O-[(E)-caffeoyl]-geniposidic acid and the known iridoid glucoside, 2'-O-[(E)-cinnamoyl]-mussaenosidic acid have been isolated from Avicennia marina. The structures were determined primarily by NMR spectroscopy. The assignment of NMR signals was performed by means of 1H-1H COSY, HMQC and HMBC experiments.

Triterpenoid saponins from Astragalus trigonus.

One new, 3-O-[[[-alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1-->2)]-[beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1-->3)]-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1-->2)]-beta-D-glucuronopyranosyl]-3beta,22alpha,24-trihydroxyolean-12-ene and two known triterpenoid saponins, 3-O-[[alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1-->2)]-[beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1-->2)]-beta-D-glucuronopyranosyl]-3beta,22beta,24-trihydroxyolean-12-ene (azukisaponin V) and 3,16-di-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-3beta,6alpha,16beta-trihydroxycycloart-24-ene have been isolated from Astragalus trigonus. The structures were determined primarily by NMR spectroscopy. The assignment of NMR signals was performed by means of 1H-1H COSY, NOESY, ROESY, TOCSY, HMQC and HMBC experiments.
