Supernatants of peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL), containing lymphokines, isolated from MS patients and healthy subjects were tested for demyelinating activity in organotypic culture of the rat cerebellum. PBL were isolated on Ficoll-paque gradient and cultures in RPMI 1640 medium for 72 h with or without phytohemagglutinin and Concanavalin A. Both stimulated and unstimulated PBL supernatants from MS patients consistently demyelinated cerebellum cultures. The supernatants of unstimulated PBL from healthy subjects did not produce demyelination, however, slight effect was present in the cultures treated with PBL stimulated supernatants. The results indicate that lymphokines might be involved in demyelination in MS.
The percentage of interleukin-2-receptor-positive peripheral blood lymphocytes in MS patients was significantly higher in acute relapse than in remission or in controls. After stimulation by phytohemagglutinin, the expression of interleukin-2 receptor on peripheral blood lymphocytes of MS patients was within the range of healthy controls, implying no general impairment of receptor expression. These results confirm other evidence that there is a small population of activated T lymphocytes in acute relapse of MS.

Spontaneous histamine release (SHR) from leucocytes (basophils) of 27 migraine patients was investigated during various phases of attack. Mean SHR during the first 3 h of attack (33.7%) was increased compared with the mean SHR from leucocytes of healthy persons (15.9%), but differed insignificantly from the mean SHR in symptom-free periods. Histamine release (HR) from leucocytes of healthy persons suspended in migraine sera from different time-periods of attack was also increased compared with HR in control sera, i.e. high HR could be induced by passive transfer of serum. But the mean HRs in sera from different time-periods of attack were insignificantly different from the mean HR in sera from symptom-free periods. The increased SHR may contribute to vascular hyperreactivity in migraine.

The spontaneous histamine release (SHR) from leucocytes in migraine patients during symptom-free periods has been investigated, and also the influence of migraine sufferer serum on histamine release (HR) from blood donor leucocytes. The leucocytes were isolated according to the Day method and histamine assay was made by the Shore spectrofluorometric method modified by Bergendorff and Uväs (1). SHR in the 17 female migraine patients was significantly higher (39.7% +/- 13.1%) than in 8 controls (25.4% +/- 4.2%). Migraine serum increased HR from blood donor leucocytes by 14.6% +/- 20.2% compared with the SHR of these cells.
Using an inquiry method the prevalence of migraine was determined in a group of 711 physicians and their spouses in the City of Lódź. This prevalence was 7.8%-12.2%. This prevalence was twice as high in physicians as in their spouses. The author explains this as an example of differences in the prevalence of migraine in different occupational groups. In 85.9% of the subjects with migraine there was a family history of migrainous headaches which is wet another evidence of familial occurrence of this disease. In the discussion the authors quotes a similar study of Dalsgaarg-Nielsen and Ulrich in Denmark in 1973 and stated that the results of the present study and that of the Danish authors were not significantly different with regard to the prevalence of migraine. Finally the authors stress the economic importance of migraine indicating that in 0.85% of the responders migraine attacks caused temporary disability to work of about 20 days annually.
We present a case of 47-year old patient with a rare form of focal dystonia restricted to laryngeal adductors with blepharospasm. Apart from typical symptoms of blepharospasm, the patient had severe problems with articulation in the form of harsh voice, frequently interrupted speech and the sound coming out with a great effort. We applied a transcutaneous botulin toxin therapy to this patient. The toxin was given into thyroarytenoid muscle in transcutaneous injections under control of EMG. Successful clinical effect was achieved with the dose of 80 U of the botulin toxin (Dysport) and lasted 6 months. The treatment was repeated, and the patient has not presented the symptoms of the disease since then for 10 months. We confirm that the botuline toxin transcutaneous injections represent a save and effective treatment for laryngeal adductor dystonia.
Adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD) is a hereditary disease related to abnormalities in the structure and function of peroxisomes. The nature of disorder arises from defective process of beta-oxidation of very-long-chain fatty acids and their accumulation in various organs. ALD may present as a few phenotypes urologic symptomatology of which depends on proportions of the brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves affection. Below, we present a case (and its family) of a cerebral type of adrenomyeloneuropathy--a rare form of adrenoleukodystrophy, and discuss its clinical manifestation as well as biochemical, hormonal, electrophysiological, neuropsychological and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) diagnostics.

On the ground of an analysis of 64 patients the authors present their opinion on the clinical usefulness of digital subtraction angiography in the diagnosis of cerebrovascular diseases. It is believed that this method provides in most cases information which are not necessary to be confirmed by other methods. Digital angiography has a lower resolution ability than conventional angiography but is less invasive and may be presently a good screening or control technique.

The blood serotonin level was determined by the fluorescent method of Ashcroft in 13 patients with sciatic pains during the pains and after the disappearance. The serotonin level was usually higher at the time of pains. In the discussion the author reminds that serotonin level falls during a migrainous attack and points out that the results of the present study confirm the specificity of sertonin level fall in migraine.
