LaboImage: a workstation environment for research in image processing and analysis.

Numerous images are produced daily in biomedical research. In order to extract relevant and useful results, various processing and analysis steps are mandatory. The present paper describes a new, powerful and user-friendly image analysis system: LaboImage. In addition to standard image processing modules. LaboImage also contains various specialized tools. These multiple processing modules and tools are first introduced. A one-dimensional gel analysis method is then described. The new concept of 'normalized virtual one-dimensional gel' is introduced, making comparisons between gels particularly easy. This normalized gel is obtained by compensating for the bending of the lanes automatically; no information loss is incurred in the process. Finally, the model of interaction in a multi-window environment is discussed. LaboImage is designed to run in two ways: interactively, using menus and panels; and in batch mode by means of user-defined macros. Examples are given to illustrate the potentialities of the software.

[Changes in serum lipid levels and the spectrum of individual fatty acids in patients with chronic renal failure on conservative and hemodialysis treatment and their relation to dietary protein intake].

The serum lipids level, lipoproteins with very low and low density and individual fatty acids were studied in three groups of patients with chronic renal insufficiency (ChRI) on conservative treatment, on hemodialysis to 12 months and over 12 months, looking for a connection with the ChRI stage, with the effect of hemodialysis and diet. A tendency to decrease of the levels of beta-lipoproteins (beta LP) and total cholesterol (TCh) in beta LP was outlined from conservative to hemodialysis ChRI, hyperprebeta--lipoproteinemia, with S-fraction being established more often. That explains the great discrepancies in lipoprotein--profile among the three groups of patients, the dietetic factor, likely to play a decisive role for that. For the same reasons, deficiency of essentail fatty acids--linoleic and arachidonic was esotablished in the patients with conservative ChRI, eliminated in the course of dialysis. Since serum albumins show a substantial correlative relationship with palmiatic, stearic, linoleic, acid, beta LP and TCh in beta LP, those lipid indices could be admitted to follow the protein-caloric deficiency in the patients with ChRI, in the conservative therapeutic stage in particular. Those data necessitate a critical antitude to the strict hypoprotein regimen in them.

[Urea kinetics model of patients on programmed hemodialysis].

Fifty three patients with programmed hemodialysis, in a stable state were studied to the method of urea-kinetic modelling. A high correlation relationship was established between the pre-dialysis values of urea nitrogen in blood and the protein import, calculated from the quantity of the endogenously produced urea nitrogen. The best rehabilitated patients (41,5%) proved to introduce 1,0-1,6 g/kg body weight proteins and maintain a concentration of blood urea nitrogen from 65-95 ng% (32,14-33,8 mmol/1). Furthermore, another three patient groups were formed: with reduced protein introduction, with insufficient clearance and with overnormal protein introduction. The optimal group significantly differ from them, according to the state of nourishment, general rehabilitation, phosphatemia, calcium-phosphorus number and dialysis clearance. Both the stage of anemia and arterial hypertension show only a tendency in similar direction.

[Viral hepatitis associated with prolonged hemodialysis treatment].

Viral hepatitis has a high incidence both among patients on hemodialysis and among the attending personnel. A clinical epidemiological study on hepatitis epidemic was carried out at the department of hemodialysis--Research Institute of Nephrology, Urology, Hemodialysis and Transplantation--for an eight-year period. Twenty two per cent of the patients were affected by hepatitis infection and 27.1 per cent of the personnel. The disease has, more often, a subclinical course in the patients on hemodialysis, manifested not later than one year after the initiation of hemodialysis treatment. The epidemic of viral hepatitis a chain of five epidemic outbreaks with a considerable predomination of HBsAg--positive forms. About 15 per cent of the patients on hemodialysis are chronic carriers of HBsAg, being, very likely, associated with the altered immune reactivity. All those data support the necessity of the introduction of a campaign programme against hepatitis epidemic.

[Tuberculosis in patients treated with chronic dialysis].

Four cases with tuberculosis, not differentiated clinically and one case with ordinary septic process, falsly diagnosed as tuberculosis are described in patients treated with long-term hemodialysis. The errors admitted are analyzed, the significance of the atypical tuberculosis forms being stressed upon, especially miliary tuberculosis, pulmonary uremic edema, resembling disseminated pulmonary tuberculosis as well as of reduced activity in searching and diagnosis of tuberculosis. A plan and indications for the treatment of those infections in patients with kidney diseases are presented, treated with long-term hemodialysis.
