A new advanced surface modification technique--titanium oxide ceramic surface implants: the background and long-term results.

This paper discusses the background of advanced surface modification technologies and presents a new technique that forms a titanium oxide ceramic coating with relatively long-term clinical use. Three general techniques are used to modify surfaces: adding or removing material, or changing material already present. Surface properties can also be changed through laser or electron beam thermal treatment without adding or removing material. The new technique outlined in this paper describes producing a corrosion-resistant, 2000 A to 2500 A thick, coherent crystalline oxide ceramic layer on the surface of titanium implants. The layer is grown electrochemically from the bulk of the metal and modified by heat treatment. Compared with implants covered with other coatings, the improved properties of such oxide ceramic-coated implants include the advantages of higher external hardness and greater adherence between the titanium and the ceramic oxide coating. The virtually perfect insulation between the tissue and the metal prevents metal allergy. The coated implants were subjected to various physical and chemical tests and electron microscopy for a qualitative characterization. Finally, these implants (plates, screws for maxillofacial osteosynthesis, and dental root implants) were followed in surgical practice for 10 years. Tests demonstrated and the acquired experience confirmed the good properties of the titanium oxide ceramic-coated implants.

[Clinical experiences with the analgesic effects of citalopram].

Antidepressive drugs influencing the serotonin metabolism have shown some efficacy in treatment of generalised pain syndrome. The aim of the present study was to observe the analgesic effect of citalopram < 1-[3-(dimetilamino)propil]-1-(p-florofenil)-5-ftal+ ++ánkarbonitin > in 20 non depressive patients with chronic pain syndrome (fibromyalgy and/or radicular pain). On the base of a short time (6 weeks) observation a limited clinical effect was observed, however, the Seropram seems to have some benefits in the treatment of chronic pain.

[Possibilities for improvement of the surface properties of dental implants (2). The use of ceramic oxides in surface coating for titanium and tantalum implants].

A corrosion-resistant, 2000-2500 A thick, ceramic oxide layer with a coherent crystalline structure was produced on the surface of titanium implants. The layer contains a bioactive component, it is made from the material of the implant, adheres well and gives an aesthetically pleasant impression. The coated implants were subjected to various physical, chemical electronmicroscopic, etc. tests for their qualitative characterization. These tests demonstrated the good properties of the implants. The procedure is protected internationally by patents.

[Possibilities of improving surface properties of medical implants 1].

The work is planned in three parts. The first reviews the various modification of the surface-treatment procedures for medical implants. A separate section deals with procedures involving the application of material or the removal of material, and those is which material is not applied or removed. Special consideration is paid to the surface-treatment procedures for facial or mandibular implants, and techniques involving calcium phosphate and hydroxylapatite coatings.
