Fullerene quantum gyroscope.

We report the observation of quantized rotational states of a diatomic C2 unit in solid endohedral fullerene C(2)Sc(2)@C(84). The rotational transitions induce a periodic line pattern in the low energy Raman spectrum. The rotational constant B and the C-C distance were found to be 1.73 cm(-1) and 0.127 nm, respectively. Density functional calculations revealed an intrinsic rotational barrier of the order of only a few meV for the C2 unit. The Schrödinger equation involving the potential barrier was solved and the Raman tensor matrix elements were calculated, yielding good quantitative agreement with the experiment. To our best knowledge this is the first intrinsic rotational spectrum of a diatomic plane molecular rotor.

[Early detection of scleroderma in quartz dust exposed workers and workers with silicosis by determining serum beta-galactosidase activity].

Progressive systemic sclerosis (PSS) is a rare disease belonging to the collagen diseases. PSS is frequently observed in workers with an intensive exposure to crystalline silica and with silicosis in the GDR. The recognition as an occupational disease is regulated by law. The elevated beta-galactosidase activity in the serum of patients with silicosis and beginning PSS can be used for detecting of early stages of PSS. References are given to medical care of patients with silicosis and exposure to quartz.

[Coincidence of lethal B-streptococcal disease of newborn with acute puerperal polyarthritis of mother due to infectious allergy (author's transl)].

Reported in this paper is a lethal B-streptococcal disease of a newborns which grew manifest as meningitis. It had been caused by Type Ic B-streptococci. The same pathogen was isolated from the mother's vaginal secretion. The mother fell sick with acute allergico-infectious polyarthritis, ten days after birth. This coincidence between infection of the newborn and the mother's puerperal disease is discussed.

Pentaheptite modifications of the graphite sheet.

Pentaheptites (three-coordinate tilings of the plane by pentagons and heptagons only) are classified under the chemically motivated restriction that all pentagons occur in isolated pairs and all heptagons have three heptagonal neighbors. They span a continuum between the two lattices exemplified by the boron nets in ThMoB4 (cmm) and YCrB4 (pgg), in analogy with the crossover from cubic-close-packed to hexagonal-close-packed packings in 3D. Symmetries realizable for these pentaheptite layers are three strip groups (periodic in one dimension), p1a1, p112, and p111, and five Fedorov groups (periodic in two dimensions), cmm, pgg, pg, p2, and p1. All can be constructed by simultaneous rotation of the central bonds of pyrene tilings of the graphite sheet. The unique lattice of cmm symmetry corresponds to the previously proposed pentaheptite carbon metal. Analogous pentagon-heptagon tilings on other surfaces including the torus, Klein bottle, and cylinder, face-regular tilings of pentagons and b-gons, and a full characterization of tilings involving isolated pairs and/or triples of pentagons are presented. The Kelvin paradigm of a continuum of structures arising from propagation of two original motifs has many potential applications in 2D and 3D.
